🔊 Sound Waves & Acoustics |

🎯 Key Points |
1
Sound is a mechanical, longitudinal wave. It needs a material medium and cannot travel through vacuum.
2
Audible range of the human ear is 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Below 20 Hz = infrasonic; above 20,000 Hz = ultrasonic.
3
Speed of sound in dry air at 0°C is about 331 m/s and at 20°C about 343 m/s. It rises roughly 0.61 m/s for every 1°C rise in temperature.
4
Sound travels fastest in solids, slower in liquids and slowest in gases — steel about 5,960 m/s, water about 1,480 m/s, air about 343 m/s.
5
Wave equation: v = f × λ (speed = frequency × wavelength). Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz).
6
Loudness depends on amplitude; pitch (shrillness) depends on frequency; quality or timbre depends on the waveform.
7
Sound level is measured in decibel (dB) on a logarithmic scale. 0 dB is the threshold of hearing; long exposure above 85 dB damages hearing; about 120 dB is the threshold of pain.
8
Echo is the reflection of sound. Because the persistence of hearing is about 0.1 second, the reflecting surface must be at least about 17.2 m away (at 344 m/s) to hear a distinct echo.
9
Reverberation is the persistence of sound in a hall due to repeated reflections. Sabine’s formula: T = 0.161 V / A, where V is volume and A is total absorption.
சபைன் சூத்திரம்: T = 0.161 V / A. இங்கு V கன அளவு, A மொத்த உறிஞ்சுதிறன்.
10
SONAR = Sound Navigation And Ranging. It works on the principle of echo using ultrasonic waves. Depth d = (v × t) / 2.
சோனார் (SONAR) = Sound Navigation And Ranging.
11
Ultrasound is used in medical scanning, echocardiography, cleaning delicate parts, ultrasonic welding and detecting flaws in metal castings.
12
Bats, dolphins and whales navigate by echolocation, sending out ultrasonic pulses and listening to the returning echoes.
13
Doppler effect: apparent change in frequency when the source or the observer moves. Used in radar speed guns, Doppler ultrasound and in astronomy (red shift / blue shift).
14
Mach number = speed of source / speed of sound. Above Mach 1 the body is supersonic and produces a shock wave heard as a sonic boom.
15
Resonance occurs when a body is forced to vibrate at its natural frequency. This is why marching soldiers break step while crossing a bridge.
📖 Detailed Notes — English

1. What Sound Really Is

Sound is a form of energy that travels as a mechanical wave. When an object vibrates, it pushes the particles of the surrounding medium together and then pulls them apart, creating alternate regions of compression (high pressure) and rarefaction (low pressure). Because the particles vibrate along the same direction in which the wave advances, sound is classified as a longitudinal wave. This is the single most-tested fact in this unit.

Since sound needs particles to pass energy from one layer to the next, it cannot travel through a vacuum. The classic bell-jar experiment proves this: an electric bell ringing inside a jar becomes inaudible as the air is pumped out, although the hammer can still be seen striking. Light, being an electromagnetic wave, continues to reach the eye — a favourite comparison question in TNPSC General Science.

2. Characteristics of Sound

Three properties describe every musical sound. Loudness is the sensation produced by the amplitude of the wave; a bigger amplitude carries more energy and sounds louder. Pitch or shrillness is decided by frequency — a woman’s voice or a mosquito’s buzz has a higher frequency than a man’s voice or a lion’s roar. Quality (timbre) arises from the waveform and the pattern of overtones, and it is the reason a violin and a flute playing the same note still sound different.

Frequency, wavelength and speed are tied together by v = f λ. When sound passes from air into water its frequency stays the same, but its speed and wavelength both increase — another frequently asked conceptual point.

3. Speed of Sound in Different Media

Sound travels fastest where the particles are packed most closely and the medium is most elastic. Hence the order is solids > liquids > gases. In steel the speed is roughly 5,960 m/s, in fresh water about 1,480 m/s and in air at 20°C about 343 m/s. In air the speed depends on temperature and humidity but not on pressure, because a change in pressure changes density proportionally and the two effects cancel. As a working rule the speed increases by about 0.61 m/s for each degree Celsius rise. Moist air carries sound slightly faster than dry air because water vapour is lighter than the nitrogen and oxygen it displaces.

4. Echo, Reverberation and Acoustics of Buildings

An echo is a reflected sound heard separately from the original. The ear retains a sound sensation for about 0.1 second, so the reflected sound must arrive later than this to be distinguished. Taking the speed as 344 m/s, the sound must cover at least 34.4 m in going and returning, which means the obstacle must be at least about 17.2 m away. Multiple reflections in a closed hall cause reverberation. Too much reverberation blurs speech; too little makes a hall sound dead. Sabine’s formula, T = 0.161 V / A, links reverberation time to the volume of the hall and the total absorption of its surfaces. Auditoriums are treated with carpets, curtains, perforated boards and upholstered seats to bring the reverberation time to an optimum value.

5. Ultrasonics and SONAR

Waves above 20,000 Hz are ultrasonic. Their short wavelength lets them travel in well-defined beams and reflect from small objects, which makes them ideal for detection. SONAR (Sound Navigation And Ranging) sends an ultrasonic pulse from a transmitter, receives the echo from the sea bed or from a submarine, and computes distance as d = v t / 2, where t is the total to-and-fro time. The same principle guides fishing fleets and maps the ocean floor. In medicine ultrasound produces images of the foetus and the heart, breaks kidney stones by lithotripsy, and cleans instruments. Industry uses it to detect cracks in castings and to weld plastics. Bats and dolphins have practised echolocation for millions of years.

6. Doppler Effect, Sonic Boom and Noise

When a source and an observer move relative to one another, the observed frequency changes — the Doppler effect. An approaching train whistle sounds shriller and drops in pitch as it passes. Traffic radar guns, Doppler ultrasound for blood flow, weather radar and the red shift of distant galaxies all rest on this idea. When a body moves faster than sound, the wavefronts pile up into a cone-shaped shock wave and a sonic boom is heard; the ratio of the body’s speed to the speed of sound is the Mach number. Finally, unwanted sound is noise pollution. Levels beyond 85 dB over long periods cause hearing loss, hypertension and sleep disturbance, and the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 prescribe permissible limits for industrial, commercial, residential and silence zones in India.

💡 Memory Tips |

1. “SoLiGa” — Solid > Liquid > Gas. Speed of sound falls in that order.

2. “20 to 20K, that is the ear’s pay.” Audible range 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz — below is infra, above is ultra.

3. SONAR = “Sound Navigation And Ranging”. Remember it uses ultrasound, not radio waves; RADAR uses radio waves.

4. “AmpLitude = Loudness, FRequency = PitcH.” A-L and F-P pairs never swap.

5. “One–Seven–Two, an echo for you.” 17.2 m is the minimum distance to hear a distinct echo (0.1 s persistence, 344 m/s).
