The 2026 Medicine Prize: Switching Nerve Cells On With Light
On 5 October 2026 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awarded the Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Karl Deisseroth of Stanford University, Peter Hegemann of Humboldt University of Berlin and Georg Nagel of the University of Würzburg, for their discovery of a molecular switch for nerve cells. The work they are honoured for is the foundation of optogenetics, a technique that lets researchers switch individual nerve cells on and off using nothing but light.
The story begins not with the brain but with pond algae. Hegemann and Nagel studied channelrhodopsins — light-sensitive proteins that let green algae sense light and swim towards it. These proteins sit in the cell membrane and open an ion channel the moment light strikes them. Deisseroth’s insight was to take this algal protein and insert its gene into mammalian neurons. A neuron carrying channelrhodopsin fires when a pulse of blue light reaches it, and falls silent when the light stops.
The consequence is a degree of control over the brain that was previously unimaginable. A researcher can now target one particular class of cell, in one particular region, and switch it on during a fraction of a second, then watch what the animal does. This has let neuroscience move from correlation to causation in studies of memory, fear, appetite, addiction, movement and sleep. Optogenetics is also being explored clinically — most notably in attempts to restore partial vision in people with inherited retinal degeneration.
How the Nobel System Works
The prizes come from the will of Alfred Nobel (1833–1896), the Swedish chemist and engineer who invented dynamite and held well over three hundred patents. In the will he signed in 1895, Nobel directed that the bulk of his fortune be invested and the interest distributed annually as prizes to those who had conferred the greatest benefit on humankind, in five fields: physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. The will was contested by his relatives and it took five years to settle, so the first prizes were awarded in 1901.
A sixth award, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, was created in 1968 by Sweden’s central bank on its 300th anniversary and first awarded in 1969. It is not funded from Nobel’s bequest and is not, strictly speaking, a Nobel Prize — a distinction examiners like to test. It is nevertheless announced and presented alongside the others.
Different bodies choose the laureates. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects for Medicine; the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for Physics, Chemistry and Economic Sciences; the Swedish Academy for Literature; and the Norwegian Nobel Committee, appointed by Norway’s parliament, for Peace. Nobel’s choice of Norway for the Peace Prize has never been fully explained, and it is why that prize alone is announced and presented in Oslo while the rest belong to Stockholm.
The Rules That Generate Exam Questions
Three rules are worth memorising. First, a prize may be shared by no more than three people; the Peace Prize is the only one that may also go to an organisation, which is how bodies like the ICRC and the UN agencies have won. Second, since a rule change in 1974 the prize cannot be awarded posthumously: a laureate must be living when the October announcement is made, though an award stands if the recipient dies before the December ceremony. Third, every prize is presented on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel’s death, and the nomination records are sealed for fifty years.
The 2026 prize is worth SEK 12 million per category. Where a prize is shared, that sum is divided — equally among three if the citation treats them alike, or in halves and quarters if the committee distinguishes the contributions. Each laureate also receives a gold medal and a diploma.
India and the Nobel Prize
Six laureates were Indian citizens or residents of India when honoured. Rabindranath Tagore took the 1913 Literature prize for Gitanjali, becoming the first Indian and the first Asian laureate in any category. C. V. Raman won Physics in 1930 for the Raman Effect, the shift in wavelength when light scatters through a medium; he remains the only Indian citizen to have won that prize, and National Science Day on 28 February marks his discovery. Mother Teresa (1979), the 14th Dalai Lama (1989, a Tibetan leader resident in India), Amartya Sen (1998, welfare economics) and Kailash Satyarthi (2014, shared with Malala Yousafzai for child rights) complete the list.
A second group was born in India or is of Indian descent but held foreign citizenship when awarded: Ronald Ross (1902), Rudyard Kipling (1907), Har Gobind Khorana (1968), Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1983, C. V. Raman’s nephew), V. S. Naipaul (2001), Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (2009, born in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu) and Abhijit Banerjee (2019). Note the Tamil Nadu connection in Raman, Chandrasekhar and Ramakrishnan — a detail TNPSC has used more than once.
