Pathinenkeezhkanakku — The 18 Minor Didactic Works of Post-Sangam Tamil
When Tamil scholars of the later medieval period sat down to arrange the inherited body of classical poetry, they sorted it by the length of the poems rather than by their worth. Works whose individual poems ran long were grouped as Pathinenmerkanakku — the eighteen “upper count” texts, which include the Ettuthogai anthologies and the Pathuppattu idylls. Works whose poems were compact, usually four lines or fewer, were grouped as Pathinenkeezhkanakku, the eighteen “lower count” texts. The word keezh has misled many students: it is a measure of line-length, never of literary value. Indeed the single most celebrated book in all of Tamil, the Thirukkural, sits inside this “lower” group.
These eighteen books belong to the Sangam Maruviya Kaalam — the post-Sangam or transitional age, broadly placed between the second and sixth centuries CE, overlapping what historians call the Kalabhra interregnum. The mood of the literature changes sharply from the Sangam age. Where the earlier poets celebrated love, kings, battle-drums and the colours of the landscape, the poets of this age turn inward and ask how a person should live. Jainism and Buddhism were then powerful in the Tamil country, and a large number of these authors were Jain ascetics. That is why ideas such as ool (karma), kollamai (non-killing), the impermanence of wealth and the duty of giving run like a thread through the whole collection.
The internal arrangement is a favourite examination point. Of the eighteen, eleven deal with aram (ethics and right conduct), six deal with agam (the inner world of love) and only one deals with puram (the outer world of war and public life). That single puram text is Kalavali Narpathu by Poigaiyar, forty venbas on the battle at Kazhumalam in which the Chola king Kochenganan defeated the Chera Kanaikkal Irumporai. Tradition holds that Poigaiyar sang these verses to win the release of the captive Chera king — an episode TNPSC paper-setters return to again and again.
A striking feature of the ethical works is that several are named after Siddha medicinal compounds, because a moral precept was thought to cure the mind as a drug cures the body. Thirikadugam borrows the name of the three pungent drugs and packs three precepts into each of its hundred verses. Sirupanchamoolam takes the name of five minor medicinal roots and gives five precepts per verse. Elathi is named after the six-ingredient spice preparation and offers six ideas in each of its eighty verses. Nanmanikkadigai follows the same arithmetic logic with a jewellery image instead: four ideas set in one verse like four gems in one ornament.
Among the longer ethical texts, Naladiyar stands next only to the Kural. Its four hundred venbas were composed by Jain monks, and the traditional account says they were gathered and arranged into forty chapters of ten verses each by Padumanar. A well-loved legend tells of a Pandya king who, faced with too many palm-leaf verses, had them floated on the Vaigai; the four hundred that swam upstream were preserved as the Naladiyar. The work is revered as the Vellalar Vedham. Palamoli Nanuru of Munrurai Araiyanar is equally distinctive: every one of its four hundred verses closes on an old Tamil proverb, making it a priceless storehouse of folk wisdom. Acharakkovai of Peruvayin Mulliyar, by contrast, is a practical manual of daily decorum, and Muthumozhikkanchi of Kudalur Kizhar is the shortest book of all — ten sections of ten terse lines.
The six agam works carry forward the Sangam convention of the five thinais — kurinji, mullai, marutham, neythal and palai. Ainthinai Aimpathu, Ainthinai Ezhupathu, Thinaimozhi Aimpathu and Thinaimalai Nurraimpathu are built directly on that fivefold scheme, while Kar Narpathu confines itself to the mullai mood of the rainy season and the lover’s awaited return, and Kainnilai gives sixty verses spread over the thinais. For the examination, fix three things for every title: the author, the number of verses, and whether it is aram, agam or puram. Questions are almost always framed as a match-the-pair or an odd-one-out on exactly those three columns.

2 — (C) Elathi ·
3 — (C) Nanmanikkadigai — Vilambi Naganar ·
4 — (B) 11 Aram, 6 Agam, 1 Puram ·
5 — (D) Naladiyar has 40 chapters of 10 verses each, not 10 chapters of 40 · நாலடியார் 10 பாடல்கள் கொண்ட 40 அதிகாரங்களாக அமைந்தது
1. “3 – 4 – 5 – 6” medicine ladder: Thirikadugam = 3, Nanmanikkadigai = 4, Sirupanchamoolam = 5, Elathi = 6. The number hidden in the name is the number of ideas per verse.
2. “11 – 6 – 1 = 18”: read it as a phone-style code — Aram 11, Agam 6, Puram 1. Puram is one, and that one is KALavali Narpathu — KAL reminds you of kalam, the battlefield.
3. “NAAlu – NAAnooru”: Naaladiyar = naalu (four) lines × naanooru (four hundred) verses, arranged 40 × 10. Four is the number of the whole book.
4. The bitter-sweet twins: Innaa Narpathu (Kapilar) = what hurts; Iniyavai Narpathu (Pootham Chenthanar) = what is sweet. Both 40 verses. Remember “Ka-pilar tastes the bitter, Poo-tham tastes the sweet.”
5. “Proverb at the end = Palamoli”: if a question says “each verse ends with a proverb”, the answer is always Palamoli Nanuru (Munrurai Araiyanar, 400). If it says “shortest work / 10 × 10 lines”, the answer is Muthumozhikkanchi.
These are the recurring formats in which TNPSC Group examinations have framed questions on this unit. Practise them as patterns rather than as single-year questions.
