📖 Detailed Notes /

The Mauryan Empire (322–185 BCE) stands as one of the largest and most powerful empires in ancient Indian history, and a perennial favourite in TNPSC examinations. It was founded by Chandragupta Maurya around 322 BCE, after he overthrew the Nanda dynasty of Magadha with the strategic guidance of his mentor and minister Kautilya — also known as Chanakya or Vishnugupta — the author of the celebrated treatise Arthashastra.

Chandragupta rapidly expanded his territory across northern India and into the northwest. In 305 BCE, he confronted Seleucus Nicator, a general of Alexander the Great who had inherited the eastern part of Alexander’s empire. Chandragupta defeated him, and the resulting treaty granted the Mauryas large territories including parts of modern Afghanistan and Baluchistan, in return for 500 war elephants. As part of this diplomatic arrangement, Seleucus sent Megasthenes as his ambassador to the Mauryan court. Megasthenes’ account, the ‘Indica’, though surviving only in fragments, is an invaluable foreign source on Mauryan administration, society, and the capital city Pataliputra. Towards the end of his life, Chandragupta is believed to have embraced Jainism and abdicated in favour of his son, retiring to Shravanabelagola in Karnataka, where he performed the Jain rite of Sallekhana (fasting unto death).

He was succeeded by his son Bindusara (297–273 BCE), known by the title ‘Amitraghata’ meaning ‘slayer of enemies’. Bindusara maintained friendly relations with the Greek world and extended the empire further into the Deccan. However, it was his son Ashoka (reigned 268–232 BCE) who became the most illustrious of all Mauryan rulers. Early in his reign, Ashoka waged the devastating Kalinga War in 261 BCE. The immense bloodshed — reportedly over 100,000 killed and 150,000 deported — filled him with remorse, marking a turning point in his life. He renounced war (Bherighosha) in favour of moral conquest (Dhammaghosha), embraced Buddhism, and dedicated himself to the propagation of Dhamma, a code of ethical and compassionate living.

Ashoka’s greatest legacy lies in his edicts — inscriptions engraved on rocks, pillars, and cave walls across the subcontinent, mostly in the Prakrit language using the Brahmi script (with Kharoshthi, Greek, and Aramaic used in the northwest). These edicts, deciphered by James Prinsep in 1837, reveal Ashoka’s administrative policies and moral philosophy. He appointed special officers called Dhamma Mahamatras to spread his message, built stupas (including the Great Stupa at Sanchi), and sent Buddhist missionaries abroad — most famously his son Mahendra and daughter Sanghamitra to Sri Lanka. The magnificent Lion Capital at Sarnath, adopted as independent India’s national emblem, dates from an Ashokan pillar.

The Mauryan administration was remarkably centralised. The king was the supreme authority, assisted by a council of ministers, the Mantriparishad (including the Purohit, Mahamantri, Senapati and Yuvaraja). The empire was divided into provinces governed by princes (Kumaras), and further into districts and villages, with a sophisticated bureaucracy handling revenue, justice, and espionage. Kautilya’s Arthashastra, comprising 15 books and 180 chapters, provides detailed guidance on taxation, agriculture, mining, trade, and the use of spies — reflecting a highly organised state. After Ashoka’s death, weak successors, financial strain, and provincial revolts led to decline. The empire ended in 185 BCE when the last ruler, Brihadratha, was assassinated by his commander-in-chief Pushyamitra Sunga, who founded the Sunga dynasty.

(Detailed Notes in Tamil)
