📖 Detailed Notes (English)
Origin and the Vijayanagara link
When Vijayanagara extended its authority over the far south, it governed the conquered Tamil country through military governors called Nayakas. Around 1529, Viswanatha Nayak, son of Nagama Nayak, was placed in charge of the old Pandya land with Madurai as his seat. What began as a governorship hardened into a dynasty that lasted more than two centuries. The turning point was the Vijayanagara collapse after Talikota in 1565: tribute became irregular, then stopped altogether under Thirumalai Nayak, and the Nayakas openly refused to recognise Sriranga III. Three Nayak houses emerged in the Tamil country – Madurai, Thanjavur and Senji (Gingee) – of which Madurai proved the most durable.
The 72 Palayam system
The administrative innovation for which the Madurai Nayaks are best remembered is the palayam system, credited to Viswanatha’s Dalavay and chief minister Ariyanatha Mudaliar. The kingdom was carved into 72 palayams, each entrusted to a palayakkarar (anglicised as polygar). The arrangement was deliberately federal: the palayakkarar enjoyed wide autonomy in policing and justice within his tract, kept roughly a third of the revenue for his own establishment, surrendered about a third as tribute to Madurai and maintained troops with the rest. In return he supplied a fixed quota of soldiers whenever the Nayaka called. The system bought the loyalty of entrenched local chiefs cheaply and gave Madurai a standing army it did not have to pay for directly. Its weakness was the mirror image of its strength – whenever the centre faltered, palayakkarars raided each other and withheld tribute. Significantly, these same 72 palayams became the Polygars whom the English East India Company had to subdue in the Polygar Wars of the late eighteenth century.
Thirumalai Nayak and the Madurai style
The reign of Thirumalai Nayak (1623-1659) is the high-water mark of the dynasty. He reversed his predecessor Muttu Virappa’s shift of the capital to Tiruchirappalli (1616) and restored Madurai as the seat of power by about 1634-35. He repelled Mysore invasions – his general Ramaiyan drove back the attack of about 1625 – and campaigned against the Sethupathi of Ramnad in 1635, the year he also permitted the Portuguese a fortified post. His enduring legacy is architectural. The Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, finished around 1636, is built round a vast courtyard ringed by circular pillars close to 82 feet high; its octagonal throne room, the Swarga Vilasam, carries a ribbed dome some 60 to 70 feet above the floor. Much of the complex was later dismantled and only the dance hall and audience hall survive; Lord Napier, Governor of Madras, carried out a partial restoration between 1866 and 1872. Thirumalai also built the Pudhu Mandapam facing the Meenakshi shrine, added gopurams and mandapas to the Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple, and reorganised the festival calendar – moving the celestial wedding of Meenakshi from Masi to Chithirai and synchronising it with Kallazhagar’s descent to the Vaigai, so that one vast crowd served both festivals. The float festival on the Vandiyur tank is also his.
Mangammal, Meenakshi and the end
After a period of decline, Rani Mangammal governed as regent from 1689 to 1704 for her infant grandson. Her rule is remembered for public works rather than conquest – irrigation channels repaired, roads cut and lined with avenue trees, choultries and temples endowed. Facing Mughal power, she prudently acknowledged Aurangzeb’s suzerainty and supported Zulfiqar Khan at the siege of Jinji. When her grandson came of age in 1704 she refused to surrender authority and was overthrown. The last ruler, Queen Meenakshi, adopted a kinsman and then bought peace by paying Chanda Sahib, agent of the Nawab of Arcot. In 1736 Chanda Sahib turned on her, took Madurai and declared himself master, extinguishing Nayak rule; tradition holds that the queen ended her own life soon after.
