Mechanical Properties of Fluids |
Pressure is the force acting perpendicularly on unit area: P = F/A. Its SI unit is the pascal (Pa), where 1 Pa = 1 N/m².
Pressure inside a liquid at depth h is P = hρg. It grows with depth and density but is entirely independent of the area or shape of the vessel.
Standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is 1 atm = 1.013 × 10⁵ Pa = 760 mm of mercury ≈ 1.013 bar. Torricelli built the first mercury barometer in 1643.
Archimedes’ principle: a body wholly or partly immersed in a fluid experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces.
Law of floatation: a floating body displaces a weight of fluid exactly equal to its own weight. A body floats if its density is less than the density of the fluid.
Ice has a density of about 917 kg/m³ against water’s 1000 kg/m³, so nearly nine-tenths of an iceberg stays submerged and only one-tenth rises above the surface.
Pascal’s law: pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished and equally in all directions. The hydraulic press, hydraulic brakes, hydraulic lift and the dentist’s chair all run on it.
Bernoulli’s principle: for the steady flow of an ideal fluid, P + ½ρv² + ρgh = constant. Wherever the speed is high, the pressure is low.
Bernoulli explains the aerofoil lift of an aircraft wing, the venturi meter, the carburettor and atomiser, and the Magnus effect that makes a spinning cricket ball swing.
Surface tension is the force per unit length acting along a liquid surface; its SI unit is N/m. It makes raindrops spherical and lets a steel needle rest on water.
Surface tension falls when temperature rises and when soap or detergent is added — that is precisely how detergents lift dirt. It rises when salt is dissolved in water.
Capillarity makes kerosene climb a lamp wick, ink spread on blotting paper, and water rise through soil to reach plant roots. Mercury, which does not wet glass, is depressed in a capillary tube.
Viscosity is the internal friction between the layers of a flowing fluid. The coefficient η has the SI unit pascal-second (Pa·s); water measures about 1.0 × 10⁻³ Pa·s at 20 °C.
On heating, liquids become less viscous but gases become more viscous — a favourite one-mark trap. Stokes’ law gives viscous drag as F = 6πηrv, which is why a body settles at a constant terminal velocity.
Relative density (specific gravity) is the ratio of a substance’s density to that of water and has no unit. The hydrometer measures it; the lactometer uses it to test milk, and the Plimsoll line on a ship marks the safe loading limit.
A fluid is any substance that flows and cannot sustain a shearing force at rest — this includes both liquids and gases. Because a fluid has no fixed shape, the useful quantity in describing it is not force but pressure, the force spread over unit area. A sharp knife, a sewing needle and the pointed heel of a shoe all exert enormous pressure from a modest force simply because the contact area is tiny; a camel’s broad foot and a tractor’s wide tyre do the opposite, spreading weight so that the pressure on soft sand or wet soil stays low. This single relationship, P = F/A, is the reason the same question about knives, nails, snowshoes and foundations appears in paper after paper.
Pressure in a Liquid Column
A liquid at rest presses on the walls and base of its container because of its own weight. At a depth h below the free surface, the gauge pressure is P = hρg, where ρ is the density of the liquid and g the acceleration due to gravity. Three consequences matter for the exam. First, pressure depends only on the vertical depth, never on the quantity of liquid or the shape of the vessel — a narrow tube and a wide tank filled to the same level press equally on the base, a result known as the hydrostatic paradox. Second, all points at the same horizontal level in a connected liquid are at equal pressure, which is why water reaches the upper floors of a building from an overhead tank and why a dam must be built much thicker at the bottom than at the top. Third, the total pressure at a depth is the atmospheric pressure plus hρg, so divers feel roughly one extra atmosphere for every ten metres of sea water.
Atmosphere and the Barometer
The column of air above us presses with a standard atmospheric pressure of 1.013 × 10⁵ Pa, which balances a mercury column 760 mm high. Evangelista Torricelli demonstrated this in 1643 with an inverted mercury tube, and the empty space he left at the top is still called the Torricellian vacuum. Mercury is used rather than water because its density, about 13 600 kg/m³, keeps the instrument a convenient length; a water barometer would need a tube over ten metres tall. Pressure falls with altitude, which is why cooking takes longer on a hill station, why aircraft cabins are pressurised, and why a sudden drop in the barometer reading warns of an approaching storm.
Archimedes, Floatation and Pascal
When a body is immersed, the pressure on its lower surface exceeds that on its upper surface, and the difference appears as an upthrust or buoyant force. Archimedes’ principle states that this upthrust equals the weight of the fluid displaced. If the upthrust exceeds the weight the body rises and floats; if it is less the body sinks; if the two are equal the body stays in equilibrium wherever it is placed. A floating body therefore displaces its own weight of fluid — the law of floatation — which is how a steel ship weighing thousands of tonnes stays afloat: its hollow hull displaces far more water than the steel itself would. The same idea explains why an iceberg shows only about a tenth of itself, why a ship rides lower in fresh water than in denser sea water, and why swimming is easier in the salty Dead Sea.
Pascal’s law deals with pressure applied from outside rather than pressure due to weight. In an enclosed fluid, an applied pressure is transmitted equally and without loss to every point. Because the pressure is the same everywhere, a small force on a small piston produces a large force on a large piston in the ratio of their areas — the principle of the hydraulic press, hydraulic brake, hydraulic lift, hydraulic crane and the dentist’s chair. Liquids are chosen for these systems because they are practically incompressible, unlike gases.
Flowing Fluids: Bernoulli, Surface Tension and Viscosity
For a fluid in streamline flow, Bernoulli’s principle states that P + ½ρv² + ρgh stays constant along a streamline — essentially the conservation of energy per unit volume. The practical reading is simple: where the fluid moves faster, its pressure is lower. Air travels faster over the curved upper surface of an aerofoil than under it, so the pressure above is lower and the wing is pushed up. The same effect lifts the roof of a hut in a cyclone, draws liquid up a venturi meter or an atomiser, swings a spinning cricket ball through the Magnus effect, and pulls two ships sailing close together towards each other.
Surface tension arises because a molecule at the surface is pulled inward by its neighbours with no balancing pull from above, so the surface behaves like a stretched elastic skin and shrinks to the smallest possible area. That is why free raindrops and soap bubbles are spherical, why a needle or an insect can rest on water, and why a hot soup looks oddly flat — heating lowers surface tension. Detergents work by lowering the surface tension of water so it can wet and penetrate greasy cloth. The related effect of capillarity raises kerosene in a lamp wick, ink in blotting paper and water in soil, while mercury is depressed in a glass capillary because it does not wet glass. Finally, viscosity is the internal friction that resists relative motion between fluid layers; honey is far more viscous than water. Stokes’ law, F = 6πηrv, shows why a raindrop or a pebble in oil soon reaches a steady terminal velocity, and the Reynolds number Re = ρvD/η decides whether flow is smooth and laminar or chaotic and turbulent.

1. Three laws, three verbs: Pascal PUSHES equally in every direction, Archimedes LIFTS whatever you displace, Bernoulli SPEEDS and the pressure falls.
2. "Fast means Faint" — wherever a fluid is fast, its pressure is faint. Both start with F, so Bernoulli questions on wings, roofs and cricket balls answer themselves.
3. Ice: "One up, nine down" — 1/10 of an iceberg above water, 9/10 below, because 917 is about nine-tenths of 1000.
4. "Liquids Loosen, Gases Grip" — on heating, liquid viscosity falls (honey loosens) while gas viscosity rises.
5. "Soap Spoils the Skin" — soap spoils the surface skin of water, i.e. it lowers surface tension. Salt does the opposite and raises it.
