In a special bulletin issued at 1 p.m. on 24 October 2026, the India Meteorological Department said the well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central and south-east Bay of Bengal had concentrated into a depression. The department forecast that it would deepen into a deep depression on 25 October and intensify into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by 26 October, approaching the Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of 28 October, and it issued a pre-cyclone watch for the Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts. For Tamil Nadu the bulletin warned of extremely heavy rain at isolated places in the Nilgiris on 24 October and in Theni, Dindigul and Madurai on 25 October, with heavy to very heavy rain across the delta and northern districts.

Centre announces 11 crore Farmer IDs created, five months ahead of target

On 24 October 2026 Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that 11 crore Farmer IDs had been created, five months ahead of the target date of 31 March 2027 set by the Prime Minister. The milestone was crossed on the night of 23 October 2026. The Farmer ID is a unique digital identity issued to a farmer under the Digital Agriculture Mission, which the Union Cabinet approved on 2 September 2024. It links a farmer's land records to the delivery of schemes, crop loans, insurance and procurement, and the government said more than 6 crore farmers have already received benefits through Farmer-ID-based delivery.

On 24 October 2026 it was reported that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has begun a first-of-its-kind pilot initiative to raise a civil defence volunteer network of about 60,000 people across 12 states and Union Territories, with the Indian Army training the volunteers. The programme is being run by the Directorate General of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards. In its first phase, 50 master trainers from each of the 12 states and Union Territories, 600 in all, undergo a three-day course at Army establishments, to be completed by the second week of November 2026. Tamil Nadu is one of the 12 participating states, and the initiative was presented as a follow-up to the Prime Minister's Independence Day address.

The second phase of Setting to Work of the indigenous Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) System Energy Module was inaugurated on 24 October 2026 at Larsen and Toubro's A.M. Naik Heavy Engineering Complex at Hazira in Gujarat. The module has been developed by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation. An AIP system allows a conventional diesel-electric submarine to stay submerged far longer by reducing its dependence on atmospheric oxygen to recharge batteries. After testing under Indian Navy procedures, the module is to be handed over to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in early 2027 for integration into a Kalvari-class submarine. DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh attended the event virtually.

It was organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs with the Institute of Urban Transport (India) and the Government of Odisha on the theme Urban Accessibility and Liveability in Digital Age, and drew about 1,500 delegates. Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal presented the Urban Mobility Awards and set out a three-I approach of integration, inclusiveness and intelligence. Greater Chennai Corporation was named the city with the best non-motorised transport system, and Chennai Metro Rail Limited shared the award for the best metro passenger services and satisfaction with the National Capital Region Transport Corporation.

Bihar Integrated Manufacturing City Gaya Limited was formally launched at Bodh Gaya on 24 October 2026 by Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who also unveiled the company's logo, website and integrated land-allotment portal and released the curtain-raiser for Bihar Business Connect 2027. Twelve memoranda of understanding covering about 300 acres were signed, proposing investment of about Rs 4,200 crore and 16,095 jobs in food processing, auto components and pharmaceuticals. The project is a 1,670-acre industrial city at Dobhi block in Gaya district, developed as a fifty-fifty joint venture between the Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority and the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust, under the Amritsar to Kolkata Industrial Corridor.

Official tributes were paid across Tamil Nadu on 24 October 2026, the 225th anniversary of the hanging of the Marudhu Pandiyar brothers by the British at Thiruppathur in Sivaganga district on 24 October 1801. Periya Marudhu, also known as Vellai Marudhu, and his younger brother Chinna Marudhu were commanders and rulers of the Sivaganga kingdom who had served under Rani Velu Nachiyar. Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar garlanded the statue at Thiruppathur, and Minister Rajmohan laid a floral tribute on behalf of the state government at the statue and portrait in the Gandhi Mandapam complex at Guindy in Chennai. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay paid tribute recalling the Jambu Island Proclamation.

The order covers 2,37,133 bicycles for boys and 2,95,255 for girls. The rates quoted, inclusive of taxes, are Rs 7,235 for a boys' bicycle and Rs 7,476 for a girls' bicycle, which takes the total to roughly Rs 392 crore against a budget allocation of about Rs 277 crore, leaving a shortfall of some Rs 115 crore that an additional allocation is expected to cover after the work order is placed. The scheme is implemented by the Directorate of Backward Classes Welfare.

On 24 October 2026 Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and for Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated the Integrated Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Toxicity Analysis Laboratory, known as AATAL, at the Delhi branch of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. Set up under Mission Mausam and described by the government as the world's first integrated facility of its kind, AATAL goes beyond the air quality index by identifying pollution sources in real time together with the composition of particulate matter, including metals and toxic elements, and their effects on health. It is integrated with the institute's AIRWISE system, which issues 72-hour forecasts at a resolution of 400 metres.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police observed its 65th Raising Day on 24 October 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah greeted the force's personnel, who are known as Himveers or Himalayan warriors, praising their valour and their service on the high-altitude frontier. The ITBP was raised on 24 October 1962 in the aftermath of the India-China war and is a Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, with headquarters in New Delhi. The force counts 1962 as its first year, which is why 2026 is reckoned as the 65th Raising Day.
