⚗️ Metals and Non-Metals — Reactivity Series, Extraction & Alloys

🎯 Key Points |
1Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the Earth’s crust; oxygen is the most abundant element overall, and iron is the second most abundant metal.
2Reactivity series (high → low): K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al, Zn, Fe, Pb, [H], Cu, Hg, Ag, Au, Pt.
3Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature; bromine is the only non-metal that is liquid.
4Graphite is the exception among non-metals — it conducts electricity because each carbon atom has one free delocalised electron.
5Diamond is the hardest natural substance and has the highest melting point among non-metals — both are allotropes of carbon.
6Amphoteric oxides react with both acids and bases — Al₂O₃, ZnO, PbO and SnO.
Al₂O₃, ZnO, PbO, SnO.
7Every ore is a mineral, but every mineral is not an ore — an ore is a mineral from which metal can be extracted profitably. The earthy impurity in an ore is called gangue.
8Roasting converts a sulphide ore into its oxide by heating in excess air; calcination converts a carbonate ore into its oxide by heating in limited air.
9The ore of aluminium is bauxite (Al₂O₃·2H₂O). It is purified by Bayer’s process using hot NaOH; the insoluble residue left behind is called red mud.
10Aluminium metal is obtained by the Hall–Héroult process — electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite (Na₃AlF₆), which lowers the melting point from about 2050 °C to roughly 950–980 °C.
11Thermite (Goldschmidt) reaction: Fe₂O₃ + 2Al → 2Fe + Al₂O₃ + heat. The molten iron produced is used to weld broken rail tracks and cracked machine parts.
12Rusting of iron needs both oxygen and moisture. Rust is hydrated ferric oxide, Fe₂O₃·xH₂O — soft, flaky and reddish-brown.
13Galvanisation is the coating of iron or steel with a layer of zinc. Zinc is more reactive than iron, so it corrodes first and protects the iron underneath (sacrificial protection).
14Aqua regia is a 3:1 mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and concentrated nitric acid. It is one of the few reagents that dissolves gold and platinum.
📖 Detailed Notes — English

Physical properties. Metals are lustrous, malleable, ductile, sonorous and good conductors of heat and electricity. They generally have high density and high melting points. Almost every rule here has a memorable exception, and TNPSC loves exceptions. Mercury is liquid at room temperature. Sodium and potassium are so soft they can be cut with a knife, and both are stored under kerosene because they react violently with air and water. Gallium and caesium melt in the palm of the hand. Lead and mercury, though metals, are poor conductors of electricity. Silver is the best conductor of electricity, followed by copper and gold.

Non-metals are generally brittle, dull, non-sonorous and poor conductors. Bromine is the only liquid non-metal. Graphite conducts electricity, and iodine has a metallic lustre — two exceptions worth memorising. Diamond, another form of carbon, is the hardest natural substance known and has an exceptionally high melting point.

Chemical behaviour. Metals lose electrons and form positive ions; non-metals gain electrons and form negative ions. When a metal meets a non-metal, electrons transfer and an ionic (electrovalent) compound such as sodium chloride is formed. Metal oxides are basic, non-metal oxides are acidic. A small group of oxides — aluminium oxide, zinc oxide, lead oxide and tin oxide — are amphoteric: they behave as bases towards acids and as acids towards bases.

A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution. Drop an iron nail into copper sulphate solution and the blue colour fades to green while a reddish-brown copper deposit forms on the nail, because iron sits above copper in the reactivity series. Metals above hydrogen displace hydrogen from dilute acids; metals below hydrogen — copper, silver, gold — do not.

Metallurgy. The extraction of a metal from its ore involves three broad stages: concentration, reduction and refining. Concentration removes the gangue. Sulphide ores are concentrated by froth flotation, magnetic ores by magnetic separation, and bauxite by chemical leaching. The concentrated ore is then converted to an oxide, because oxides are the easiest compounds to reduce. Sulphide ores are roasted in excess air; carbonate ores are calcined in limited air.

The reduction method depends entirely on where the metal sits in the reactivity series. Highly reactive metals at the top — potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and aluminium — cannot be reduced by carbon, so they are obtained by electrolysis of their molten salts or oxides. Moderately reactive metals in the middle — zinc, iron, lead — are reduced by carbon or carbon monoxide in a furnace. Metals of low reactivity at the bottom — mercury and copper — are so weakly bonded to oxygen that simply heating their oxides releases the metal.

Aluminium: a complete case study. Bauxite ore is first purified by Bayer’s process, in which the ore is digested with hot concentrated sodium hydroxide under pressure. Alumina dissolves as sodium aluminate while iron oxide, silica and titanium dioxide remain behind as red mud. The aluminium hydroxide recovered is then calcined to give pure alumina. Because alumina melts only near 2050 °C, it is dissolved in molten cryolite with a little fluorspar, which brings the working temperature down to about 950–980 °C. Electrolysis in this bath — the Hall–Héroult process — deposits aluminium at the graphite-lined cathode while oxygen liberated at the graphite anode gradually burns the anode away. The metal obtained is 99.5–99.8 per cent pure.

Corrosion and its prevention. Corrosion is the slow eating away of a metal by the action of air, moisture and chemicals. Iron rusts to hydrated ferric oxide; copper develops a green coating of basic copper carbonate; silver turns black because of silver sulphide formed with hydrogen sulphide in the air. Rust is porous and flakes off, exposing fresh metal, which is why rusting never stops on its own. Aluminium, by contrast, forms a thin, tough, adherent oxide layer that seals the surface and protects the metal — the reason aluminium vessels last so long. Prevention methods include painting, oiling and greasing, galvanisation, electroplating, anodising and alloying.

Alloys. An alloy is a homogeneous mixture of a metal with another metal or non-metal, made to improve hardness, strength or corrosion resistance. Brass is copper with zinc; bronze is copper with tin; stainless steel is iron with chromium, nickel and a little carbon; duralumin is aluminium with copper, magnesium and manganese, and is used in aircraft bodies because it is light yet strong; solder is lead with tin and has a low melting point, making it ideal for joining electrical wires. An alloy containing mercury is called an amalgam. Pure gold is 24 carat, but ornaments are made from 22 carat gold alloyed with copper or silver, because pure gold is too soft to hold a shape.
