⚡ Current Electricity & Magnetism — Ohm’s Law, Circuits & Electromagnetic Induction
1. What is Electric Current?
Electric current is the rate at which electric charge flows through a conductor. If a charge Q passes through any cross-section of a wire in time t, then the current is I = Q/t. The SI unit is the ampere, named after Andre-Marie Ampere. Since the SI redefinition that came into force on 20 May 2019, the ampere is no longer defined through the force between two parallel wires; instead it is fixed by assigning the elementary charge e the exact value 1.602176634 x 10-19 coulomb. One ampere therefore corresponds to about 6.24 x 1018 electrons crossing a point every second. A very important examination point is that conventional current is taken from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of a cell, while electrons actually drift in the opposite direction.
2. Potential Difference and Ohm’s Law
Charge does not move on its own; it needs a potential difference, defined as the work done per unit charge, V = W/Q, measured in volt. Georg Simon Ohm established that for a metallic conductor held at a constant temperature, the current is directly proportional to the potential difference across it, giving V = IR. The constant R is the resistance, measured in ohm. Note the crucial condition: Ohm’s Law holds only at constant temperature, and conductors such as semiconductor diodes and filament lamps that do not obey it are called non-ohmic conductors.
Resistance itself depends on the geometry and material of the conductor through R = rho L / A, where L is length, A is area of cross-section and rho is resistivity. Resistivity is a material property. Silver is the best conductor, followed by copper and aluminium, which are the metals actually used for household and transmission wiring because of cost. Alloys such as nichrome and manganin have much higher resistivity and do not oxidise readily at high temperature, which is why heating elements are made from nichrome rather than pure copper.
3. Series and Parallel Circuits
When resistors are joined end to end in series, the same current passes through each of them and the effective resistance is the simple sum, R = R1 + R2 + R3. The equivalent resistance in series is always greater than the largest individual resistance. When resistors are joined across the same two points in parallel, each gets the full potential difference and the reciprocals add, 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3, so the equivalent resistance is always smaller than the smallest individual resistance. Household appliances are wired in parallel so that each device receives the full 230 V and can be switched independently, and so that the failure of one appliance does not break the circuit for the rest.
4. Heating Effect, Power and the Fuse
Whenever current passes through a resistance, electrical energy is converted into heat according to Joule’s law of heating, H = I2Rt. The electric iron, room heater, geyser, toaster and the old incandescent lamp all exploit this effect. Electric power is the rate of consuming energy, P = VI, which can also be written as I2R or V2/R, and is measured in watt. For billing, energy is measured in kilowatt-hour, popularly called a unit; one kilowatt-hour equals 3.6 x 106 joule. The electric fuse is the simplest safety device based on the heating effect: it is a short piece of wire with a low melting point and comparatively high resistance, usually a tin-lead alloy, placed in series with the live wire so that an excessive current melts it and breaks the circuit before the wiring catches fire. A miniature circuit breaker performs the same task electromagnetically and can be reset.
5. Magnetic Effect of Current and Induction
In 1820 Hans Christian Oersted noticed that a compass needle placed near a current-carrying wire deflected, proving that electricity and magnetism are linked. The field around a straight conductor forms concentric circles whose direction follows the right-hand thumb rule. A current-carrying coil wound on a soft iron core becomes an electromagnet, and soft iron is chosen because it loses its magnetism as soon as the current stops. A current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force whose direction is given by Fleming’s left-hand rule, and this is the working principle of the electric motor. Conversely, Michael Faraday showed that moving a conductor in a magnetic field, or changing the flux linked with a coil, induces an emf; the direction of the induced current is given by Fleming’s right-hand rule and by Lenz’s law, which states that the induced current always opposes the change producing it and is therefore a direct consequence of the conservation of energy. The electric generator and the transformer are the two great applications. A transformer changes voltage by mutual induction between a primary and a secondary coil and, because it needs a continuously changing flux, it works only on alternating current.
