🔊 Sound & Acoustics —

🎯 Key Points /
1

Sound is a longitudinal mechanical wave that needs a material medium (solid, liquid or gas) to travel; it cannot travel through vacuum.

2

Speed of sound in air at 20°C is about 343 m/s. It is fastest in solids, slower in liquids and slowest in gases.

3

Speed of sound in water is about 1481 m/s and in iron about 5120 m/s — roughly 4x and 15x faster than in air.

4

Speed of sound in air rises with temperature — about 0.6 m/s for every 1°C increase. It is faster in humid air than dry air.

5

Human audible range is 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Below 20 Hz is infrasound; above 20,000 Hz is ultrasound.

6

Pitch depends on frequency, loudness on amplitude, and quality (timbre) on waveform — these distinguish two sounds.

7

An echo is a reflected sound heard distinctly. To hear an echo the reflecting surface must be at least 17.2 m away.

8

Reverberation is the persistence of sound by repeated reflections when the surface is closer than 17 m (as in large halls).

9

SONAR (Sound Navigation And Ranging) uses ultrasound to find the depth, distance and speed of underwater objects like submarines and icebergs.

10

Ultrasound is used in medical scans (sonography, echocardiography), cleaning, welding and detecting flaws in metals.

11

The Doppler effect is the apparent change in frequency of sound when the source or listener moves — a passing train’s whistle sounds higher then lower.

12

Wave relation: v = f × λ (speed = frequency × wavelength). Bats and dolphins use ultrasound for echolocation.

📖 Detailed Notes (English)

What is sound? Sound is a form of energy produced by vibrating bodies. When an object vibrates, it pushes and pulls the surrounding particles of the medium, creating regions of compression (high pressure) and rarefaction (low pressure). These pressure variations travel outward as a longitudinal wave, in which the particles of the medium oscillate along the same direction as the wave moves. Because sound needs particles to pass on its vibrations, it can travel through solids, liquids and gases but never through a vacuum — this is why no sound is heard in outer space.

Speed of sound. The speed of sound depends on the medium and its temperature. It is fastest in solids because their particles are tightly packed and pass vibrations quickly, slower in liquids, and slowest in gases. In air at 20°C sound travels at roughly 343 m/s, in water about 1481 m/s, and in iron about 5120 m/s. Temperature matters: the speed in air increases by about 0.6 m/s for every 1°C rise, and sound moves faster in humid air than in dry air because water vapour lowers the effective density of air.

Characteristics of sound. Three properties describe a musical sound. Pitch depends on frequency — the higher the frequency, the shriller the sound. Loudness depends on amplitude — greater amplitude gives a louder sound, measured in decibels (dB). Quality or timbre depends on the waveform and lets us tell a flute from a violin even when they play the same note. The basic wave equation linking these is v = f × λ, where v is speed, f is frequency and λ is wavelength.

Reflection of sound — echo and reverberation. Sound obeys the laws of reflection. When reflected sound reaches the ear at least 0.1 second after the original, we hear a distinct echo. Since sound in air covers about 34.4 m in 0.1 s, the reflecting obstacle must be at least 17.2 m away for an echo to be heard. If the surface is closer, the reflections merge with the original sound and prolong it — this persistence is called reverberation, and it is controlled in auditoriums using sound-absorbing materials.

Infrasound, ultrasound and their uses. Humans hear frequencies from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Infrasound (below 20 Hz) is produced by earthquakes, volcanoes and by animals like elephants and whales. Ultrasound (above 20,000 Hz) has many applications: in SONAR to measure ocean depth and locate submarines and shoals of fish, in medical sonography and echocardiography, in cleaning delicate instruments, in welding, and in detecting cracks in metal blocks. Bats and dolphins naturally use ultrasound for echolocation. The Doppler effect — the change in observed frequency when a source or listener moves — explains why a train whistle sounds higher as it approaches and lower as it recedes, and it is used in radar speed guns and Doppler ultrasound.
