⛏ Mineral Resources of India — Iron Ore, Coal, Bauxite & Mining Belts
A mineral is a naturally occurring substance with a definite chemical composition and physicalproperties. Geographers group India’s minerals into three families — metallic (further divided into ferrousminerals such as iron ore and manganese, and non-ferrous minerals such as bauxite and copper), non-metallic(limestone, mica, gypsum, magnesite) and energy or fuel minerals (coal, lignite, petroleum, natural gas anduranium). India is fortunate in the first and second families and comparatively poor in petroleum, which is why themineral map of the country is so heavily weighted towards the peninsular plateau.
Why the plateau? Almost all of India’s metallic wealth is locked in the ancientArchaean and Dharwar rocks of the Peninsular block. The Northern Plains, built of recent alluvium, are practically barrenof metallic minerals, and the Himalayas — young, folded and still rising — yield only scattered deposits. Thissingle geological fact explains the entire distribution pattern that examiners test again and again.
The four mineral belts. The North-Eastern Plateau Belt covers the Chota Nagpurplateau across Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and adjoining Chhattisgarh. It is rightly called the mineral heartland ofIndia because coal and iron ore lie side by side; that proximity is precisely why the steel towns of Jamshedpur, Bokaroand Rourkela grew where they did. The Central Belt runs through Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and is known forcoal, bauxite, limestone, manganese and diamonds. The South-Western Plateau Belt stretches over Karnataka, Goa,the adjoining Tamil Nadu uplands and Kerala; it is rich in high-grade iron ore, manganese, bauxite and limestone, but ithas virtually no coal — the lignite of Neyveli is the solitary exception. The North-Western Belt, overRajasthan and Gujarat, is a non-ferrous belt: copper, zinc, lead, gypsum, marble and building stone.
Coal. Coal supplies the bulk of India’s commercial energy and the country holdsthe world’s fourth largest reserves. The geological resource is about 4,00,715 million tonnes, of which theGondwana coalfields account for about 3,99,021 million tonnes and the Tertiary coalfields for only about1,695 million tonnes. Gondwana coal, roughly 250 million years old, occupies the Damodar, Mahanadi, Son, Godavari andWardha valleys and includes the Jharia, Raniganj, Bokaro, Talcher, Ib valley and Singrauli fields. Tertiary coal is muchyounger, about 55 million years, with high sulphur content, and is confined to Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, ArunachalPradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Odisha now leads in both reserves (about 1,00,976 million tonnes) and production (about239.40 million tonnes in 2025–26), ahead of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
Iron ore. India possesses about 9,602 million tonnes of recoverable haematite andabout 3,408 million tonnes of recoverable magnetite. Haematite, reddish and containing up to about 70 per cent iron, isthe ore actually used by industry and is concentrated in Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Magnetite, black andmagnetic, has a higher theoretical iron content but is largely reserved; Karnataka alone holds nearly 70 per cent of it inthe Kudremukh belt, the Bababudan hills and the Bellary–Hospet sector. The Bailadila range of Dantewada inChhattisgarh produces the finest ore in the country, exported through Visakhapatnam by way of a slurry pipeline about270 kilometres long.
Bauxite and other minerals. Bauxite, the ore of aluminium, is formed by the deepweathering of aluminium-rich rocks in humid tropical conditions, which is why it caps the plateau surfaces of easternIndia. Odisha holds about 53 per cent of the national resource and is the largest producer; Panchpatmali in Koraput isamong Asia’s largest bauxite mines. Andhra Pradesh follows with about 16 per cent and Gujarat with about 8 per cent.Manganese, essential to steel-making, comes chiefly from Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka; copper fromKhetri in Rajasthan, Malanjkhand in Madhya Pradesh and Singhbhum in Jharkhand; and mica, once an Indian monopoly, from theKoderma–Gaya–Hazaribagh belt and the Nellore belt of Andhra Pradesh.
Tamil Nadu. The State is not a coal State but it is a lignite State, and a very richone. Its lignite reserve of about 34,764 million tonnes — Mannargudi 24,204 MT, Neyveli 8,665.93 MT andRamanathapuram 1,896 MT — is the largest in India and about 55.3 per cent of the national total. Tamil Nadu alsoleads the country in vermiculite (about 75 per cent), dunite (about 69 per cent), garnet (about 59 per cent) andmolybdenum (about 52 per cent), and holds roughly 30 per cent of India’s titanium minerals. Magnesite and dunite areworked in the Chalk Hills of Salem, where the resource is about 40.5 million tonnes; ilmenite, rutile, garnet and zirconare recovered from the beach sands of Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam andThiruvallur. Limestone for the cement industry comes from Ariyalur, Perambalur, Dindigul and Tirunelveli.
Conservation and law. Minerals are exhaustible and non-renewable; a deposit once mined isgone for ever. Mining in India is governed by the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. Thecomprehensive amendment of 2015 made auction the compulsory method of granting mineral concessions, and established theDistrict Mineral Foundation for the welfare of mining-affected people and the National Mineral Exploration Trust to fundexploration. The amendment of 2023 opened the exploration of critical and atomic minerals to the private sector, and in2025 the Government launched the National Critical Mineral Mission, under which 24 critical minerals stand listedin Part D of Schedule I and the Geological Survey of India is to carry out about 1,200 exploration projects between2024–25 and 2030–31. Recycling, substitution by alternative materials and stricter reclamation of mined landare the standard answers whenever the examiner asks about mineral conservation.
