🔊 Sound & Acoustics | ஒலி மற்றும் ஒலியியல் — TNPSC Physics Notes (12 August 2026)

🎯 Key Points ·
1
Sound is a mechanical longitudinal wave. It needs a material medium and cannot travel through vacuum.
2
Human audible range = 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz).
3
Below 20 Hz = infrasonic; above 20,000 Hz = ultrasonic. Both are inaudible to humans.
4
Speed of sound in air = 331 m/s at 0°C and about 343 m/s at 20–25°C.
5
Speed order: Solids > Liquids > Gases. Air ≈ 343 m/s, Water ≈ 1,480 m/s, Steel ≈ 5,120 m/s.
6
Speed of sound in air increases by about 0.61 m/s for every 1°C rise in temperature.
7
Persistence of hearing = 0.1 second. Hence minimum distance to hear a distinct echo = 17.2 m.
8
Reverberation is the persistence of sound due to repeated reflections inside a closed hall.
9
SONAR = Sound Navigation And Ranging. It works on the principle of echo; depth d = v × t / 2.
SONAR = ஒலி வழிசெலுத்தல் மற்றும் தூர அளவீடு. எதிரொலி கொள்கையில் இயங்கும்; ஆழம் d = v × t / 2.
10
Loudness is measured in decibel (dB) — a logarithmic scale. 0 dB is the threshold of hearing; prolonged exposure above 85 dB damages hearing.
11
Pitch depends on frequency, loudness on amplitude, and quality (timbre) on waveform.
12
Doppler effect: apparent change in frequency when the source and observer move relative to each other.
13
Ultrasound uses: medical scanning, echocardiography, cleaning delicate parts, ultrasonic welding, detecting cracks in metals.
14
Bats and dolphins navigate by echolocation using ultrasonic waves. Dogs can hear up to about 45 kHz.
15
Mach number = speed of object ÷ speed of sound. Objects faster than sound (supersonic) create a sonic boom.
📖 Detailed Notes — English

What is sound? Sound is a form of energy produced by a vibrating body. When an object vibrates, it pushes and pulls the particles of the surrounding medium, creating alternate regions of compression (high pressure) and rarefaction (low pressure). Because the particles vibrate along the same direction in which the wave travels, sound is classified as a longitudinal mechanical wave. This also explains a favourite TNPSC one-liner: sound cannot propagate through a vacuum, which is why astronauts on the Moon must use radio to speak to one another.

Characteristics of a sound wave. Four quantities describe any sound wave. Frequency (f), measured in hertz (Hz), is the number of complete vibrations per second and determines the pitch — a shrill whistle has high frequency, a drum has low frequency. Amplitude is the maximum displacement of a particle from its mean position and determines loudness. Wavelength is the distance between two consecutive compressions. Time period (T) is the reciprocal of frequency. These are linked by the fundamental wave equation v = f × λ. A fifth property, quality or timbre, is decided by the waveform and is why a violin and a flute playing the same note still sound different.

Range of hearing. The human ear responds to frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz, called the audible range. Frequencies below 20 Hz are infrasonic — produced by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and large machinery, and detected by rhinoceroses, whales and elephants. Frequencies above 20 kHz are ultrasonic, used by bats, dolphins and porpoises. It is worth remembering that the upper limit falls with age, which is why older people often lose the ability to hear high-pitched sounds first.

Speed of sound. Sound travels fastest where particles are packed most closely, because energy is handed on more efficiently. Hence the order is solids > liquids > gases. At room temperature the approximate values are 343 m/s in air, about 1,480 m/s in water and roughly 5,120 m/s in steel — a ratio of nearly 1 : 4 : 15. Speed in air depends on temperature and humidity but not on pressure, since density and pressure change together. The standard correction used in exams is that the speed rises by about 0.61 m/s for each 1°C rise in temperature above 331 m/s at 0°C. Sound also travels slightly faster in humid air than in dry air, because water vapour is lighter than air.

Reflection: echo and reverberation. Like light, sound obeys the laws of reflection. A reflected sound heard as a separate repetition is an echo. Because the sensation of sound persists in the brain for about 0.1 second, the reflected sound must arrive at least 0.1 s later to be distinguished. In that time sound covers 343 × 0.1 = 34.4 m, and since the path is to the obstacle and back, the minimum distance to the reflector is 17.2 m. When the reflector is nearer, the reflections merge with the original sound and produce reverberation. Excessive reverberation makes a hall unusable for speech, so auditoriums are lined with curtains, carpets, perforated boards and upholstered seats that absorb sound.

Applications of ultrasound and SONAR. SONAR (Sound Navigation And Ranging) sends an ultrasonic pulse into water and times the returning echo. If the total time is t and the speed of sound in seawater is v, the depth is d = v × t / 2. SONAR is used to measure ocean depth, locate submarines, shipwrecks, icebergs and shoals of fish. The related instrument used specifically for depth sounding is the fathometer. In medicine, ultrasonography images the abdomen and the foetus, while echocardiography maps the heart. Ultrasound also breaks kidney stones (lithotripsy), cleans spiral tubes and jewellery, welds plastics and detects hidden cracks in metal castings — a technique called non-destructive testing.

Doppler effect and supersonic motion. When a source of sound and a listener move relative to each other, the observed frequency changes: the whistle of an approaching train sounds shriller, and drops in pitch as it passes. This is the Doppler effect, discovered by Christian Doppler in 1842, and it underpins radar speed guns, Doppler ultrasound of blood flow, and the astronomical redshift that shows the universe is expanding. The ratio of an object’s speed to the speed of sound is the Mach number; above Mach 1 the object is supersonic and generates a shock wave heard on the ground as a sonic boom.

💡 Memory Tips ·

1. “SLG — Solid, Liquid, Gas” — speed of sound falls in that order. Think of a queue: the tighter the crowd, the faster the message passes.

2. “20 to 20K” — the audible range, 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Below it, INfrasonic is IN-audible; above it, ULTRA is beyond reach.

3. “34.4 halved is 17.2” — sound covers 34.4 m in 0.1 s, but the echo path is a round trip, so the wall is at half that distance.

4. “PLQ = FAW”Pitch↔Frequency, Loudness↔Amplitude, Quality↔Waveform.
“PLQ = FAW” —

5. “Bats, Dolphins, Doctors” — the three famous users of ultrasound: echolocation, navigation and scanning.
