📖 Detailed Notes / விரிவான குறிப்புகள்

Acids, bases and salts is one of the most frequently tested chemistry chapters in TNPSC exams because it links to everyday life and to General Science questions in Group I, II and IV papers.

Defining acids and bases. By Arrhenius theory an acid produces H⁺ ions (as H₃O⁺ in water) and a base produces OH⁻ ions. Brønsted–Lowry theory calls an acid a proton donor and a base a proton acceptor. Lewis theory defines an acid as an electron-pair acceptor and a base as an electron-pair donor.

Properties. Acids taste sour, conduct electricity in solution, turn blue litmus red, and react with active metals to release hydrogen. Bases (soluble ones are alkalis) taste bitter, feel soapy, turn red litmus blue. Acid + base neutralisation gives salt and water. Acids react with carbonates to release CO₂, turning limewater milky.

The pH scale. Introduced by Søren Sørensen in 1909, pH expresses hydrogen-ion concentration on a 0–14 scale. Pure water is neutral at 7; below 7 acidic, above 7 alkaline. Human blood is slightly basic (~7.4). Rainwater below pH 5.6 is acid rain, formed when sulphur and nitrogen oxides dissolve in moisture.

Indicators. Litmus (from lichens) is purple when neutral, red in acid, blue in base. Phenolphthalein is colourless in acid, pink in base; methyl orange is red in acid, yellow in base. Turmeric and red-cabbage juice are natural indicators; onion and vanilla are olfactory indicators.

Important salts. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the parent for many chemicals — electrolysis of brine (chlor-alkali process) yields NaOH, chlorine and hydrogen. Washing soda (Na₂CO₃·10H₂O) softens hard water and serves glass, soap and paper industries. Baking soda (NaHCO₃) is used in cooking, as an antacid, and in soda-acid fire extinguishers; baking powder mixes it with tartaric acid so released CO₂ makes cakes rise. Bleaching powder (CaOCl₂) disinfects water and bleaches fabric. Plaster of Paris (CaSO₄·½H₂O), from heated gypsum, sets hard with water and supports fractured bones.

Everyday links. The stomach secretes HCl for digestion; excess causes acidity, relieved by antacids like milk of magnesia. Tooth decay starts below mouth pH 5.5. Bee stings (acidic) are soothed with baking soda; wasp stings (basic) with vinegar. Such examples are favourite TNPSC one-mark questions.
