Introduction to Sangam Literature

Sangam literature is the oldest surviving body of literature in the Tamil language, composed roughly between 300 BCE and 300 CE. The word “Sangam” means an assembly or academy of poets. Ancient Tamil tradition speaks of Three Sangams (Moodru Sangam) — literary academies held under the patronage of Pandya kings at Madurai. According to tradition, the First Sangam lasted 4,800 years, the Second Sangam lasted 3,700 years, and the Third Sangam lasted 1,850 years. While these numbers are legendary, the literature of the Third Sangam is what survives today as Sangam literature.

Tolkappiyam — The Foundational Grammar

Tolkappiyam is the oldest surviving Tamil grammatical text and is attributed to Tolkappiyar. It is traditionally associated with the Second Sangam. The text has three major sections (Adhikarams): Ezhuttadhikaram (letters/phonology), Solladhikaram (words/morphology), and Poruladhikaram (meaning/semantics and poetics). Tolkappiyam is significant because it codified not just grammar but also the classical conventions of Tamil poetry — including the five landscapes (tinai) used in akam poetry and the various modes of love poetry.

Ettuthokai — The Eight Anthologies

The Ettuthokai (எட்டுத்தொகை) or Eight Anthologies are among the most important collections of Sangam poetry. They contain a total of 2,371 poems composed by over 470 poets — including both men and women — from diverse social backgrounds. The eight anthologies are:

  1. Ainkurunooru (ஐங்குறுநூறு) — 500 short poems on love; compiled by Purikkoh
  2. Narrinai (நற்றிணை) — 400 poems primarily on love themes
  3. Agananooru (அகநானூறு) — 400 poems on akam (love) themes
  4. Purananuru (புறநானூறு) — 400 poems on puram (heroic/war) themes
  5. Kurunthokai (குறுந்தொகை) — 401 short poems on love; contains poems by Kabilar
  6. Kalittokai (கலித்தொகை) — 150 poems in Kali metre; the only anthology in Kali metre
  7. Paripadal (பரிபாடல்) — poems on devotion to Vishnu and Murugan; originally 70 poems but only 22 survive
  8. Padirruppadu (பதிற்றுப்பத்து) — 80 poems praising ten Chera kings (one decade each)

Pattuppattu — The Ten Idylls

The Pattuppattu (பத்துப்பாட்டு) or Ten Idylls are longer narrative poems, more elaborate and descriptive than the anthologies. The ten poems are: Thirumurugarruppadai, Porunarruppadai, Sirupanaruppadai, Perumpanatruppadai, Mullaipattu, Maduraikanchi, Nedunalagadai, Kurinjippattu, Pattinapalai, and Malaipadukadam. These poems were composed as “arruppadai” (guide poems) that directed pilgrims to temples or patrons, describing the beauty of the land along the way.

The Five Great Epics (Aimperumkappiyangal)

While technically post-Sangam, the Five Great Epics are closely tied to Tamil literary tradition:

Akam and Puram Poetry

A unique feature of Sangam poetry is its classification into Akam (interior) and Puram (exterior) themes. Akam poetry deals with love and uses a nature-symbol convention called “tinai” — five landscapes each associated with a phase of love: Kurinji (mountain = union), Mullai (forest = patient waiting), Marutham (farmland = unfaithfulness), Neithal (coastal = longing), Palai (wasteland = separation/elopement). Puram poetry deals with war, valor, death, and the generosity of kings.

Significance for TNPSC

Sangam literature questions appear in almost every TNPSC exam. Key areas tested include: names and authors of the Eight Anthologies; Five Great Epics and their authors; the three Sangams; Tolkappiyam’s sections; Tinai system; and famous Sangam poets like Kabilar, Avvaiyar, and Nakkirar.

Detailed Notes in Tamil
