📜 The Delhi Sultanate (1206–1526)
The three centuries between 1206 and 1526 are the hinge of medieval Indian history. In that span a succession of Turkish and Afghan rulers governed from Delhi, built a new administrative vocabulary, minted a new currency, raised a new architecture, and seeded a new language. For TNPSC, the Delhi Sultanate is one of the densest scoring areas in Unit on Indian History, because almost every fact in it is a ready-made objective question.
How the Sultanate Began
Turkish power in the Ganga plain rests on one battle. At the Second Battle of Tarain in 1192, Muhammad Ghori defeated Prithviraj Chauhan III and left his slave-general Qutb-ud-din Aibak in charge of the Indian conquests. When Ghori died in 1206, Aibak declared himself independent and the Sultanate was born. Aibak ruled first from Lahore, began the Qutb Minar as a tribute to the Sufi saint Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, and raised the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque at Delhi and the Adhai Din ka Jhonpra at Ajmer. He died in 1210 after falling from his horse while playing chaugan, an early form of polo.
The Slave Dynasty: Iltutmish to Balban
Iltutmish, Aibak’s son-in-law, is the ruler who actually made the Sultanate a state. He moved the capital to Delhi, secured a letter of investiture from the Abbasid Caliph in 1229 which gave his throne legal standing in the wider Islamic world, issued the silver tanka and the copper jital that became the standard coins of medieval India, completed the Qutb Minar, systematised the Iqta — a revenue assignment granted in place of salary — and created an inner circle of forty Turkish nobles known as the Turkan-i-Chihalgani. That same body of forty later became the chief obstacle to royal authority. His daughter Razia, who ruled from 1236 to 1240, remains the only woman to have occupied the Delhi throne. Balban, who seized power in 1266, answered the problem of the nobility with force: he destroyed the Chihalgani, built up a separate military department called the Diwan-i-Arz, surrounded the throne with the Persian court rituals of Sijda (prostration) and Paibos (kissing the Sultan’s feet), and advanced a theory of kingship in which the Sultan was Niyabat-i-Khudai, deputy of God, and Zil-i-Ilahi, the Shadow of God.
The Khiljis and the Peak of Power
Jalaluddin Khilji founded the second dynasty in 1290, but it is his nephew Alauddin Khilji (1296–1316) whom TNPSC asks about most often. Alauddin is the administrator-Sultan. He took the title Sikandar-i-Sani, the Second Alexander. He fixed the prices of grain, cloth, cattle and slaves in four separate controlled markets, policed them through an officer called the Shahna-i-Mandi under the department Diwan-i-Riyasat, and measured land by the Biswa to levy revenue at half the produce. To prevent his commanders from cheating the treasury he introduced Dagh, the branding of cavalry horses with a state mark, and Huliya, a written descriptive roll of every soldier — and he paid his troops in cash, creating what is counted as India’s first standing army. He beat back repeated Mongol invasions, stormed Ranthambore in 1301 and Chittor in 1303, and through his general Malik Kafur pushed into the Deccan and the far south, reaching Devagiri, Warangal, Dwarasamudra and finally Madurai in 1311, where the raid shook the Pandya kingdom. His buildings — the Alai Darwaza, the Siri fort, the Hauz-i-Alai tank — mark the confident phase of Indo-Islamic architecture.
The Tughlaqs: Ambition and Overreach
Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq founded the third dynasty in 1320 and built the fortress city of Tughlaqabad. His son Muhammad bin Tughlaq is the Sultanate’s most discussed ruler precisely because his best ideas failed. In 1327 he shifted the capital to Daulatabad, the old Devagiri, to govern the Deccan better, and then had to shift it back. In 1329–30 he issued token currency in copper and brass, intended to work on the strength of state guarantee alone; forgery destroyed it. He created the Diwan-i-Kohi, a department of agriculture, and raised taxes in the Doab during a famine. The Moroccan traveller Ibn Battuta arrived in his reign, served as Qazi of Delhi, and left the Rehla, one of the best eyewitness accounts of fourteenth-century India. Firoz Shah Tughlaq, who followed in 1351, chose consolidation over conquest: he cut irrigation canals including the Western Yamuna canal, founded Firozabad, Hisar, Fatehabad and Jaunpur, set up the Diwan-i-Khairat for charity and the Diwan-i-Bandagan for slaves, levied jizya as a separate tax, and carried two Ashokan pillars to Delhi — an act of unintentional archaeology for which historians still thank him.
Decline, and the Lodis
Timur’s invasion of 1398 broke Delhi’s prestige and its treasury. The Sayyid dynasty founded by Khizr Khan governed from 1414 to 1451 over a Sultanate reduced nearly to the district around Delhi. Bahlol Lodi then began the first Afghan dynasty in 1451; Sikandar Lodi founded Agra in 1504 and wrote Persian verse under the pen name Gulrukhi; and Ibrahim Lodi lost the First Battle of Panipat to Babur on 21 April 1526. Babur’s field guns and Tulughma tactics ended three hundred and twenty years of Sultanate rule and opened the Mughal age.
Administration, Economy and Legacy
The Sultan was head of state, army and judiciary. Under him the Wazir ran finance through the Diwan-i-Wizarat, the Ariz-i-Mumalik the army through the Diwan-i-Arz, the Diwan-i-Insha handled correspondence, the Diwan-i-Risalat religious and appellate matters, the Sadr-us-Sudur endowments, the Qazi-ul-Quzat justice, and the Barid-i-Mumalik intelligence. Provinces were Iqtas held by a Muqti or Wali; below them came the Shiq, the Pargana with its Amil and Mushrif, and the village with its Muqaddam, Patwari and Chaudhari. The main taxes were Kharaj on land, Zakat on Muslims, Jizya on non-Muslims and Khams, the state’s one-fifth share of war booty. The legacy is larger than the politics: the true arch and the dome entered Indian building; Persian became the language of administration; Hindavi, the ancestor of Urdu, took shape in the bazaars; Amir Khusrau, called Tuti-i-Hind or the Parrot of India, wrote the Khazain-ul-Futuh; Ziauddin Barani wrote the Tarikh-i-Firozshahi and Minhaj-us-Siraj the Tabaqat-i-Nasiri. For Tamil Nadu the sharpest consequence was the breakaway Madurai Sultanate (1335–1378), founded by Jalaluddin Ahsan Khan after revolting against the Tughlaqs and finally destroyed by the Vijayanagara prince Kumara Kampana, whose campaign his wife Gangadevi celebrated in the Sanskrit poem Madhura Vijayam.
