Three types of radiation are emitted: alpha (a helium nucleus, charge +2, mass 4u), beta (a fast-moving electron, charge −1) and gamma (electromagnetic radiation with no charge and no mass). Gamma rays were identified by Paul Villard in 1900.

Penetrating power follows the order gamma > beta > alpha, while ionising power is exactly the reverse: alpha > beta > gamma. Alpha rays are stopped by a sheet of paper, beta rays by a few millimetres of aluminium, and gamma rays need thick lead or concrete.

Nuclear fission was discovered by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in 1938 and explained theoretically by Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch. When uranium-235 absorbs a slow neutron it splits into lighter nuclei, releasing about 200 MeV of energy per fission along with 2 to 3 fresh neutrons.

Nuclear fusion powers the Sun through the proton–proton cycle and requires temperatures of the order of 107 kelvin. Per kilogram of fuel, fusion releases far more energy than fission and leaves no long-lived radioactive waste. ITER in France is the international fusion project, and India is one of its seven partners.

Einstein’s mass–energy relation E = mc2 explains nuclear energy: the mass defect of a nucleus appears as its binding energy. Binding energy per nucleon is highest for iron-56 (about 8.8 MeV), which makes it the most stable nucleus in nature.

India’s three-stage nuclear programme was designed by Homi J. Bhabha: Stage 1 uses natural uranium in pressurised heavy water reactors, Stage 2 uses fast breeder reactors that breed plutonium-239 from uranium-238, and Stage 3 converts thorium-232 into uranium-233. India holds one of the world’s largest thorium reserves, in monazite-rich coastal beach sands.

Radioactivity is the spontaneous disintegration of an unstable atomic nucleus, during which it emits particles or electromagnetic radiation and transforms into a different nucleus. Henri Becquerel stumbled on the phenomenon in 1896: a photographic plate wrapped in black paper was fogged by a uranium salt placed near it, even though no sunlight had reached the plate. Two years later Marie and Pierre Curie isolated two far more active elements from pitchblende, naming them polonium (after Marie’s homeland Poland) and radium. The crucial insight for examinations is that radioactivity is a nuclear property, not a chemical one — it cannot be switched off by heating, cooling, compressing or chemically combining the element.
Ernest Rutherford separated the emissions into alpha and beta components using a magnetic field, and Paul Villard identified the third, uncharged component as gamma radiation in 1900. An alpha particle is a helium nucleus: two protons and two neutrons, charge +2, mass 4u. Because it is heavy and doubly charged it collides violently with the atoms it passes, so it ionises strongly but travels only a few centimetres in air and is stopped by a sheet of paper or the outer layer of skin. A beta particle is an electron thrown out when a neutron inside the nucleus converts into a proton; it is lighter and faster, penetrating a few millimetres of aluminium. Gamma radiation carries no charge and no rest mass, travels at the speed of light, and needs several centimetres of lead or thick concrete to attenuate it. Remember the two reversed ladders: penetration rises from alpha to gamma, while ionisation falls in the same direction.
The bookkeeping of decay is simple and heavily tested. In alpha decay the parent loses 4 from its mass number and 2 from its atomic number, so uranium-238 becomes thorium-234. In beta decay a neutron becomes a proton, so the atomic number rises by one while the mass number stays put: carbon-14 becomes nitrogen-14. Gamma emission is the nucleus shedding surplus energy only, leaving both numbers untouched. Statistically, decay follows N = N0e−λt, where λ is the decay constant. The half-life, the time for half the nuclei present to decay, is T1/2 = 0.693/λ. Half-life is a fixed fingerprint of each isotope: uranium-238 takes 4.5 billion years, carbon-14 takes 5,730 years, and some artificial isotopes last fractions of a second. After n half-lives the undecayed fraction is one over two to the power n, so three half-lives leave one-eighth of the original sample.
Activity is counted in becquerel, one disintegration per second, with the older curie equal to 3.7 × 1010 becquerel. Biological effect needs two further units: the gray measures energy absorbed per kilogram of tissue, and the sievert weights that dose by how damaging the particular radiation is. A Geiger–Müller counter detects individual ionising events, while photographic film badges record cumulative exposure for workers.
Nuclear fission, found by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in 1938 and interpreted by Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch, is the splitting of a heavy nucleus into two comparable fragments. A slow neutron absorbed by uranium-235 produces an unstable nucleus that breaks apart into fragments such as barium and krypton, releasing roughly 200 MeV together with two or three neutrons. Those neutrons can trigger further fissions, and once the sample exceeds its critical mass the reaction sustains itself. A power reactor keeps that chain reaction just barely self-sustaining using a moderator of heavy water or graphite to slow neutrons to useful speeds, control rods of cadmium or boron to swallow the surplus, and a coolant to carry heat to the steam turbine. Enrico Fermi assembled the first such pile at Chicago in 1942.
Fusion is the opposite process: light nuclei merge into a heavier one, and the small mass lost reappears as energy through E = mc2. The Sun runs the proton–proton cycle, fusing hydrogen into helium at temperatures of about ten million kelvin, which is why fusion is also called a thermonuclear reaction. Weight for weight, fusion releases more energy than fission and produces no long-lived radioactive waste, but confining a plasma at such temperatures remains unsolved for commercial power. India is one of the seven partners in the ITER tokamak being built in France. The reason both processes release energy at all is the binding-energy curve: binding energy per nucleon peaks near iron-56 at about 8.8 MeV, so heavy nuclei gain stability by splitting and light nuclei gain it by fusing.
India’s programme, drawn up by Homi J. Bhabha, is built around the country’s modest uranium and abundant thorium. Stage one burns natural uranium in pressurised heavy water reactors and stockpiles the plutonium in the spent fuel. Stage two feeds that plutonium into fast breeder reactors that generate electricity while breeding more plutonium-239 from a uranium-238 blanket. Stage three replaces the blanket with thorium-232, which captures neutrons and becomes fissile uranium-233, unlocking the monazite sands of the southern coast. The Atomic Energy Commission dates from 1948 and the Department of Atomic Energy from 1954; Apsara at Trombay, commissioned in 1956, was the first research reactor in Asia, and Tarapur became India’s first nuclear power station in 1969.
Tamil Nadu carries the second stage. The Madras Atomic Power Station at Kalpakkam, with two 220 MW pressurised heavy water reactors, was the first nuclear power station designed and built wholly within India. The same site hosts the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, which designed the 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, and BHAVINI, which operates it. The PFBR is cooled by liquid sodium rather than water and burns uranium–plutonium mixed oxide fuel; it attained first criticality on 6 April 2026, a long-awaited entry into stage two. Further south, Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district operates Russian-designed VVER reactors of 1,000 MW each, the largest single units in the country. As of February 2026 India ran 24 reactors totalling 8,180 MWe under NPCIL, the public company set up in 1987.
Finally, radioisotopes matter far beyond power. Cobalt-60 gamma sources treat tumours and sterilise surgical supplies; iodine-131 diagnoses and treats thyroid disease because the thyroid concentrates iodine; phosphorus-32 traces fertiliser uptake in crops; sodium-24 follows blood circulation and locates blockages; carbon-14 dates organic remains up to about fifty thousand years old; and the uranium-lead clock dates rocks over billions of years. Gamma irradiation also extends the shelf life of onions, potatoes and spices without leaving residue.
