🎯 Key Points — 15 Must-Know Facts /
1
Soap is the sodium or potassium salt of a long-chain fatty acid. It is made by saponification — boiling an oil or fat with an alkali such as NaOH, which yields soap plus glycerol as a by-product.
2
A soap molecule has two ends — a water-loving (hydrophilic) –COO−Na+ head and an oil-loving (hydrophobic) hydrocarbon tail. This dual nature is the whole secret of cleaning.
3
In water, soap molecules cluster into spherical micelles with the tails pointing inward. Oil and grease get trapped inside the micelle and are rinsed away with the water.
4
Soap fails in hard water. The Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions present form insoluble calcium and magnesium stearate — the sticky white scum that wastes soap and leaves no lather.
5
Detergents are sodium salts of long-chain alkyl benzene sulphonic acids or alkyl hydrogen sulphates. Their calcium and magnesium salts are soluble, so detergents lather even in hard water.
6
Detergents with branched hydrocarbon chains are not attacked by bacteria — they are non-biodegradable and cause river foaming. Modern detergents use straight (linear) chains that break down naturally.
7
A polymer is a very large molecule built from many small repeating units called monomers. Polythene from ethene and starch from glucose are everyday examples.
8
Addition polymers (polythene, PVC, Teflon, polystyrene) form without losing any molecule; condensation polymers (nylon, terylene, bakelite) form with the elimination of small molecules such as water.
9
Nylon-6,6 is a condensation polymer of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid — each with six carbons, hence the name. It was developed by W. H. Carothers at DuPont (patent 1938).
10
Bakelite, the first synthetic thermosetting plastic, is made from phenol and formaldehyde. Being a hard electrical insulator it is used in switches, plugs and cooker handles.
11
Teflon is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Its strong C–F bonds make it chemically inert and heat resistant — hence non-stick cookware. Thermoplastics (polythene, PVC) soften and can be remoulded; thermosetting plastics (bakelite, melamine) set permanently.
12
Natural rubber is cis-1,4-polyisoprene. Heating it with sulphur — vulcanisation, discovered by Charles Goodyear — creates cross-links that make rubber harder, stronger and non-sticky, as in tyres.

14
Ordinary glass is soda-lime-silica glass — a mixture of sodium silicate, calcium silicate and silica. Glass is an amorphous supercooled liquid with no fixed melting point. Pyrex is borosilicate glass; cobalt gives blue, chromium green.
15
In medicine, antacids (Mg(OH)2, NaHCO3) neutralise stomach acid, analgesics (aspirin, paracetamol) relieve pain, antibiotics (penicillin — Alexander Fleming, 1928) kill microbes, antiseptics are applied to living tissue and disinfectants to non-living surfaces.

📖 Detailed Notes (English)

1. Soaps, Detergents and the Chemistry of Cleaning

Cleaning is a chemistry problem before it is a housekeeping one. Dirt clings to cloth and skin because it is held there by a thin film of oil, and oil and water refuse to mix. A soap molecule solves this by being two-faced. One end is an ionic carboxylate head, –COO−Na+, which is strongly attracted to water. The other end is a long hydrocarbon chain of fifteen to seventeen carbons that is repelled by water but perfectly comfortable in oil. When enough soap dissolves in water, these molecules arrange themselves into tiny spheres called micelles, with all the oily tails pointing inward and all the ionic heads facing the water outside. Grease is swallowed into the oily centre of each micelle, the sphere stays suspended in water because of its charged surface, and a rinse carries the whole package away. Agitation — scrubbing, or the drum of a washing machine — simply speeds up the process by breaking large oil drops into smaller ones that micelles can surround.

Soap itself is manufactured by saponification: an oil or fat is boiled with a strong alkali, usually sodium hydroxide, and the ester linkages in the fat are hydrolysed. The products are the sodium salts of the fatty acids — the soap — and glycerol, a valuable by-product sold on to the cosmetics and explosives industries. Potassium hydroxide instead of sodium hydroxide gives the softer potassium soaps used in shaving creams and liquid soaps. Common salt is then added to the boiled mixture so that the soap separates out and floats; this step is called salting out.

Soap has one well-known weakness: hard water. Water that has percolated through limestone carries dissolved calcium and magnesium ions, and these ions swap places with the sodium in soap to give calcium and magnesium stearates, which are insoluble. Instead of lather you get a sticky grey curd — the familiar scum on bathroom tiles — and soap keeps being consumed until every last hardness ion has been precipitated. Synthetic detergents were invented precisely to defeat this. A detergent is typically the sodium salt of a long-chain alkyl benzene sulphonic acid or an alkyl hydrogen sulphate, and because the calcium and magnesium salts of sulphonic acids are freely soluble, a detergent lathers in hard water, in sea water and even in slightly acidic water where soap would be decomposed. The trade-off is environmental. Early detergents used highly branched hydrocarbon chains that soil bacteria could not digest, so they survived sewage treatment and produced the notorious banks of foam on rivers. Manufacturers now use straight-chain (linear) alkyl benzene sulphonates, which micro-organisms break down readily, making modern detergents largely biodegradable.

2. Polymers: Plastics, Fibres and Rubber

A polymer is a giant molecule assembled by linking thousands of identical small units called monomers; the process is polymerisation and the number of repeating units is the degree of polymerisation. Nature does this too — cellulose is a polymer of glucose, proteins are polymers of amino acids, and natural rubber is a polymer of isoprene — but the synthetic polymers of the last century reshaped daily life. For the examination, the single most useful distinction is the mechanism. In addition polymerisation monomers containing a double bond simply join end to end with nothing eliminated, which is how ethene becomes polythene, vinyl chloride becomes PVC, tetrafluoroethylene becomes Teflon and styrene becomes polystyrene. In condensation polymerisation two different monomers react repeatedly with the loss of a small molecule, usually water: hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid give nylon-6,6, ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid give terylene (Dacron), and phenol with formaldehyde gives bakelite.

A second classification is by behaviour on heating. Thermoplastics such as polythene, PVC and polystyrene soften when warmed and can be melted and remoulded again and again, which is why they can be recycled. Thermosetting plastics such as bakelite and melamine undergo irreversible cross-linking when first moulded; heat them again and they char rather than soften, which makes them ideal for electrical switches, plug tops and cooker handles. Nylon, the first fully synthetic fibre, was developed by W. H. Carothers at DuPont and patented in 1938; it is strong, elastic and resistant to abrasion, which took it from parachutes and ropes to stockings and fishing nets. Teflon owes its remarkable inertness and non-stick character to the exceptional strength of its carbon–fluorine bonds. Natural rubber, chemically cis-1,4-polyisoprene, is soft and sticky and loses strength when warm; heating it with sulphur introduces cross-links between the chains in the process called vulcanisation, discovered by Charles Goodyear, and the result is the tough, elastic material of motor tyres.

3. Cement, Concrete and Glass

Ordinary Portland Cement is made by burning a carefully proportioned mixture of limestone and clay in a rotary kiln at about 1400–1500 °C. The product, a hard nodular material called clinker, is ground to a fine powder. By composition, cement is roughly 60–67% lime (CaO), 17–25% silica (SiO2), 3–8% alumina and 0.5–6% iron oxide, with small amounts of magnesia and alkalis. Crucially, about 2–3% gypsum (calcium sulphate) is ground along with the clinker, and its job is to retard the initial setting — without it, cement paste would stiffen almost at once and be impossible to place. Too much lime makes cement expand and crack; too little makes it weak. When water is added, the calcium silicates and aluminates hydrate, an exothermic reaction that first sets the paste and then hardens it over weeks. Cement mixed with sand gives mortar; cement with sand and crushed stone gives concrete; and concrete cast around steel bars gives reinforced cement concrete, which combines concrete’s strength in compression with steel’s strength in tension.

Glass is chemically a supercooled liquid rather than a true solid: it is amorphous, has no orderly crystal lattice and therefore no sharp melting point, softening gradually over a range instead. Ordinary window and bottle glass is soda-lime-silica glass, obtained by fusing sand (silica) with sodium carbonate and limestone, and it is essentially a mixture of sodium silicate and calcium silicate in excess silica. Replacing some of the soda and lime with boron oxide gives borosilicate glass (Pyrex), whose very low thermal expansion lets it take sudden temperature changes in laboratory and kitchen ware. Lead oxide gives dense flint glass with a high refractive index for lenses and prisms, while metal oxides act as colourants — cobalt for deep blue, chromium for green, manganese for violet and cuprous oxide for red. Rapidly cooling glass under controlled stress gives toughened safety glass; laminating it with a plastic sheet gives the windscreen glass that cracks without flying apart.

4. Chemistry in Medicine and Food

Medicinal chemistry is classified by what a drug does. Antacids such as magnesium hydroxide, aluminium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate neutralise excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach, while modern drugs such as ranitidine and omeprazole reduce acid secretion at its source. Analgesics relieve pain: aspirin and paracetamol are the familiar non-narcotic examples, aspirin also acting as an antipyretic and a blood thinner, while morphine is a narcotic analgesic. Antibiotics kill or inhibit micro-organisms; penicillin, discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 from the mould Penicillium notatum, began the antibiotic era. Antiseptics such as dettol and tincture of iodine are safe enough for living tissue and wounds, whereas disinfectants such as phenol and chlorine are stronger agents for floors, drains and instruments — the same compound can serve as either depending on concentration, which is a favourite examination point. Food chemistry adds its own list: preservatives such as sodium benzoate and sodium metabisulphite prevent spoilage, antioxidants such as BHA and BHT stop fats turning rancid, and artificial sweeteners give sweetness without calories — saccharin, discovered in 1879 and roughly 300 times as sweet as sucrose, and aspartame, about 200 times as sweet but unstable at cooking temperatures, so it suits cold foods and soft drinks rather than baking.
