2
Babur used the Tulughma (flanking) tactic and Ottoman-style field artillery handled by Ustad Ali Quli and Mustafa Rumi. His autobiography, the Tuzuk-i-Baburi (Baburnama), was written in Chagatai Turkish.
3
Babur’s later victories: Khanwa (1527) against Rana Sanga of Mewar, Chanderi (1528) against Medini Rai, and Ghaghra (1529) against the Afghans of Bihar and Bengal.
4

5
Akbar (1556-1605) ascended the throne at the age of thirteen. Bairam Khan was his regent until 1560. In the Second Battle of Panipat (5 November 1556) the Mughals defeated Hemu, the general of the Sur dynasty.
6
Akbar’s religious policy rested on Sulh-i-Kul (universal peace). He abolished the pilgrimage tax in 1563 and jizya in 1564, built the Ibadat Khana at Fatehpur Sikri in 1575, issued the Mahzar or infallibility decree in 1579 and proclaimed Din-i-Ilahi in 1582.

The Mansabdari system graded every officer by a dual rank: Zat fixed personal status and salary, while Sawar fixed the number of cavalrymen he had to maintain. Each sawar kept two horses; dagh was the branding of horses and chehra the descriptive muster roll.
8
The Dahsala or Zabti (Bandobast) land revenue settlement was prepared by Raja Todar Mal and proclaimed in 1580. It fixed a cash rate per bigha using the ten-year average (1570-71 to 1579-80) of yields and prices, with the state taking one-third of the produce.
9
Under Zabti, land was classified as Polaj (cultivated every year), Parauti (briefly fallow), Chachar (fallow three to four years) and Banjar (fallow five years or more). Polaj and Parauti were further graded nik, miyana and bad.
10
Other Mughal revenue methods were Ghalla-bakhshi or Batai (crop sharing), Nasaq (assessment from past records) and Kankut (estimate by eye). The karori, qanungo and patwari were the field-level revenue officials.

📖 Detailed Notes (English)

The Mughal Empire is the single most heavily weighted block in the medieval Indian history portion of the TNPSC syllabus. Between the First Battle of Panipat in 1526 and the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, six emperors built a centralised, cash-based imperial state that stretched from Kabul to the Kaveri. Questions are set far more often on the administrative machinery and the exact chronology than on battle narratives, so this lesson is organised around dates, offices and technical terms.

Foundation and consolidation (1526-1556). Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur, a Timurid prince from Farghana who ruled Kabul from 1504, invaded India five times and finally defeated Ibrahim Lodi, the last Lodi sultan, at the First Battle of Panipat on 21 April 1526. His decisive advantages were the Tulughma manoeuvre, which split his force into flanking divisions, and Ottoman-pattern field guns served by Ustad Ali Quli and Mustafa Rumi. He then crushed the Rajput confederacy of Rana Sanga at Khanwa in 1527, took Malwa at Chanderi in 1528 and defeated the eastern Afghans at Ghaghra in 1529. Babur died in 1530 leaving the Baburnama, a memoir in Chagatai Turkish that is a primary source for the period. His son Humayun was pushed out of India by the Afghan Sher Shah Suri, losing at Chausa in 1539 and at Kannauj in 1540. During the fifteen-year Sur interregnum Sher Shah reorganised the land revenue on a measured basis, rebuilt the Grand Trunk Road and issued the silver rupiya and copper dam that the Mughals later retained. Humayun returned, won Sirhind in 1555, and died the next year.

Akbar and the imperial system (1556-1605). Akbar was crowned at Kalanaur at thirteen, with Bairam Khan as regent until 1560. The Second Battle of Panipat on 5 November 1556 destroyed the army of Hemu and secured Delhi. Akbar then moved from conquest to institution building. Rajput houses were brought in by marriage and service rather than only by war, Mewar under Maharana Pratap being the great exception, resisting at Haldighati on 18 June 1576 against Akbar’s general Raja Man Singh. Gujarat fell in 1572, Bengal in 1576 and Kashmir in 1586.

The two pillars of Akbar’s state were the Mansabdari and the Zabti. Every officer held a mansab expressed as two numbers: the Zat, which fixed his personal rank, precedence and pay, and the Sawar, which fixed the cavalry contingent he had to maintain. A mansabdar whose sawar rank equalled his zat stood in the first class, half or more in the second, and less than half in the third. Horses were branded (dagh) and troopers entered on a descriptive roll (chehra) to stop officers from drawing pay for men who did not exist. Mansabs were neither hereditary nor attached to land; most holders were paid by jagir assignments of revenue, and the jagir was transferable at the emperor’s will, which is precisely why the system kept the nobility dependent on the throne.

On the revenue side, Raja Todar Mal completed the Dahsala or Zabti settlement, proclaimed in 1580. Officials averaged yields and prices over the ten years from 1570-71 to 1579-80, applied the state share of one third, and converted it into a fixed cash rate per bigha recorded in the dastur-ul-amal schedule for each revenue circle. Land was graded Polaj, Parauti, Chachar and Banjar by how continuously it was cultivated, and the first two were further ranked nik, miyana and bad. Where measurement was impractical the state used Ghalla-bakhshi or Batai (crop division), Nasaq (assessment from earlier records) and Kankut (estimation). Akbar’s religious settlement followed the same centralising logic: the pilgrimage tax went in 1563, jizya in 1564, the Ibadat Khana was opened for inter-faith debate at Fatehpur Sikri in 1575, the Mahzar of 1579 made the emperor the final arbiter in religious disputes, and Din-i-Ilahi was proclaimed in 1582 on the doctrine of Sulh-i-Kul, universal peace.

Zenith and decline (1605-1707). Jahangir continued his father’s framework, married Nur Jahan in 1611 and received Sir Thomas Roe in 1615, the embassy that won the English their Surat trading privileges. Painting, not building, was his age’s achievement. Under Shah Jahan the empire’s architecture peaked in white marble: the Taj Mahal was built between 1632 and 1653 by Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, along with the Red Fort and Jama Masjid at Delhi and the Peacock Throne. Aurangzeb, who took the title Alamgir after defeating Dara Shikoh at Samugarh in 1658, reversed the religious settlement by reimposing jizya in 1679, and spent his last twenty-six years in the Deccan, annexing Bijapur in 1686 and Golconda in 1687 but failing to subdue the Marathas. The treasury was drained, the jagir pool was over-assigned, and the jagirdari crisis set in. After Aurangzeb’s death in 1707 the empire fragmented; the last emperor, Bahadur Shah II, was deposed after 1857 and exiled to Rangoon in 1858.
