🎯 Key Points /
1
India’s soils are officially grouped by the ICAR into 8 major soil types: alluvial, black, red & yellow, laterite, arid/desert, forest & mountain, peaty & marshy, and saline & alkaline.
2
Alluvial soil is the most extensive soil of India — roughly 15 lakh sq km, about 45% of the land area — spread over the Indo-Gangetic-Brahmaputra plain and the coastal deltas.
3
Alluvium has two divisions: Khadar (new alluvium, renewed by yearly floods, more fertile) and Bhangar (old alluvium, higher ground, contains lime nodules called kankar).
4
Black soil (Regur / Black Cotton Soil) covers about 5.46 lakh sq km (~16.6%) and is formed from the weathering of Deccan Trap basaltic lava.
5
Black soil is rich in montmorillonite clay, so it swells when wet and cracks deeply when dry — the cracks mix surface matter downward, a property called self-ploughing. In soil taxonomy it is a Vertisol.
6
State share of black soil: Maharashtra (~27%) is highest, then Madhya Pradesh (~21%), Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. It is ideal for cotton, and holds moisture strongly.
7
Red soil forms from the weathering of ancient crystalline and metamorphic rocks in low-rainfall areas. Its red colour comes from ferric oxide (iron); it is poor in nitrogen, phosphorus and humus.
8
Laterite soil is produced by intense leaching under high temperature and heavy seasonal rainfall. It is acidic, rich in iron and aluminium, and supports tea, coffee, rubber and cashew plantations.
9
Arid / desert soil occurs in Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat and Haryana — sandy, saline, low in humus and moisture, with kankar layers restricting water percolation.
10
Peaty and marshy soils occur in Kuttanad (Kerala), the Sundarbans, coastal Odisha and parts of Tamil Nadu — heavy in organic matter, black, acidic and often waterlogged.
11
In Tamil Nadu, red soil covers more than two-thirds of the state’s area. The five broad TN soils are red, black, alluvial, laterite and saline (coastal).
12
TN distribution: alluvial in the Cauvery delta (Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam) and Kanniyakumari; black in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli; laterite in the Nilgiris and parts of Kancheepuram–Tiruvallur; saline along the Coromandel coast.
13
Soil erosion types to remember: sheet (uniform thin layer removed), rill (small finger channels), gully (deep channels forming ravines — worst in the Chambal basin), and wind erosion in arid Rajasthan.
14
Key conservation methods: contour bunding and contour ploughing on slopes, terrace farming, strip cropping, check dams and gully plugging, shelter belts against wind, mulching, crop rotation and afforestation.
15
Institutions and schemes: NBSS&LUP (National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning) is headquartered at Nagpur; the Soil Health Card Scheme was launched in 2015; World Soil Day is observed on 5 December.
📖 Detailed Notes (English)

Soil is the thin, living skin of the earth — a mixture of weathered rock, decayed organic matter, water, air and countless micro-organisms. For a country where nearly half the workforce still depends on agriculture, soil is not merely a Geography chapter; it is the foundation of food security, rural income and even internal migration. That is exactly why the TNPSC sets questions on soils in almost every Group examination, and why a candidate who has memorised the eight ICAR soil groups along with their parent rock, colour, chemistry, distribution and crops walks into the hall with several safe marks already banked.

1. How Indian soils are classified

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) divides the soils of India into eight major groups: alluvial, black, red and yellow, laterite, arid or desert, forest and mountain, peaty and marshy, and saline and alkaline. An older colonial-era classification recognised only four (alluvial, black, red, laterite), while modern soil taxonomy maps Indian soils onto international orders such as Inceptisols, Vertisols, Alfisols, Ultisols and Aridisols. For the exam, the ICAR eight-fold scheme is the safest answer unless the question explicitly asks for the taxonomic order.

2. Alluvial soil — the granary of India

Alluvial soil is transported soil, laid down by rivers rather than formed in situ. It blankets the great northern plain from Punjab to Assam and reappears in the deltas of the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery on the east coast and in narrow strips on the west coast. Covering roughly fifteen lakh square kilometres — close to forty-five per cent of India’s land surface — it is the single most important soil economically. It is generally loamy, rich in potash and lime but deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus and humus, which is why nitrogenous fertiliser consumption is highest in this belt.

Two sub-types must be distinguished. Khadar is the newer alluvium of the active floodplain, renewed by silt every monsoon, light in colour and highly fertile. Bhangar is the older alluvium of the terraces above flood level, darker, more clayey and studded with concretionary lime nodules known as kankar. A favourite objective question asks which of the two contains kankar — the answer is Bhangar.

3. Black soil — Regur, the cotton soil

Black soil, called regur in the Deccan, is a residual soil formed in situ from the weathering of the basaltic lava of the Deccan Traps, with some tracts also derived from gneiss and granite in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. It occupies about 5.46 lakh square kilometres, roughly one-sixth of the country, concentrated in Maharashtra (about 27 per cent of the black-soil area), Madhya Pradesh (about 21 per cent), Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and the western districts of Tamil Nadu, extending along the Narmada and Tapi valleys.

Its defining mineral is montmorillonite clay, which has a remarkable capacity to absorb water and swell. In the dry season the soil contracts and opens wide, deep cracks; loose surface material and organic matter tumble in, and when the rains return the soil swells and closes over them, effectively turning itself over. This natural mixing is called self-ploughing, and it is the reason black soil retains fertility without heavy manuring. Black soil is rich in lime, iron, magnesia, alumina and potash but poor in nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter. Its high moisture-retention makes it the classic rainfed cotton soil, and it also supports jowar, wheat, sugarcane, linseed, tobacco and citrus fruits. In taxonomy it belongs to the Vertisols.

4. Red and yellow soil

Red soil develops on the ancient crystalline and metamorphic rocks of the Peninsula in areas of comparatively low rainfall — the eastern and southern Deccan, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the Chota Nagpur plateau and much of Tamil Nadu. The red tint comes from the wide diffusion of iron in the form of ferric oxide; where the iron occurs in a hydrated form, the soil looks yellow. It is porous and friable, generally poor in nitrogen, phosphoric acid, lime and humus, but responds very well to fertiliser and irrigation. Groundnut, millets, pulses, potato and, on the better patches, cotton and wheat are grown on it.

5. Laterite soil

Laterite is a product of climate rather than parent rock. Under high temperature and heavy seasonal rainfall, alternate wet and dry spells cause intense leaching: silica is washed away while oxides of iron and aluminium are left behind and harden on exposure. The name comes from the Latin later, meaning brick, because the material is literally cut into building bricks in Kerala, Goa and coastal Karnataka. Laterite is acidic, low in nitrogen, phosphate, calcium and organic matter, and is found on the summits of the Western Ghats, the Eastern Ghats, the Rajmahal hills, Assam and Meghalaya. With manuring and irrigation it supports tea, coffee, rubber, cashew and coconut.

6. Arid, forest, peaty and saline soils

Arid or desert soil of Rajasthan, adjoining Gujarat and southern Haryana is sandy, saline and low in humus and moisture; a kankar layer beneath restricts infiltration. It becomes productive with canal irrigation, as the Indira Gandhi Canal command area demonstrates. Forest and mountain soils occupy the hill slopes of the Himalaya, the Western Ghats and the Nilgiris; they are loamy and silty in valleys, coarse-grained on upper slopes, acidic with low humus in snow-covered areas and fertile in the lower valleys. Peaty and marshy soils form where heavy rainfall and high humidity allow luxuriant vegetation to accumulate faster than it decomposes — Kuttanad in Kerala, the Sundarbans of West Bengal, coastal Odisha and pockets of Tamil Nadu; they are black, heavy, highly acidic and often waterlogged. Saline and alkaline soils, known locally as reh, kallar, usar or thur, occur in the drier parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and the coastal deltas, caused chiefly by over-irrigation and capillary rise of salts; they are reclaimed with gypsum and salt-tolerant crops.

7. Soils of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu shows five broad soil groups. Red soil dominates, covering more than two-thirds of the state and occurring in Vellore, Salem, Dharmapuri, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar and many other districts. Black soil is concentrated in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, sustaining the state’s cotton belt. Alluvial soil is confined mainly to the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam and to Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari, and is the backbone of paddy and sugarcane cultivation. Laterite soil appears in the Nilgiris and in patches of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Thanjavur. Saline soil hugs the Coromandel coast, where seawater ingress and evaporation concentrate salts.

8. Erosion, degradation and conservation

Soil erosion is the removal of the topsoil layer faster than it can be replaced. Sheet erosion strips a thin uniform layer and is deceptively invisible; rill erosion cuts finger-like channels; gully erosion deepens these into ravines, the worst example being the badlands of the Chambal basin in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh; and wind erosion shifts sand in the arid west. Deforestation, overgrazing, shifting cultivation, faulty ploughing along the slope and unscientific irrigation are the main human causes.

Conservation works on two fronts. Mechanical measures include contour bunding and contour ploughing across the slope, graded bunds, terrace farming on hillsides, check dams and gully plugs, and diversion channels above a gully head. Biological measures include afforestation, planting shelter belts of trees across the wind direction, strip cropping, cover crops, mulching, crop rotation and controlled grazing. Institutionally, the National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning at Nagpur maps and classifies Indian soils, the Soil Health Card Scheme launched in 2015 supplies farmers with nutrient status reports for their own fields, and World Soil Day is observed every year on 5 December. Watershed programmes such as the Integrated Watershed Management Programme, later folded into the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, carry out ravine reclamation and moisture conservation on a large scale.

For revision, always link each soil to four anchors — parent material, chemistry, region and crop. That single habit answers the majority of TNPSC soil questions.

💡 “A B R L A F P S”Alluvial, Black, Red, Laterite, Arid, Forest, Peaty, Saline. Read it as “All Boys Really Like A Free Picnic Sunday” to lock the ICAR eight in order.
💡 Khadar vs Bhangar: Khadar = Kottai puthusu (new, low, fertile). Bhangar = Big old bank with kankar. Both B’s go together.
💡 Black soil = 3 C’s: Cotton crop, Cracks (self-ploughing), Calcium-rich. And its parent rock is basalt from the Deccan Trap.
💡 Laterite = Latin ‘later’ = brick. Picture a red brick house in Kerala — hot, wet, leached, acidic, good for tea and coffee.
💡 Tamil Nadu soil ratio:2/3 is red” — red soil covers over two-thirds of TN. Black hugs the west (Coimbatore cotton), alluvium hugs the Cauvery delta, saline hugs the coast.
