⚗ Chemical Bonding & Molecular Structure

🇱 Key Points /
1
A chemical bond is the force of attraction that holds two or more atoms together in a molecule. Atoms combine in order to lose energy and acquire the stable electron arrangement of the nearest noble gas — this is the basis of the Kossel–Lewis octet rule proposed in 1916.
2
An ionic (electrovalent) bond is formed by the complete transfer of one or more electrons from a metal atom to a non-metal atom. Sodium chloride, magnesium oxide and calcium chloride are classic examples.
3
A covalent bond is formed by the mutual sharing of electron pairs between atoms of identical or comparable electronegativity. Sharing one pair gives a single bond, two pairs a double bond and three pairs a triple bond.
4
In a coordinate or dative bond the shared electron pair is contributed entirely by one atom — the donor — while the other atom, the acceptor, merely provides an empty orbital. It is represented by an arrow pointing from donor to acceptor. The ammonium ion, the hydronium ion and the BF3·NH3 adduct are the standard examples.
5
Fluorine is the most electronegative element, with a Pauling value of 4.0. As a working rule, an electronegativity difference greater than about 1.7 between two atoms gives a predominantly ionic bond, while a smaller difference gives a polar covalent bond.
6
Lattice energy is the energy released when one mole of an ionic solid is formed from its gaseous ions. For sodium chloride it is about 788 kJ per mole. Smaller ions and higher ionic charges raise the lattice energy, which in turn raises the melting point and hardness of the crystal.
7
Fajans’ rules state that covalent character in an ionic compound increases when the cation is small, the anion is large, and the charge on either ion is high. This is why lithium chloride is more covalent than sodium chloride and dissolves in organic solvents.
8
A sigma bond is formed by head-on or axial overlap of orbitals and is the stronger of the two; a pi bond arises from sideways or lateral overlap and is weaker. The nitrogen molecule has one sigma and two pi bonds, a bond order of three and a bond energy of about 941 kJ per mole, which explains why nitrogen gas is so unreactive.
9
VSEPR theory holds that electron pairs around a central atom arrange themselves to keep repulsion at a minimum, and that the order of repulsion is lone pair–lone pair, then lone pair–bond pair, then bond pair–bond pair. This single idea explains the bond angles of methane at 109 degrees 28 minutes, ammonia at 107 degrees and water at 104.5 degrees.
10
Hybridisation decides molecular shape: sp gives a linear molecule with a 180 degree angle, sp2 a trigonal planar shape at 120 degrees, sp3 a tetrahedron at 109.5 degrees, sp3d a trigonal bipyramid and sp3d2 an octahedron with 90 degree angles.
11
Carbon dioxide and boron trifluoride contain polar bonds yet have zero dipole moment, because their symmetric shapes cancel the individual bond moments. Water, being bent, has a dipole moment of 1.85 D and ammonia, being pyramidal, has 1.47 D.
12
A hydrogen bond, at roughly 10 to 40 kJ per mole, is far weaker than a covalent bond yet decides much of everyday chemistry: the unusually high boiling point of water, the floating of ice, the twin strands of DNA and the ready solubility of sugars and alcohols in water.
13
Ice floats because hydrogen bonding forces water molecules into an open cage-like lattice on freezing, giving ice a density of about 0.92 g per cubic centimetre against 1.00 for liquid water. Lakes therefore freeze from the top down and aquatic life survives the winter.
14
A metallic bond is the attraction between a lattice of positive metal ions and a sea of delocalised valence electrons. This mobile electron sea accounts for the electrical and thermal conductivity, malleability, ductility and lustre of metals.
15
The octet rule has well-known exceptions: beryllium chloride and boron trifluoride have incomplete octets, phosphorus pentachloride and sulphur hexafluoride have expanded octets, and nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide are odd-electron molecules. In giant covalent solids diamond is sp3 hybridised and the hardest natural substance, while graphite is sp2 hybridised and conducts electricity because its fourth valence electron is delocalised.
📖 Detailed Notes in English

Every chemical change in the world around us — rusting iron, the burning of cooking gas, the setting of cement, the digestion of food — is at heart the breaking of old bonds and the making of new ones. A chemical bond is simply the force of attraction that holds atoms together in a molecule or a crystal. Atoms do not bond out of preference but out of necessity: an isolated atom with an incomplete outermost shell is at a higher energy, and bonding lets it shed that excess energy and settle into the stable electron arrangement of the nearest noble gas. Walther Kossel and Gilbert Lewis put this idea on a firm footing in 1916 as the octet rule, which says that atoms tend to gain, lose or share electrons until eight electrons occupy the valence shell. Hydrogen, lithium and beryllium work towards two electrons instead, the duplet.

The first great family of bonds is the ionic or electrovalent bond, formed when electrons pass completely from one atom to another. A sodium atom, carrying a single loosely held electron in its third shell, surrenders it to a chlorine atom that is one electron short of a full octet. What remains are a sodium cation and a chloride anion, and the electrostatic pull between these opposite charges is the bond. Crucially, no sodium chloride molecule exists as such: in the rock-salt crystal each sodium ion is surrounded by six chloride ions and each chloride by six sodium ions, a six-to-six coordination repeated endlessly through the lattice. The energy released when one mole of this lattice forms from its gaseous ions — about 788 kilojoules for sodium chloride — is the lattice energy, and it governs the properties aspirants are asked about most. Because so much energy is stored in the lattice, ionic solids are hard, brittle and high-melting; because the ions are locked in place they do not conduct electricity as solids, but once melted or dissolved the freed ions carry current readily. Being charged, they dissolve well in polar solvents such as water and hardly at all in petrol or benzene.

The second family is the covalent bond, in which neither atom can win the tug-of-war and the two settle for sharing. When two atoms of comparable electronegativity approach, each contributes one electron to a shared pair that belongs to both nuclei. One shared pair makes a single bond as in hydrogen or chlorine, two pairs a double bond as in oxygen or ethene, three pairs a triple bond as in nitrogen or ethyne. Where the two partners differ in electronegativity the shared pair sits closer to the greedier atom, and the bond becomes polar — hydrogen chloride is the standard example. A useful working rule places the dividing line at an electronegativity difference of about 1.7: above it the bond is predominantly ionic, below it polar covalent. Fluorine, at 4.0 on the Pauling scale, is the most electronegative element of all. Covalent compounds are typically soft, volatile and poor conductors, since there are no free ions or electrons to move. The famous exceptions are the giant network solids — diamond, graphite and silica — where covalent bonding extends through the whole crystal and produces extreme hardness and very high melting points.

A third and more subtle variety is the coordinate or dative bond, which looks like a covalent bond once formed but has a different ancestry: the shared pair comes entirely from one atom. Ammonia has a lone pair on nitrogen; a hydrogen ion has an empty orbital and no electron to offer. When they meet, nitrogen donates the whole pair and the ammonium ion is born, its fourth bond indistinguishable from the other three in length and strength. The same logic produces the hydronium ion from water and a proton, and the adduct between boron trifluoride and ammonia, where electron-deficient boron accepts nitrogen’s lone pair. Examiners return to this bond constantly because it tests whether a candidate understands the origin of electrons rather than merely counting them.

Shape matters as much as bond type, and here VSEPR theory — valence shell electron pair repulsion — does the explaining. Its premise is that electron pairs around a central atom, bonded or lone, repel one another and arrange themselves as far apart as geometry allows. Lone pairs, held by one nucleus only, spread wider and repel more strongly, giving the repulsion order lone pair–lone pair, then lone pair–bond pair, then bond pair–bond pair. Methane, with four bond pairs and no lone pairs, is a perfect tetrahedron at 109 degrees 28 minutes. Replace one bond pair with a lone pair and ammonia becomes trigonal pyramidal at 107 degrees; replace two and water bends to 104.5 degrees. The same framework, expressed through hybridisation, predicts that sp orbitals give a linear molecule at 180 degrees, sp2 a trigonal plane at 120 degrees, sp3 a tetrahedron, sp3d a trigonal bipyramid and sp3d2 an octahedron. Shape in turn decides polarity: carbon dioxide and boron trifluoride hold polar bonds yet show zero dipole moment because their symmetry cancels the individual moments, while bent water registers 1.85 D and pyramidal ammonia 1.47 D.

Beyond the strong bonds lie the weak forces that quietly run the natural world. A hydrogen bond, worth only ten to forty kilojoules per mole against four hundred or more for a covalent bond, forms when hydrogen already attached to a small electronegative atom such as fluorine, oxygen or nitrogen is drawn towards a lone pair on a neighbouring molecule. Feeble individually, these bonds act in vast numbers: they lift the boiling point of water far above that of hydrogen sulphide, hold the two strands of DNA in their double helix, dissolve sugars and alcohols in water, and, on freezing, force water molecules into an open cage that makes ice less dense than the liquid at about 0.92 grams per cubic centimetre. That single anomaly is why lakes freeze downwards from the surface and fish survive the winter beneath. The metallic bond completes the picture: a lattice of positive metal ions bathed in a sea of delocalised valence electrons, free to drift and therefore to carry heat and current, to slide past one another when the metal is hammered into sheets or drawn into wire, and to reflect light as lustre. Finally, the octet rule itself admits exceptions worth memorising — incomplete octets in beryllium chloride and boron trifluoride, expanded octets in phosphorus pentachloride and sulphur hexafluoride, and odd-electron molecules such as nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide.

✅ Answers with Explanations /
Q1 — Answer (B)
In NH4+ the nitrogen atom donates its lone pair to a proton, which brings no electron of its own — the classic donor-acceptor or dative bond.
Q2 — Answer (C)
Water is sp3 hybridised but carries two lone pairs on oxygen. Their stronger repulsion squeezes the tetrahedral angle of 109.5 degrees down to 104.5 degrees.
Q3 — Answer (D)
Carbon dioxide is linear and symmetric, so the two equal and opposite C=O bond moments cancel exactly, even though each bond is polar.
Q4 — Answer (B)
A small, highly charged cation polarises a large anion strongly, pulling its electron cloud towards itself and giving the bond covalent character — the reason lithium chloride is more covalent than sodium chloride.
Q5 — Answer (C)
Each carbon in graphite is sp2 hybridised and uses only three electrons in sigma bonds; the fourth is delocalised over the layer and free to carry current. In diamond all four are locked in sp3 sigma bonds.
💡 Memory Tips /
LEO the lion says GER — Loss of Electrons is Oxidation, Gain of Electrons is Reduction. Use it to spot which atom becomes the cation in an ionic bond: the one that loses.
LEO the lion says GER —
Bond angle ladder 109-107-104 — methane, ammonia, water. Each lone pair added to the central atom knocks roughly 2.5 degrees off the angle. Count the lone pairs, subtract the steps.
LLL — Lone pairs Love Lots of room — the repulsion order lone pair–lone pair, then lone pair–bond pair, then bond pair–bond pair. Three L’s first, then two, then one.
Small cation, Big anion = Strong covalent for Fajans’ rules. Remember it as SBS — and recall that lithium, the smallest alkali cation, gives the most covalent halide.
Ice floats on FOUR letters: OPEN — hydrogen bonds build an OPEN cage, so ice is less dense than water. If a question asks why aquatic life survives winter, the answer is always hydrogen bonding.
🔗 Previous Year Question Pattern /

Questions on this theme recur in the General Science section of TNPSC Group 1, 2, 2A and 4 papers. The three below reflect the pattern most often seen.

1. Name the type of bond present in the ammonium ion, and state which atom acts as the electron-pair donor.
Answer: A coordinate (dative) covalent bond, in which the nitrogen atom donates its lone pair.

2. Why is the boiling point of water much higher than that of hydrogen sulphide, although both are group 16 hydrides?
Answer: Oxygen is small and highly electronegative, so water forms strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds; sulphur is larger and less electronegative, so hydrogen sulphide does not.

3. Ionic compounds conduct electricity in the molten state but not in the solid state. Give the reason.
Answer: In the solid the ions are locked in fixed lattice positions; on melting the lattice breaks down and the ions become free to move and carry charge.
