🎯 Key Points |
1Newton stated the Universal Law of Gravitation in his Principia Mathematica (1687): every particle of matter attracts every other particle with a force F = G m1m2 / r2.
2The gravitational constant G = 6.674 × 10−11 N m2 kg−2. Its dimensional formula is M−1L3T−2 and it is the same everywhere in the universe.
3Henry Cavendish (1798) first measured G in the laboratory using a torsion balance — an experiment also called “weighing the Earth”.
4Acceleration due to gravity g = GM/R2, average 9.8 m s−2. The value of g is independent of the mass of the falling body — a feather and a stone fall together in vacuum.
5g is maximum at the poles (9.832 m s−2) and minimum at the equator (9.780 m s−2), because the Earth is an oblate spheroid and because of its rotation.
6g decreases with altitude, gh = g(1 − 2h/R), and also decreases with depth, gd = g(1 − d/R). At the centre of the Earth g = 0.
7Mass is a scalar measured in kilogram and never changes with place; weight (W = mg) is a vector measured in newton and changes with place. Weight at the Earth’s centre is zero.
8Escape velocity ve = √(2gR) = √(2GM/R) = 11.2 km s−1 for the Earth. It is independent of the mass, shape and direction of projection of the body.
9Escape velocities: Moon 2.38, Mars 5.03, Earth 11.2, Jupiter 59.5 km s−1. The Moon has no atmosphere mainly because its escape velocity is very low.
10Orbital velocity vo = √(GM/(R+h)); close to the Earth’s surface it is 7.9 km s−1 (first cosmic velocity). The relation is ve = √2 × vo.
11Kepler’s First Law (Law of Orbits): every planet moves in an ellipse with the Sun at one focus.
12Kepler’s Second Law (Law of Areas): the radius vector sweeps equal areas in equal times — a direct consequence of the conservation of angular momentum. So a planet is fastest at perihelion, slowest at aphelion.
13Kepler’s Third Law (Law of Periods): T2 ∝ a3, where a is the semi-major axis. Newton derived the inverse-square law from this.
14A geostationary satellite orbits 35,786 km above the equator with a period of 24 hours, moving west to east — used by INSAT and GSAT. Polar sun-synchronous satellites orbit at 700–900 km for remote sensing (Cartosat, Oceansat, RISAT).
15Astronauts in a satellite feel weightlessness because they are in free fall, not because gravity is absent. The total energy of a bound satellite is negative, and gravitational potential energy U = −GMm/r.
📖 Detailed Notes (English)

Gravitation is the weakest of the four fundamental forces of nature, yet it is the force that shapes the universe on the largest scale — holding planets in orbit, binding galaxies together and deciding whether a world keeps its atmosphere. Isaac Newton’s great insight, published in the Principia Mathematica in 1687, was that the force pulling an apple to the ground and the force keeping the Moon in its orbit are one and the same force. This single idea united terrestrial and celestial mechanics and gave physics its first universal law.

The Universal Law of Gravitation states that every particle of matter in the universe attracts every other particle with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres: F = G m1m2 / r2. Four properties of this force are regularly tested. It is a central force, acting along the line joining the two centres. It obeys Newton’s third law, so the Earth pulls an apple exactly as hard as the apple pulls the Earth. It is always attractive, never repulsive. And it is independent of the intervening medium, which is why no material can ever act as a “gravity shield”.

Candidates must keep G and g clearly apart. G is the universal gravitational constant, 6.674 × 10−11 N m2 kg−2, with dimensional formula M−1L3T−2; its value is identical on Earth, on Mars and in deep space. It was first measured in the laboratory by Henry Cavendish in 1798 using a delicate torsion balance, an experiment popularly described as “weighing the Earth”. g, by contrast, is the acceleration due to gravity, g = GM/R2, whose value depends on the planet and even on the spot where you stand. On Earth it averages 9.8 m s−2. Crucially, g does not depend on the mass of the falling object, which is why a feather and a coin reach the floor together inside a vacuum chamber.

The variation of g is a favourite source of questions. With latitude, g is greatest at the poles (about 9.832 m s−2) and least at the equator (about 9.780 m s−2). Two causes combine: the Earth is an oblate spheroid whose equatorial radius is roughly 21 km larger than its polar radius, and the Earth’s rotation produces a centrifugal effect that is maximum at the equator and zero at the poles, expressed as g′ = g − Rω2cos2λ. With altitude, gh = g(1 − 2h/R) for small heights. With depth, gd = g(1 − d/R), so g falls steadily to zero at the centre of the Earth. A useful conceptual point: if the Earth suddenly stopped rotating, g at the equator would increase; if instead it spun about seventeen times faster, bodies at the equator would float away.

Mass and weight must never be confused. Mass is a scalar, measured in kilogram, and is the same on the Earth, on the Moon and in a spacecraft. Weight is a vector, W = mg, measured in newton, and changes with location — roughly one-sixth on the Moon and exactly zero at the Earth’s centre. The weightlessness felt by astronauts in orbit is not caused by the absence of gravity: the satellite and everything inside it are in continuous free fall around the Earth, so there is no supporting reaction and the apparent weight is zero. This is one of the most common traps in objective papers.

Escape velocity is the minimum speed with which a body must be projected so that it never returns. Equating the kinetic energy given to the magnitude of the gravitational potential energy, ½mv2 = GMm/R, gives ve = √(2GM/R) = √(2gR) ≈ 11.2 km s−1 for the Earth. Note carefully that it is independent of the mass, the shape and the direction of projection. Comparative values worth memorising are Moon 2.38, Mars 5.03, Earth 11.2 and Jupiter 59.5 km s−1. The Moon’s very low escape velocity explains why it has effectively no atmosphere — gas molecules simply outrun its gravity. Extending the same idea, a black hole is an object so compact that its escape velocity exceeds the speed of light.

For satellites, the orbital velocity is vo = √(GM/(R+h)), which works out to about 7.9 km s−1 just above the Earth’s surface — the so-called first cosmic velocity — and the two speeds are linked by ve = √2 vo. The orbital period is T = 2π√((R+h)3/GM). A geostationary satellite is placed 35,786 km above the equator in a circular orbit, revolving west to east with a period of 24 hours so that it appears fixed in the sky; this is why a dish antenna needs no tracking motor. India’s INSAT and GSAT series occupy this orbit for communication, broadcasting and weather watch, while polar sun-synchronous satellites at 700–900 km, such as Cartosat, Resourcesat and Oceansat, are used for remote sensing. A satellite in a stable orbit needs no fuel to stay there, because gravity supplies exactly the centripetal force required.

Finally, Kepler’s three laws describe planetary motion and connect beautifully to Newton’s law. The law of orbits says each planet traces an ellipse with the Sun at one focus. The law of areas says the radius vector sweeps equal areas in equal intervals, which is simply the conservation of angular momentum, and which explains why a planet is fastest at perihelion and slowest at aphelion. The law of periods states T2 ∝ a3, and it was from this relation that Newton deduced the inverse-square dependence. Remember also that gravitational potential energy is negative, U = −GMm/r, and that the total energy of any bound satellite is therefore negative — a positive total energy would mean the body has escaped. For TNPSC Group 1, 2, 2A, 4 and VAO, concentrate on the numerical values, the clear G-versus-g distinction, the geostationary figures and the conceptual traps around weightlessness and the independence of escape velocity from mass.

✅ Answer Key & Explanations |
Q1 → B) The equator
At the equator the radius of the Earth is largest and the centrifugal effect of rotation is maximum, so g is minimum (9.780 m s−2).
Q2 → C) Its escape velocity
Escape velocity ve = √(2GM/R) depends only on the mass and radius of the planet, not on the projected body.
Q3 → B) Angular momentum
Gravity is a central force, so the torque about the Sun is zero and the angular momentum of the planet stays constant — which is exactly the law of equal areas.
Q4 → D) It is mainly used for remote sensing and mapping
Remote sensing and mapping need the low polar sun-synchronous orbit (700–900 km). Geostationary satellites are used for communication, television and weather monitoring.
Q5 → B) √2 v
vo = √(gR) and ve = √(2gR), hence ve = √2 vo ≈ 1.414 × 7.9 ≈ 11.2 km s−1.
vo = √(gR), ve = √(2gR); எனவே ve = √2 vo ≈ 1.414 × 7.9 ≈ 11.2 km s−1.
💡 Memory Tips |
💡 “G is Global, g is Geographic.” The capital letter G never changes anywhere in the universe; the small letter g changes from place to place.
💡 “POLE is FULL, EQUATOR is EMPTY.” g is fullest (maximum) at the poles and least at the equator — so you weigh slightly more at the pole.
💡 “Moon 2, Mars 5, Earth 11, Jupiter 59” — recite the escape velocities as a rising count: 2–5–11–59 km/s. Bigger planet, bigger number.
💡 “O–A–P” for Kepler: Orbits (ellipse) → Areas (equal areas) → Periods (T2 ∝ a3), in that order for laws 1, 2 and 3.
💡 “35,786 – think 36 thousand for 24 hours.” Round the geostationary height to about 36,000 km and pair it with the 24-hour period.
