Founding of the Maurya Empire

The Maurya Empire, founded in 321 BCE by Chandragupta Maurya, was the first truly pan-Indian empire in history. The Nanda dynasty ruled Magadha before Chandragupta. With the strategic guidance of Kautilya (Chanakya/Vishnugupta), Chandragupta overthrew Dhana Nanda — the last Nanda ruler — and established his empire with Pataliputra (modern Patna, Bihar) as its capital. Kautilya’s Arthashastra, written in Sanskrit, is a masterpiece on statecraft, economics, military strategy, and law — essential reading for understanding Mauryan governance.

Chandragupta Maurya’s Conquests

Chandragupta was the first Indian king to unify most of the subcontinent. In 305 BCE, he defeated Seleucus Nicator (Alexander’s successor in the east) and gained Baluchistan, eastern Afghanistan, and lands west of the Indus. In exchange, Seleucus received 500 war elephants and a marriage alliance. Seleucus sent his ambassador Megasthenes to the Mauryan court; Megasthenes’s Indica is a vital Greek source on ancient India. In his final years, Chandragupta embraced Jainism, abdicated in favour of his son Bindusara (~298 BCE), and fasted to death at Shravanabelagola in Karnataka in the Jain tradition of Sallekhana.

Bindusara

Bindusara (298–272 BCE), the second Maurya emperor, extended the empire deep into the Deccan plateau. The Greeks called him Amitraghata (Slayer of Enemies); Indian sources call him Simhasena. He maintained diplomatic ties with Antiochus I of Syria and Ptolemy II of Egypt. He followed the Ajivika sect.

Ashoka the Great

Emperor Ashoka (268–232 BCE) was the greatest Maurya ruler. The Kalinga War of 261 BCE — against modern Odisha — was catastrophic: ~100,000 soldiers killed, 150,000 taken prisoner. Devastated by the carnage, Ashoka converted to Buddhism and replaced Bherighosha (war drums) with Dhamma Vijaya (conquest through righteousness). His Dhamma was not a formal religion but a universal moral code: Ahimsa (non-violence), religious tolerance, compassion, charity, and respect for all living beings.

Ashoka’s Edicts and Administration

Ashoka inscribed his Dhamma on rock faces and polished pillars across the empire — in Prakrit/Brahmi script, Kharoshthi in the northwest, and Greek/Aramaic in Afghanistan. The Mauryan administration was highly centralized: the emperor was supreme, assisted by the Mantriparishad (Council of Ministers). The five provincial capitals were Taxila (northwest), Ujjain (west), Tosali (east/Kalinga), Suvarnagiri (south), and Pataliputra (centre). The village (Grama), headed by the Gramika, was the basic administrative unit. Yuktas handled revenue; Rajjukas managed land measurement.

Third Buddhist Council and Ashoka’s Legacy

Around 250 BCE, Ashoka patronized the Third Buddhist Council at Pataliputra, presided by Moggaliputta Tissa, which compiled the Abhidhamma Pitaka. Ashoka then sent missionaries to Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Central Asia, Greece, and Egypt — making Buddhism a world religion. His architectural legacy: 84,000 stupas, the Sanchi Stupa, and the Sarnath Lion Capital (India’s national emblem). The Ashoka Chakra at the centre of India’s flag derives from his Dhamma Chakra.

Decline of the Maurya Empire

After Ashoka’s death (232 BCE), the empire declined rapidly due to weak successors, heavy military expenditure, treasury depletion from religious donations, and regional revolts. The last Maurya ruler, Brihadratha, was assassinated by his army commander Pushyamitra Shunga in 185 BCE, founding the Shunga dynasty.

மகாவீரர் அசோகர்

மௌரிய வம்சத்தின் மிகச் சிறந்த மன்னர் அசோகர் (கி.மு. 268–232). கி.மு. 261-ல் நடைபெற்ற களிங்க போர் இந்திய வரலாற்றின் மிக இரத்தஆறு ஓடிய போர்களில் ஒன்று — ஏறக்குறைய 1 லட்சம் வீரர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டனர், 1.5 லட்சம் பேர் சிறைபிடிக்கப்பட்டனர். இந்த படுகொலையால் மனம் வெதும்பிய அசோகர் பௌத்தத்தை ஏற்றார். படையெடுப்பை கைவிட்டு தர்ம விஜயம் என்ற கொள்கையை ஏற்றார். அசோகரின் தர்மம்: அஹிம்சை, பெரியோரை மதித்தல், இரக்கம், தர்மம், உண்மை பேசுதல்.

அசோகரின் கல்வெட்டுகள் மற்றும் நிர்வாகம்

மௌரிய பேரரசின் வீழ்ச்சி
