🏺 Indus Valley (Harappan) Civilisation |
The Indus Valley Civilisation (IVC) is the earliest urban, Bronze Age civilisation of the Indian subcontinent. Its Mature (Harappan) phase is dated c. 2600–1900 BCE.
Harappa was excavated first, in 1921, by Daya Ram Sahni — hence the alternative name ‘Harappan Civilisation’.
Mohenjo-daro was discovered in 1922 by R. D. Banerji. Sir John Marshall, Director-General of the ASI, announced the discovery to the world in 1924.
More than 1,400 Harappan sites have been identified across India, Pakistan and Afghanistan; the majority lie in present-day India.
Rakhigarhi (Hisar district, Haryana) is the largest Harappan site in India by area. Mohenjo-daro is the largest and best-planned city overall.
Town planning followed the grid (chessboard) pattern — streets crossing at right angles, a raised Citadel to the west and a Lower Town to the east.
Burnt bricks were used on a large scale, especially for drains and wells. The covered underground drainage system is the civilisation’s most distinctive feature. Stone buildings are absent.
The Great Bath (Mohenjo-daro) is the largest public structure; the Great Granary at Harappa and Mohenjo-daro shows organised food storage.
Lothal (Gujarat), excavated by S. R. Rao, has the world’s earliest known artificial dockyard — the port of the Harappans.
Dholavira (Gujarat), excavated by R. S. Bisht, is famous for giant water reservoirs, a three-part city division and a 10-sign ‘signboard’. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.
Kalibangan (Rajasthan) gave the earliest ploughed agricultural field and fire altars; Chanhudaro (Sindh) was a bead-making centre and the only major city without a citadel.
Weights were cubical and highly standardised, rising in the ratio 1 : 2 : 4 : 8 : 16 : 32; the commonest weight is about 13.7 grams. The number 16 was the base of the system.
The Indus script is pictographic, written boustrophedon (right to left in the first line, then left to right) and remains undeciphered.
Graffiti marks found at Keeladi, Kodumanal and Adichanallur in Tamil Nadu resemble Indus signs, and researchers are examining a possible cultural continuum with South India.
Discovery and Chronology
For most of the nineteenth century the history of India was believed to begin with the Vedic Aryans. That belief collapsed in the 1920s. Railway engineers laying track in Punjab had for decades been carting away neatly baked bricks from a mound called Harappa without realising what they were destroying. In 1921 Daya Ram Sahni, working for the Archaeological Survey of India, excavated the mound scientifically. A year later, in 1922, R. D. Banerji uncovered a second and even larger city at Mohenjo-daro (“Mound of the Dead”) on the Indus in Sindh. In 1924 Sir John Marshall, then Director-General of the ASI, announced to the world that a hitherto unknown Bronze Age civilisation, contemporary with Egypt and Mesopotamia, had been found in the Indus basin. Archaeologists divide it into three phases: Early Harappan (c. 3300–2600 BCE), Mature Harappan (c. 2600–1900 BCE) and Late Harappan (c. 1900–1300 BCE). For TNPSC purposes the mature urban phase, 2600–1900 BCE, is the period most often asked about.
Extent and Major Sites
The civilisation covered roughly 1.3 million square kilometres — larger in area than contemporary Egypt and Mesopotamia combined — stretching from Sutkagendor on the Makran coast in the west to Alamgirpur on the Hindon in the east, and from Manda in Jammu in the north to Daimabad in Maharashtra in the south. Over 1,400 sites are known, most of them now in Indian territory. Harappa on the Ravi is remembered for its granaries and its cemetery R-37 coffin burials. Mohenjo-daro on the Indus yielded the Great Bath, the bronze Dancing Girl, the steatite Bearded Priest and the famous Pashupati seal. Lothal in Gujarat, excavated by S. R. Rao, preserves what is generally accepted as the world’s earliest artificial dockyard, connecting the Harappans to the sea trade of the Arabian Gulf. Dholavira in the Rann of Kachchh, excavated by R. S. Bisht and inscribed by UNESCO in 2021, is remarkable for its three-fold division into citadel, middle town and lower town, its enormous rock-cut water reservoirs and a ten-sign inscription that may be the world’s oldest signboard. Kalibangan in Rajasthan produced the earliest known ploughed field and a row of fire altars, while Chanhudaro in Sindh was an industrial town of bead-makers and the only significant Harappan city with no citadel.
Town Planning, Economy and Society
What impresses every student of the Harappans is their sense of order. Cities were laid out on a grid, main streets running north–south and east–west and crossing at right angles. Houses of standardised burnt brick opened on to side lanes rather than the main road, each with a bathroom and a covered drain feeding into a brick-lined municipal sewer with manholes for cleaning — a public health arrangement unmatched anywhere in the ancient world. The economy rested on wheat, barley, peas, sesame and, most famously, cotton: the Harappans were the first people in the world to cultivate cotton, which the later Greeks called Sindon after Sind. Trade with Mesopotamia is documented in cuneiform records that speak of ships from Meluha, generally identified with the Indus region. Standardised cubical chert weights in the ratio 1:2:4:8:16:32, with 13.7 grams as the commonest unit, show a state-supervised commercial system. Society appears to have been remarkably egalitarian: there are no royal tombs, no pyramids and no temples. Religion centred on a Mother Goddess, a proto-Shiva figure seated in yogic posture on the Pashupati seal, the pipal tree, the humped bull and, apparently, ritual bathing.
Decline of the Civilisation
No single explanation for the collapse commands agreement. Sir Mortimer Wheeler’s dramatic “Aryan invasion” theory, based on unburied skeletons at Mohenjo-daro, is now largely discarded; scholars today speak of gradual Indo-Aryan migration blending with a society already in decline. The strongest modern evidence is environmental. From about 1900 BCE the monsoon weakened, the climate turned cooler and drier, and tectonic movement appears to have diverted the Ghaggar–Hakra river system, drying up the settlements along its banks. Repeated flooding at Mohenjo-daro, deforestation caused by the enormous fuel demand of brick kilns, salinity of the soil, the breakdown of long-distance trade with Mesopotamia and possibly epidemic disease all contributed. The cities were not destroyed overnight but de-urbanised: people dispersed eastwards towards the Ganga–Yamuna doab, and the material culture survived in a simpler, rural form through the Late Harappan phase.
