🧪 Acids, Bases and Salts — pH Scale & Everyday Chemicals

🎯 Key Points |
1An acid furnishes H⁺ (hydronium, H₃O⁺) ions in water; a base furnishes OH⁻ ions — the Arrhenius definition.

2The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, where pH = −log[H⁺]. It was introduced by the Danish chemist S. P. L. Sørensen in 1909.

3pH 7 = neutral (pure water), below 7 = acidic, above 7 = basic. A change of one pH unit means a tenfold change in H⁺ concentration.

4Human blood pH is 7.35–7.45 (slightly alkaline); gastric juice ≈ 1.2; lemon juice ≈ 2.2; milk of magnesia ≈ 10.

5Litmus is a natural indicator obtained from lichen. Acids turn blue litmus red; bases turn red litmus blue.

6Phenolphthalein is colourless in acid and pink in base. Methyl orange is red in acid and yellow in base.

7Acid + Metal → Salt + Hydrogen gas. The gas burns with a “pop” sound when a burning splinter is brought near it.

8Acid + Metal carbonate → Salt + Water + CO₂. The CO₂ turns lime water milky — the standard test for carbon dioxide.

9Neutralisation: Acid + Base → Salt + Water. It is an exothermic reaction (heat is released).

10Chlor-alkali process: electrolysis of brine (concentrated NaCl solution) gives NaOH, Cl₂ at the anode and H₂ at the cathode.

11Baking soda = NaHCO₃ (sodium hydrogen carbonate); Washing soda = Na₂CO₃·10H₂O; Bleaching powder = CaOCl₂.

12Plaster of Paris (CaSO₄·½H₂O) is made by heating gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) to about 373 K (100 °C). It is used to set fractured bones.

13Tooth decay begins when the pH inside the mouth falls below 5.5. Toothpastes are basic, so they neutralise the excess acid.

14Rain with pH below 5.6 is called acid rain. A bee sting injects methanoic (formic) acid — rubbing baking soda relieves it.

📖 Detailed Notes — English

Understanding Acids and Bases

Acids and bases are two of the most fundamental classes of chemical compounds, and TNPSC has asked questions from this chapter in almost every General Science paper. According to the Arrhenius concept, an acid is a substance that releases hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water, while a base releases hydroxide ions (OH⁻). Because a bare proton cannot exist freely in water, the H⁺ ion immediately attaches itself to a water molecule and forms the hydronium ion (H₃O⁺). This is why acids conduct electricity only in aqueous solution — dry hydrogen chloride gas does not.

Acids taste sour and turn blue litmus red. Common examples include hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach, sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄) in car batteries, nitric acid (HNO₃) used in fertiliser manufacture, acetic acid (CH₃COOH) in vinegar, citric acid in lemons and oranges, lactic acid in curd, tartaric acid in tamarind and oxalic acid in tomatoes. Bases taste bitter, feel soapy and turn red litmus blue — sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂, slaked lime) and ammonium hydroxide (NH₄OH) are the familiar ones. A base that dissolves in water is called an alkali; all alkalis are bases, but not all bases are alkalis.

Acids that ionise almost completely in water are strong acids (HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃); those that ionise only partially are weak acids (CH₃COOH, H₂CO₃). The same logic separates strong bases (NaOH, KOH) from weak bases (NH₄OH, Mg(OH)₂).

The pH Scale

The strength of an acid or base is measured on the pH scale, proposed by the Danish chemist S. P. L. Sørensen in 1909. The letter “p” stands for the German potenz, meaning power, so pH literally means “power of hydrogen”. Mathematically, pH = −log₁₀[H⁺]. The scale normally runs from 0 to 14. Pure water at 25 °C has a pH of exactly 7 and is neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic and anything above 7 is basic. Because the scale is logarithmic, a solution of pH 3 is ten times more acidic than one of pH 4 and a hundred times more acidic than one of pH 5. Universal indicator, a mixture of several dyes, gives a different colour for each pH value and is the quickest laboratory method of estimating pH.

The pH of familiar substances is a favourite one-mark question: gastric juice about 1.2, lemon juice about 2.2, vinegar about 3, tomato juice about 4, black coffee about 5, milk about 6.6, pure water 7, human blood 7.35–7.45, sea water about 8, baking soda solution about 9, milk of magnesia about 10 and sodium hydroxide solution close to 14.

pH in Everyday Life

Our body works within a very narrow pH band; human blood must stay between 7.35 and 7.45, and even a small deviation causes acidosis or alkalosis. Plants grow best in soil that is close to neutral — farmers add quicklime or slaked lime to correct acidic soil and gypsum to correct alkaline soil. When we eat sugary food, bacteria in the mouth produce acid; once the pH inside the mouth drops below 5.5, the enamel (calcium phosphate, the hardest substance in the body) starts to dissolve and tooth decay begins. Basic toothpaste neutralises the excess acid. Rain water is normally slightly acidic (pH about 5.6) because dissolved carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid; when oxides of sulphur and nitrogen from industry dissolve in it, the pH falls further and it becomes acid rain, which damages monuments, forests and aquatic life.

Salts and Chemicals from Common Salt

A salt is formed when the hydrogen of an acid is replaced by a metal, that is, by neutralisation. A salt of a strong acid and a strong base (NaCl) is neutral; a salt of a strong acid and a weak base (NH₄Cl) is acidic; a salt of a weak acid and a strong base (Na₂CO₃) is basic.

Sodium chloride is the raw material for an entire industry. In the chlor-alkali process, electricity is passed through concentrated brine; sodium hydroxide is left in the solution, chlorine is liberated at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode. Passing chlorine over dry slaked lime gives bleaching powder, CaOCl₂, used to bleach paper and cloth and to disinfect drinking water. Baking soda, NaHCO₃, made by Solvay’s process, releases carbon dioxide on heating and so acts as a raising agent in baking; it is also an antacid and is used in soda-acid fire extinguishers. Heating baking soda gives sodium carbonate, and recrystallising it gives washing soda, Na₂CO₃·10H₂O, which removes the permanent hardness of water. Finally, heating gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) to about 373 K drives off three-quarters of the water and gives Plaster of Paris, CaSO₄·½H₂O, a white powder that sets into a hard solid when mixed with water — which is why it is used for plaster casts, toys, decorative work and smoothing walls.
