📖 Detailed Notes /
Optics is the branch of physics that studies the behaviour and properties of light. Light is a transverse electromagnetic wave and does not require a medium to travel, which is why sunlight reaches the Earth through the vacuum of space. In vacuum, light travels at approximately 3 × 10⁸ metres per second — the fastest known speed in the universe. Light exhibits rectilinear propagation, meaning it travels in straight lines, a fact demonstrated by the formation of sharp shadows and the working of a pinhole camera.
Reflection of light occurs when light strikes a surface and bounces back. It obeys two laws: (1) the incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane, and (2) the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. A plane mirror produces a virtual, erect, laterally inverted image of the same size as the object, positioned as far behind the mirror as the object is in front. Spherical mirrors are of two types. A concave mirror curves inward and is converging — it is used in shaving mirrors, torches, headlights and solar cookers because it can concentrate light. A convex mirror curves outward and is diverging; it always forms a small, virtual, erect image and gives a wide field of view, which is why it is used as a rear-view mirror in vehicles. The relation connecting object distance (u), image distance (v) and focal length (f) is the mirror formula 1/v + 1/u = 1/f, and magnification m = -v/u.
Refraction of light is the change in direction of light as it passes from one transparent medium into another of different optical density. When light enters a denser medium (say, from air to water or glass), it bends towards the normal; when it enters a rarer medium, it bends away from the normal. The extent of bending is governed by Snell’s law: n₁ sin i = n₂ sin r. The refractive index of a medium (n) equals the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum to the speed of light in that medium; it is always greater than 1 for real media. Everyday effects of refraction include a pencil appearing bent in a glass of water, the apparent shallowness of a swimming pool, the twinkling of stars, and the Sun being visible a few minutes before actual sunrise and after actual sunset. When light travelling in a denser medium strikes the boundary of a rarer medium at an angle greater than the critical angle, it is completely reflected back — this is total internal reflection, the principle behind optical fibre communication, diamonds’ brilliance and the formation of mirages on hot roads.
Lenses are transparent optical devices bounded by two surfaces, at least one of which is curved. A convex (converging) lens is thick at the centre and converges parallel rays to a real focus; it is used as a magnifying glass, in cameras, microscopes and to correct long-sightedness. A concave (diverging) lens is thin at the centre and spreads rays out, forming a virtual focus; it corrects short-sightedness. The power of a lens measures its ability to converge or diverge light and is the reciprocal of the focal length in metres, P = 1/f, measured in dioptres (D). Convex lenses have positive power and concave lenses negative power.
The human eye is a natural optical instrument. Light enters through the cornea, passes through the pupil (whose size is controlled by the iris), and is focused by the eye lens onto the retina, where a real, inverted, diminished image forms. The ciliary muscles change the curvature of the lens to focus on objects at different distances — this power is called accommodation. The nearest point at which the eye can see clearly is the near point (about 25 cm for a normal adult), and the farthest is the far point (infinity). Common defects of vision include myopia or short-sightedness (distant objects blurred, corrected by a concave lens), hypermetropia or long-sightedness (near objects blurred, corrected by a convex lens), presbyopia (age-related loss of accommodation) and astigmatism (uneven curvature, corrected by cylindrical lenses). When white light passes through a glass prism it splits into its seven constituent colours — violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red (VIBGYOR) — because different colours travel at different speeds in glass and bend by different amounts; violet bends the most and red the least. This phenomenon, called dispersion, together with refraction and total internal reflection inside raindrops, produces the rainbow.
