📖 Detailed Notes /

Acids, bases and salts form one of the most frequently tested chapters in TNPSC General Science. Understanding them begins with the concept of ionisation in water. According to the Arrhenius theory, an acid is a substance that releases hydrogen ions (H+) — actually hydronium ions, H3O+ — when dissolved in water, while a base releases hydroxide ions (OH). Bases that are soluble in water are called alkalis, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH).

Acids are classified by their source and strength. Mineral (inorganic) acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3) are usually strong. Organic acids such as acetic acid in vinegar, citric acid in lemon, tartaric acid in tamarind, lactic acid in curd and oxalic acid in tomato are usually weak. The key difference between a strong and a weak acid is the degree of dissociation: a strong acid ionises almost completely in water, giving a high concentration of H+ ions and therefore a very low pH (1 to 3), whereas a weak acid ionises only partially and sets up an equilibrium, giving a higher pH (around 4 to 6). Importantly, strength is different from concentration — a dilute solution of a strong acid can still be more ionised than a concentrated weak acid.

The pH scale, introduced by Sorensen, measures hydrogen ion concentration on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 (pure water) is neutral. Values below 7 indicate acidity and values above 7 indicate basicity; each unit change represents a tenfold change in H+ concentration. Universal indicator and pH paper give the approximate pH by a colour change. pH has enormous practical importance: our digestive system, blood (pH ≈ 7.4), soil fertility, and even the survival of aquatic life all depend on maintaining a suitable pH. Farmers add lime (calcium oxide/hydroxide) to neutralise acidic soils.

Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to give a salt and water: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O. This reaction is always exothermic — heat is released and the temperature of the mixture rises. Neutralisation explains many everyday phenomena: taking an antacid (a mild base such as magnesium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate) to relieve acidity in the stomach, applying baking soda paste to a bee sting (which is acidic), or using calamine (mild base) on a wasp sting.

Salts and their preparations are a favourite exam area. Common salt (NaCl) is the raw material for many chemicals. Baking soda (NaHCO3) is used in cooking, as an antacid and in soda-acid fire extinguishers. Washing soda (Na2CO3·10H2O) is used in cleaning, glass and paper manufacture and for removing the permanent hardness of water. Plaster of Paris (CaSO4·½H2O) is obtained by heating gypsum to about 100°C and is used by doctors to set fractured bones and by sculptors for casts. Bleaching powder (CaOCl2) is manufactured by passing chlorine over dry slaked lime and is used to disinfect drinking water, bleach cotton and paper pulp. Understanding each salt’s chemical name, formula, method of preparation and specific use is the fastest way to score marks on this topic.

(Detailed Notes in Tamil)
