Carbon has atomic number 6 and the electronic configuration 2,4. Because it needs four more electrons to complete its octet, it is tetravalent and forms four covalent bonds. Losing or gaining four electrons would need far too much energy, so carbon always shares.

Catenation is the ability of carbon atoms to link with one another in long chains, branches and rings. Catenation together with tetravalency is why more than ten million carbon compounds are known — more than the compounds of all other elements put together.

Carbon compounds are almost always covalent. They therefore have low melting and boiling points and are poor conductors of electricity, because there are no free ions or electrons to carry charge.

Carbon exists in crystalline allotropes (diamond, graphite, fullerene, graphene, carbon nanotubes) and amorphous forms (coal, charcoal, coke, lamp black). Allotropes are different physical forms of the same element in the same state.

In diamond every carbon atom is sp3 hybridised and bonded tetrahedrally to four other carbons in a rigid three-dimensional network. This makes diamond the hardest natural mineral (Mohs 10) and an electrical insulator, since all its outer electrons are locked in bonds.

In graphite each carbon is sp2 hybridised and bonded to only three others in flat hexagonal layers. The fourth electron is delocalised, so graphite conducts electricity; the layers slide over one another, making it a dry lubricant and the writing core of a pencil.

Tamil Nadu connection: Neyveli in Cuddalore district holds one of India’s largest lignite deposits, an amorphous carbon fuel also called brown coal. NLC India Limited, formed in 1956 and working under the Ministry of Coal, mines it by the opencast method and runs thermal power stations there. The deposit was traced to an accidental artesian-well find in 1934.

📖 Detailed Notes — English
Carbon is the element that organic chemistry is built on, and the reason is simple arithmetic. Its atomic number is 6, so its electrons are arranged 2,4. Four electrons short of a stable octet, carbon would have to gain or lose four electrons to become an ion, and both routes demand far more energy than the atom can supply. It therefore shares instead, forming four covalent bonds. This tetravalency is the first half of the story; the second half is catenation, the unusual ability of carbon atoms to bond to each other in chains, branches and closed rings of almost any length. Taken together these two properties explain why more than ten million carbon compounds have been catalogued, outnumbering the known compounds of every other element combined. Because the bonding is covalent rather than ionic, carbon compounds generally melt and boil at low temperatures and conduct electricity poorly, since no free ions or mobile electrons are available to carry charge.
The same element produces startlingly different materials depending on how the atoms are packed, and these different physical forms are called allotropes. The crystalline allotropes are diamond, graphite, fullerene, graphene and carbon nanotubes; the amorphous forms include coal, charcoal, coke and lamp black. In diamond every carbon is sp3 hybridised and bonded tetrahedrally to four neighbours, producing a rigid three-dimensional lattice in which each outer electron is locked into a bond. That rigidity makes diamond the hardest naturally occurring mineral, a 10 on the Mohs scale and an excellent abrasive, while the absence of mobile electrons makes it an electrical insulator. Graphite is the opposite in almost every respect. Each carbon is sp2 hybridised and bonds to only three neighbours within flat hexagonal sheets, leaving the fourth electron delocalised across the layer. Those free electrons let graphite conduct electricity along its planes, and the weakly held sheets slide over one another, which is why graphite works as a dry lubricant and as the writing core of a pencil. Remembering that both substances are nothing but pure carbon, differing only in arrangement, answers a large share of the questions set on this chapter.
Three newer allotropes complete the picture. Fullerene C60, christened buckminsterfullerene after the architect Buckminster Fuller, was discovered in 1985 by Harold Kroto, Robert Curl and Richard Smalley, who shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it. The molecule is a closed cage shaped like a truncated icosahedron, built from twenty hexagonal and twelve pentagonal faces, which is exactly the stitching pattern of a football. Graphene is a single sheet of graphite one atom thick; Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov isolated it and received the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. Roll a graphene sheet into a cylinder and the result is a carbon nanotube, remarkable for its tensile strength and its ability to conduct heat. These three are favourites with examiners because each carries a datable discovery and a named prize.
Compounds of carbon and hydrogen alone are hydrocarbons, and they divide neatly by the kind of bond they contain. Alkanes are saturated, carrying only single bonds, with the general formula CnH2n+2; methane CH4 and ethane C2H6 are the first two. Alkenes contain one carbon-to-carbon double bond and follow CnH2n, beginning with ethene C2H4. Alkynes contain a triple bond and follow CnH2n−2, beginning with ethyne C2H2, the gas sold as acetylene whose oxygen flame cuts and welds steel. Saturated hydrocarbons burn with a clean blue flame, whereas unsaturated ones burn with a yellow sooty flame because the higher proportion of carbon does not oxidise completely — a distinction worth memorising.
Organic compounds are organised into homologous series. Within a series, consecutive members differ by a single −CH2− unit, a mass difference of 14 units, and all members carry the same functional group. The consequence is that chemical properties stay essentially constant down a series while physical properties such as boiling point and density change smoothly with chain length, so knowing one member lets you predict the rest. The functional group itself is the reactive site: −OH makes an alcohol, −CHO an aldehyde, >C=O a ketone, −COOH a carboxylic acid, and a halogen atom makes a haloalkane. Naming combines the carbon count with the group suffix, so three carbons plus −OH gives propanol and two carbons plus −COOH gives ethanoic acid.
Two compounds appear in examinations more often than all the others. Ethanol, C2H5OH, is the alcohol of alcoholic drinks, a widely used antiseptic and an increasingly common fuel additive; it is a liquid at room temperature and is neutral to litmus. Ethanoic acid, CH3COOH, is familiar as vinegar when diluted to between five and eight per cent. In its pure state it freezes at about 16.6°C, so in a cool laboratory it solidifies into ice-like crystals, and from that appearance it takes the name glacial acetic acid. Heating a carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of a little concentrated sulphuric acid gives an ester, a sweet-smelling liquid used in perfumes and artificial flavours. Running the reaction in reverse by boiling an ester or a natural fat with sodium hydroxide is called saponification, and it produces soap along with glycerol.
That last reaction leads straight into the chemistry of cleaning. Soaps are the sodium or potassium salts of long-chain fatty acids. Every soap molecule has two ends: a long hydrocarbon tail that dissolves in oil and an ionic head that dissolves in water. Dropped into greasy water, the molecules arrange themselves into spherical clusters called micelles, tails buried in the oil droplet and heads facing outward, so the grease is lifted away and rinsed off. Soap has one well-known weakness. In hard water, which is rich in calcium and magnesium ions, it reacts to form an insoluble precipitate called scum, wasting the soap and leaving deposits on cloth. Detergents solve this: being ammonium or sulphonate salts, their calcium and magnesium compounds stay soluble, so they lather and clean even in hard water.
Two simple oxides of carbon deserve separate attention. Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, which is exactly what makes it dangerous, and it binds to haemoglobin far more strongly than oxygen, blocking the blood from carrying oxygen. It forms wherever carbon fuels burn with an inadequate air supply. Carbon dioxide, formed in complete combustion and in respiration, is the gas plants use in photosynthesis and the best known greenhouse gas. Cooled and compressed it becomes solid dry ice, which sublimes directly from solid to gas without wetting anything, and is therefore used to keep food and medicines cold and to produce stage fog.
Tamil Nadu supplies the regional anchor for this chapter. Neyveli, in Cuddalore district, sits on one of India’s largest deposits of lignite, the soft brown coal that is an amorphous form of carbon. The deposit was traced to an accident in 1934, when a brown substance came up with the water from an artesian well on a local farm; surveys that followed revealed reserves running to around two thousand million tonnes. NLC India Limited was formed in 1956 to work them and today mines lignite by the opencast method and runs thermal power stations on the site, operating as a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Coal. Candidates should be able to place Neyveli in Cuddalore district and link it to lignite rather than to anthracite or bituminous coal.
