Global Indices & Reports 2026 — India’s Rank at a Glance |
🎯 Key Points |
Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2026, released in October 2026, places India 100th out of 122 ranked countries with a score of 24.1, shared with Ethiopia.
GHI is published jointly by Concern Worldwide (Ireland), Welthungerhilfe (Germany) and Helvetas (Switzerland). The global GHI score is 18.1.
GHI uses four indicators — undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting and under-five mortality. India: 9.8%, 29.3%, 19.0% and 2.7%.
A GHI score of 20.0–34.9 is the “serious” band, where India has stayed since 2012. Child stunting moved from “very high” to “high”, but child wasting rose to 19.0% — the highest in South Asia.
The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development has contested GHI methodology — three of the four indicators measure only children, and undernourishment rests on a small opinion-poll sample.
Global Innovation Index (GII) 2026, published by WIPO (Geneva): India 38th of 139 economies — 1st among 36 lower-middle-income economies and 1st of 11 in Central & Southern Asia.
GII 2026 top five: Switzerland (1st for the 16th consecutive year), Sweden, the United States, the Republic of Korea and Singapore.

Happiness ranks rest on six variables: GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom to make life choices, generosity and perception of corruption — using Gallup World Poll data.
Human Development Report 2025 (UNDP), themed “A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI”: India 130th of 193, HDI 0.685 — medium human development, just below the 0.700 high threshold.
“A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI” கருப்பொருளுடன் UNDP வெளியிட்ட மனித வளர்ச்சி அறிக்கை 2025: 193 நாடுகளில் இந்தியா 130-வது இடம், HDI 0.685 — நடுத்தர மனித வளர்ச்சி; 0.700 எனும் உயர் வரம்பை நெருங்கியுள்ளது.
India’s HDI components: life expectancy 72 years, expected schooling 13 years, mean schooling 6.9 years, per-capita GNI $9,047 (2021 PPP). HDI up over 53% since 1990. Iceland tops (0.972); South Sudan last.

World Press Freedom Index 2026 (Reporters Without Borders, Paris): India 157th of 180. Corruption Perceptions Index 2025 (Transparency International, Berlin; released February 2026): India 91st of 182, scored 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
Henley Passport Index 2026 (Henley & Partners, 13 January 2026, on IATA data): India 80th, up from 85th, with 55 visa-free / visa-on-arrival destinations. Singapore 1st (192 destinations) for a third time; Afghanistan last (101st).
Sustainable Development Report 2025 (UN SDSN): India 99th of 167 with score 67 — its first entry into the top 100 (109th in 2024). Finland 1st. Only 17% of SDG targets are on track for 2030. Domestically, NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index has Kerala and Uttarakhand jointly on top and Bihar last.

📖 Detailed Notes (English)
Why indices matter for TNPSC
Every TNPSC General Studies paper carries a Current Events block, and global rankings are the single most predictable question type inside it. The examiner rarely asks you to analyse a report. The question is almost always a one-line fact — which agency publishes it, where India stands, how many countries were ranked, or which country came first. Learning indices as a compact table rather than as flowing prose is therefore the efficient strategy, and the table below is built exactly on those four columns.
Global Hunger Index 2026
Released in October 2026 by Concern Worldwide of Ireland, Welthungerhilfe of Germany and Helvetas of Switzerland, the GHI placed India 100th among 122 ranked countries with a score of 24.1, a position shared with Ethiopia. A score between 20.0 and 34.9 falls in the serious band, where India has remained since 2012. The index is built on four indicators drawn from three dimensions — inadequate food supply, measured by undernourishment; child undernutrition, measured by stunting and wasting; and child mortality. India’s figures are undernourishment 9.8 per cent, child stunting 29.3 per cent, child wasting 19.0 per cent and under-five mortality 2.7 per cent. Two movements deserve attention. Stunting has improved enough to shift India from the very high to the high category, down from 50 per cent in 2000. Wasting, however, rose from 16.9 to 19.0 per cent — the highest level in South Asia. The global GHI score stands at 18.1. The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development has consistently contested the methodology, arguing that three of the four indicators relate only to children and that the undernourishment estimate rests on a small opinion-poll sample rather than measured food intake.
Innovation, peace and happiness
The Global Innovation Index 2026, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization — a United Nations specialised agency headquartered in Geneva — ranked India 38th among 139 economies. More valuable for answer-writing is India’s relative position: first among the 36 lower-middle-income economies and first among the 11 economies of Central and Southern Asia. Switzerland led for the sixteenth consecutive year, followed by Sweden, the United States, the Republic of Korea and Singapore. The Global Peace Index 2026, from the Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace, placed India 127th of 163 countries and territories with a score of 2.409, a fall of three places; the index covers roughly 99.7 per cent of the world’s population. Iceland was the most peaceful nation for the nineteenth year running and Russia the least peaceful, while Bhutan at 16th remained South Asia’s best performer, ahead of Sri Lanka (67), Nepal (111), Bangladesh (117), India (127), Pakistan (152) and Afghanistan (157). The World Happiness Report 2026 put India 116th of 147 countries, an improvement of two places, with Finland first for the ninth straight year and Afghanistan last. Its 2026 edition examined the effect of social media on young people’s wellbeing and the broader decline of happiness in developed economies.
Human development and governance
The UNDP’s Human Development Report 2025, themed A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI, ranked India 130th of 193 countries and territories with an HDI of 0.685 — medium human development, just short of the 0.700 high-development threshold. India’s life expectancy reached 72 years, expected schooling 13 years, mean schooling 6.9 years and per-capita gross national income 9,047 dollars in 2021 purchasing-power-parity terms. The HDI has risen by more than 53 per cent since 1990, faster than both the global and the South Asian average. Iceland topped the table at 0.972 and South Sudan was last. On governance measures India sits considerably lower: 157th of 180 on the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index 2026, and 91st of 182 on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index 2025, released in February 2026, where scores run from 0 for highly corrupt to 100 for very clean.
Mobility and the Sustainable Development Goals
The Henley Passport Index 2026, released on 13 January 2026 by Henley and Partners using International Air Transport Association data, lifted India to 80th from 85th, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to 55 destinations. Singapore topped the list for a third time with 192 destinations, and Afghanistan was last at 101st with 24. The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s Sustainable Development Report 2025 placed India 99th of 167 countries with a score of 67 — India’s first appearance inside the top 100, up from 109th in 2024 and 112th in 2023 — while warning that only 17 per cent of SDG targets are on course for 2030 and that five targets have actually reversed since 2015. Finland led that index, followed by Sweden and Denmark. Domestically, NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index remains the key national instrument, with Kerala and Uttarakhand jointly at the top and Bihar at the bottom in its most recent edition. For the examination, pair each index with its publisher and its headquarters city; that pairing alone answers the majority of questions set on this topic.
“A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI” எனும் கருப்பொருளுடன் ஐ.

💡 Memory Tips |
1. “HUNGER at a HUNDRED” — Global Hunger Index 2026: India exactly 100th, score 24.1, out of 122. The word hundred fixes both the rank and the fact that it is the hunger index.
2. “Three P’s, three ranks: Peace 127, Press 157, Purity 91” — Peace Index 127, Press Freedom 157, and “purity” (Corruption Perceptions) 91. Peace is the lowest number of the three.
3. “Switzerland Innovates, Iceland Pacifies, Finland Smiles, Singapore Travels” — the four number-one countries: GII Switzerland, Peace Iceland, Happiness Finland, Passport Singapore.
4. “One-three-zero, point six-eight-five” — chant HDR 2025 as a rhythm: rank 130, HDI 0.685, out of 193, category medium.
5. “SUM-CM” for the four GHI indicators — Stunting, Undernourishment, Mortality (under-five), Child Melting, i.e. wasting. Three of the four concern children — which is precisely the Government of India’s objection.
