Nannool & Aintilakkanam — The Tamil Grammar Tradition
Tamil is among the very few living languages that has kept an unbroken grammatical tradition alive for more than two thousand years. That tradition is described as aintilakkanam, the five-fold grammar: ezhuthu (letters and sounds), sol (words and their forms), porul (the subject matter of poetry), yappu (metre and prosody) and ani (figures of speech). Tholkappiyam, the oldest grammar that survives, deals with the first three. Nannool, written many centuries later, deliberately limits itself to two — ezhuthu and sol — and yet became the grammar that generations of Tamil students actually learned by heart.
Author, Patron and Date
Nannool was composed by Pavananthi Munivar, a Jain (Samana) ascetic. Tradition records that he wrote it at the request of Seeyagangan, a chieftain of the Ganga line who held sway in the Kongu country. The work is generally placed in the 12th–13th century CE. The very name Nannool means simply “the good book”, and the author sets out in his preface exactly what makes a book good — a rare instance of a grammar that begins by defining its own standards.
The Payiram — a grammar of books themselves
Before a single letter is discussed, Nannool devotes 55 nurpas to the payiram or preface, which is of two kinds: pothuppayiram (the general preface, applicable to all books) and sirappuppayiram (the special preface of this particular work). This section is a favourite hunting ground for examiners. It sets out the ten merits that a good book should possess and the ten defects it must avoid; it names the thirty-two uthigal, the methods by which a subject may be expounded; and it describes the qualities expected of the teacher (asiriyar), of the student (maanaakkar) and of the commentary (urai). Few grammars anywhere pause so carefully to explain how learning itself should be conducted.
Ezhuthathikaram — 202 nurpas
The chapter on letters runs to 202 nurpas and is divided into five iyals: ezhuthiyal (the letters and their classification), pathaviyal (word-forms and their endings), uyireettup punariyal (the joining of words ending in vowels), meyeettup punariyal (the joining of words ending in consonants) and urupu punariyal (the joining of case suffixes). Here Nannool sets out the Tamil alphabet — twelve uyir (vowels), eighteen mei (consonants), the aytham, and the uyirmei letters formed by their combination — and then gives the rules of punarchi, the sandhi or euphonic combination that governs how Tamil words fuse when they stand together. It is this treatment of punarchi, clearer and more systematic than the older text, that made Nannool indispensable.
Sollathikaram — 205 nurpas
The chapter on words has 205 nurpas in five iyals: peyariyal (nouns), vinaiyiyal (verbs), pothuviyal (matters common to both), idaiyiyal (particles) and uriyiyal (qualifying or expressive words). Nannool keeps the classical four-fold division of parts of speech — peyar, vinai, idai, uri — and also the four-fold classification of vocabulary into iyarchol (native words in ordinary use), thirichol (literary or altered words), thisaichol (regional words) and vadachol (Sanskrit-derived words).
Nannool and Tholkappiyam
Nannool does not set out to replace Tholkappiyam; it openly follows it. About seven nurpas are lifted directly from the older grammar. What Pavananthi Munivar does is to prune what had become obsolete, reorder the material for teaching, and state the rules in language a student of his own century could follow. The two are therefore complementary rather than rival: Tholkappiyam is the fuller and older authority, Nannool the practical classroom text. For the same reason Nannool is classed as a muthal nool — an original, primary grammar — even though its scope is narrower.
Commentaries
Nannool attracted an unusually rich body of commentary. The oldest surviving urai is that of Mayilainathar (14th century). Later commentators include Sankara Namachivayar and Shivagnana Munivar; in the nineteenth century Arumuga Navalar produced the widely used Kandigai urai, which carried Nannool into modern Tamil schooling.
The other limbs of aintilakkanam
Since Nannool covers only two of the five branches, TNPSC questions often test the texts that supply the rest. Yappu (prosody) is handled by Yapperungalam and its verse summary Yapperungalakkarikai, both by Amithasagarar. Ani (rhetoric and figures of speech) is handled by Thandiyalangaram, modelled on the Sanskrit Kavyadarsa of Dandin. For porul, the puram side is covered by Purapporul Venbamalai of Iyyanarithanar (9th century CE), which arranges puram poetry under twelve thinais, while the aham side is covered by works such as Agapporul Vilakkam of Narkaviraja Nambi.
Why this matters for TNPSC
In the General Tamil paper, questions on Nannool are almost always direct and factual: who wrote it, who patronised it, how many nurpas, which adhikarams, how many uthigal, which iyal deals with what. Candidates who memorise the number set — 462 = 55 + 202 + 205 — together with the two adhikarams, the ten iyals and the five-fold aintilakkanam scheme can secure these marks with certainty. Pair this lesson with the earlier Athiyaman Academy notes on Tholkappiyam and the Tamil epics for complete coverage of the literature section.
