Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav presided over a workshop on mangrove conservation, restoration and sustainable management at Bhuj in Kachchh, Gujarat on 13 September 2026, and reviewed the progress of the MISHTI scheme. Under MISHTI, which runs from 2023 to 2027, 27,652 hectares have been covered against a target of 29,250 hectares, including 12,450 hectares in the Kori Creek region. The Minister released a coffee table book on Kachchh mangroves, a Mangroves Atlas of Gujarat and a Mangrove GIS portal. He noted that the Guneri inland mangroves had been declared Gujarat's first Biodiversity Heritage Site in January 2025, and said mangroves must be conserved as living ecosystems given their importance for coastal biodiversity, fisheries, shoreline protection, climate resilience and livelihoods. Gujarat's Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia also took part.

Dryland Congress 2026, organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, concluded in New Delhi with the adoption of the Delhi Declaration on Drylands, abbreviated 3D. The three-day congress was held on the theme 'Transforming Dryland Agriculture with South-South Cooperation', and the Declaration sets out a shared agenda for transforming dryland agriculture through collaboration, knowledge exchange, innovation and collective action across the Global South. Thirty-four countries were represented, and 170 nominations were received for the ISSCA Global Awards 2026. Those taking part included M. L. Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General of ICAR, and Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT.

A table top exercise under the Colombo Security Conclave concluded at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, as announced on 12 September 2026. The three-day exercise ran from 9 to 11 September 2026 and brought together delegations and maritime security experts from Colombo Security Conclave member states and observer nations. The opening address was delivered by Rear Admiral Manoj Jha, Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at the Eastern Naval Command. The exercise focused on maritime terrorism, narcotics smuggling, human trafficking and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Participants reviewed standard operating procedures, streamlined information sharing and worked to enhance collective maritime domain awareness. The exercise was aligned with MAHASAGAR, India's framework for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

The 18th BRICS Summit was held in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September 2026 under India's chairship, on the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'. The New Delhi Declaration was adopted on 12 September 2026, marking the twentieth anniversary of BRICS cooperation. India's chairship year included, as the Declaration records, over four hundred meetings and engagements across thirty cities in India. The Declaration works through the three traditional pillars of political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people cooperation, and announces a BRICS Integrated Early Warning System for infectious diseases, a BRICS Insurance Resilience Centre, a BRICS Risk Lab at GIFT City in Gujarat, a BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence for Smart Grids and a BRICS Tax Support Network. In his opening remarks the Prime Minister proposed a BRICS Continuity and Implementation Mechanism through the Troika and a BRICS Reform Roadmap of ten proposals built on representation, responsiveness and rule-making.

On 12 September 2026 the Prime Minister met the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. It was President Xi's first visit to India in seven years, their previous meeting having been at Tianjin in August 2025. The Prime Minister framed the relationship through what he called the three mutuals — mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest. Both sides affirmed that peace and tranquility in the border areas remains an essential basis for the relationship and committed themselves to existing agreements and to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question. On economic matters the Indian side raised the structural trade imbalance and supply chain issues, and pressed for meaningful and predictable market access. The Prime Minister also thanked China for its support to India's BRICS chairship.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu virtually inaugurated a new app-cab pick-up point plaza at the Terminal 1 forecourt of Chennai International Airport on Sunday 13 September 2026. Built at a cost of Rs.22.88 crore, the plaza has three lanes of seven metres width each, can hold about 28 vehicles at a time and offers a roofed waiting area for 150 passengers with digital flight display boards. It is designed to handle around 5,000 yellow-board and app taxis a day. The plaza cuts the passenger walk to a cab from about 600 metres at the multi-level car park to roughly 30 metres from the terminal exit; more than half of Terminal 1 passengers use app cabs. Seven operators are authorised to use it. Sameer Kumar Sinha, Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Vipin Kumar, Chairman of the Airports Authority of India, and Raja Kishore, Director of Chennai Airport, took part.

The Southern Zone Bench of the National Green Tribunal barred the immersion of Vinayagar idols at the Pattinapakkam and Neelankarai beaches in Chennai in an order reported on 12 September 2026. The bench comprised Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana as judicial member and Prashant Harghava as expert member. The ground for the order was that both stretches fall within the Coastal Regulation Zone and are sea turtle nesting sites. The petition had been filed in 2023 by a resident of Pudupet in Chennai. The Tribunal directed the Tamil Nadu government to state by 16 September 2026 whether idols could instead be diverted to the other approved immersion points in Chennai at Kasimedu, Thiruvottiyur and Ennore, and ordered public awareness campaigns on the ecological value of these coasts.

Solomon Pappaiah, the Tamil scholar who made the televised Pattimandram debate a popular form, was cremated with full State honours at the Thathaneri electric crematorium in Madurai on 12 September 2026. He died on 11 September 2026 at the age of 90 at his residence in Gnanaolipuram, Madurai, of age-related ailments. Born at Saathangudi near Thirumangalam in Madurai district, he served as Professor of Tamil at the American College in Madurai and became the pioneer and best known moderator of Pattimandram on television. He received the Kalaimamani award of the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2000 and the Padma Shri in 2021. Minister for Energy and Law R. Nirmal Kumar represented the State government at the funeral, and Madurai District Collector Nishant Krishna laid a wreath. The civic body announced that his street would be renamed after him.

The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation announced on 12 September 2026 that an additional 2,000 megawatts had been procured from generating companies and the open market to meet surging demand and to end unscheduled power cuts. Minister for Electricity and Law R. Nirmal Kumar said the shortfall had been caused by abnormally prolonged summer heat, a drop in wind power generation because of low wind speeds, and voltage fluctuations. State peak demand was reported at around 19,000 megawatts. Senior officials were deployed to monitor the grid from headquarters, special teams were placed on standby and scheduled maintenance shutdowns were minimised. Consumers were asked to use the round-the-clock Minnagam complaint line.

The New Delhi Declaration of the 18th BRICS Summit endorsed a BRICS Expert Working Group on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine under the BRICS Health Track, as announced on 13 September 2026. The group is intended as a platform for dialogue, collaboration and exchange among BRICS member states on medicinal plants and herbal preparations, on quality, safety and efficacy through evidence-informed approaches, on universal health coverage and on regulatory frameworks aligned with national contexts. Its terms of reference had been agreed at a BRICS meeting in Chandigarh on 21 July 2026. The announcement referenced the World Health Organization's Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025-2034. Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State with independent charge of the Ministry of Ayush, and Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, were associated with the announcement.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras announced on 13 September 2026 that it had developed an adaptive flexible wing attachment called a morphing skin, which reshapes itself in flight to stop airflow separation, increase lift and reduce drag, and so prevent aircraft stalls. The design is inspired by bird flight and uses macro fibre composite strips for real-time sensing and actuation. The work was led by Rinku Mukherjee, Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering at IIT Madras, with the alumni Antony Samuel B, who built the numerical code, and Aritras Roy, who ran the wind-tunnel experiments. The technology is patented and the findings were published in the European Journal of Mechanics B Fluids. The team tested the attachment on a three-dimensional wing using a NACA 4415 airfoil, after roughly twenty years of development.

India's junior men's and junior women's hockey teams both won the Junior Asia Cup at Moqi in China, and the Prime Minister congratulated both sides on 13 September 2026.
