📖 Detailed Notes in English
The Asian Games now in progress
The single biggest sporting story on the calendar as these notes are written is the 20th Asian Games, which opened at Nagoya in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture on 19 September 2026 and will close on 4 October. Japan has hosted the continental showpiece twice before, at Tokyo in 1958 and at Hiroshima in 1994, so Nagoya becomes the third Japanese host city. The organisers chose the motto Imagine One Asia and a mascot named Honohon, whose shape is drawn from the shachihoko, the mythical fish-tailed creature that crowns Nagoya Castle. Forty-six National Olympic Committees, including an Asian Refugee Team, are contesting 469 gold medals spread over 43 sports and 71 disciplines. The Games also carry a symbolic weight for India, because they fall on the seventy-fifth anniversary of the very first Asian Games, which New Delhi hosted in 1951.
India’s contingent numbers 496 athletes across 36 sports, marking a twentieth consecutive appearance. Shooter Manu Bhaker and kabaddi captain Pawan Sehrawat carried the tricolour at the opening ceremony, Sehrawat having stepped in for shot-putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor. At the end of the sixth day of competition on 25 September, India had gathered 19 medals including two golds and was placed twelfth, some way behind a dominant China with 148 medals and hosts Japan with 105. The first gold came from the women’s cricket team, and the second from the pistol range, where Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet combined for 484.6 points to take the 10 m air pistol mixed team title. Aspirants should remember that a medal table during a live Games is a moving figure; the examination will normally ask about the final tally, the host, the motto and the mascot rather than a day-wise count. For Tamil Nadu candidates there is a particular point of pride, because Joshna Chinappa of Chennai and Velavan Senthilkumar of Salem reached the squash mixed doubles semi-final and so guaranteed India at least a bronze in that event.
Football: the first 48-team World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, staged jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico between 11 June and 19 July, was the first to be contested by 48 teams and the first spread across sixteen host cities in three countries. The final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, drew a crowd of 80,663 and went to extra time before Ferran Torres struck in the 106th minute to give Spain a 1-0 victory over Argentina. It is Spain’s second world title after 2010, and it denied Argentina a successive crown. Morocco took third place by beating Uruguay. The 2030 tournament will be hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with centenary matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, and Saudi Arabia will host in 2034.
Glasgow 2026 and the road to Ahmedabad
The Commonwealth Games returned to Glasgow from 23 July to 2 August 2026 in a deliberately compact form, with only ten sports on the programme after Victoria in Australia withdrew as host. The reduced schedule cost India several of its traditional strongholds, yet a contingent of 122 athletes still finished fourth with 39 medals, made up of 13 golds, 17 silvers and 9 bronzes. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, the opening ceremony flag bearer, won a third Commonwealth gold in the women’s 48 kg class. The boxing ring was India’s richest source of medals with seven golds, among them Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar and Jaismine Lamboria, who carried the flag at the closing ceremony. Judo produced a genuine first, as Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh became India’s earliest Commonwealth judo champions. Looking ahead, Commonwealth Sport has confirmed Ahmedabad as host of the centenary Games in 2030, bringing the event back to India for the first time since Delhi in 2010.
Winter Olympics and India’s cricket double
Italy staged the Winter Olympics at Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from 6 to 22 February 2026, offering 116 events in eight sports and sixteen disciplines to about 2,900 athletes from 92 nations. Norway confirmed its winter supremacy with 18 golds in a haul of 41 medals, ahead of the United States on 12 golds and the Netherlands and Italy on 10 each. India, as in every previous winter edition, returned without a medal. In cricket the year belonged emphatically to India. On 2 November 2025 the women’s team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, won a maiden World Cup at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, beating South Africa by 52 runs after Shafali Verma made 87 and Deepti Sharma was named player of the tournament. Four months later, on 8 March 2026, the men overwhelmed New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Jasprit Bumrah taking four wickets for fifteen runs and Sanju Samson collecting the player of the tournament award. India thus became the first country to win three men’s T20 World Cups and the first host nation to lift that trophy.
Governance and awards
The National Sports Governance Act, 2025, notified as Act No. 25 of 2025, received presidential assent on 18 August 2025 and came into force in part on 31 December 2025. It establishes a National Sports Board as the apex regulator with power to recognise, suspend and inquire into federations, and a National Sports Tribunal chaired by a serving or retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court or a High Court to settle sporting disputes outside doping and international jurisdiction. Executive committees of recognised bodies are capped at fifteen members and must include at least two sportspersons of outstanding merit, two athlete representatives and four women, while office bearers may serve three consecutive terms before a cooling-off period. Crucially for governance questions, recognised sports organisations are deemed public authorities under the Right to Information Act, 2005, in respect of their statutory functions, and a National Sports Election Panel of former election officials oversees their elections. On the honours side, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, India’s highest sporting award, carries a medallion, a citation and ₹25 lakh, and is presented by the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan; the Arjuna Award carries ₹15 lakh. The four Khel Ratna awardees for 2024 were shooter Manu Bhaker, chess world champion Gukesh Dommaraju of Chennai, hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and para-athlete Praveen Kumar. National Sports Day is observed on 29 August, the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

💡 Memory Tips /
1. Three Japanese hosts — “To-Hi-Na”
Tokyo 1958, Hiroshima 1994, Nagoya 2026. The syllables also run in date order, so the mnemonic itself gives you the sequence.
2. Glasgow medals — “13-17-9 makes 39”
India’s Glasgow haul reads like a countdown that adds up: 13 gold + 17 silver + 9 bronze = 39 medals, 4th place. Note silver exceeded gold.
3. Spain’s two titles — “2010 and 2026, sixteen apart”
Spain won in 2010 and again in 2026, exactly sixteen years apart, and both times by a single goal in extra time. Torres in the 106th minute; remember 106 as “ten-six”.
4. The Act’s two bodies — “Board regulates, Tribunal adjudicates”
Under the 2025 Act the National Sports BOARD recognises and suspends federations, while the National Sports TRIBUNAL, headed by a Chief Justice, settles disputes. Remember: the Board gives recognition, the Tribunal gives the ruling.
5. Cricket double — “Women first, men followed”
2 November 2025 the women won at Navi Mumbai by 52 runs; 8 March 2026 the men won at Ahmedabad by 96 runs. Woman-November, Man-March: W before M, N before M.
