National Income of India — GDP, GNP, NNP, Estimation Methods & the New 2022–23 Base Year Series
National income is the single most important aggregate in macroeconomics. It is the money value of all final goods and services produced by the normal residents of a country during one accounting year, counted only once so that intermediate goods are not double-counted. In official Indian practice the term National Income is reserved for Net National Product at factor cost, although newspapers and the exam syllabus use GDP as the everyday shorthand.
1. The chain of aggregates
The national accounts build upwards from a single firm to the whole economy. For one producer, value added = value of output − value of intermediate consumption. Adding value added across every farm, factory and office located inside the country’s domestic territory gives Gross Domestic Product. Because Indian workers earn abroad and foreign firms earn in India, we add Net Factor Income from Abroad to reach Gross National Product. Machinery wears out while producing, so subtracting depreciation (consumption of fixed capital) converts a gross figure into a net one, giving Net National Product. Finally, market prices contain indirect taxes and are reduced by subsidies, so subtracting net indirect taxes moves us from market price to factor cost. The result, NNP at factor cost, is India’s national income. Dividing it by the mid-year population gives per capita income. An important caution for the examination: gross always means before depreciation, net after; domestic refers to a territory, national to residents.
2. The three estimation methods
The production or value-added method sums value added by the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors and is used in India for agriculture, mining, manufacturing and registered industry. The income method adds up rent, wages and salaries, interest, profit and the mixed income of the self-employed; India relies on it for trade, transport, banking and public administration. The expenditure method adds final spending: GDP = C + I + G + (X − M), where C is private final consumption expenditure, I is gross capital formation, G is government final consumption expenditure and X − M is net exports. India uses a mixed approach, applying whichever method the available data best support in each sector, which is why the production-side and expenditure-side totals used to differ by a discrepancy item.
3. Real, nominal and GVA
Income measured at the prices actually ruling in the year is nominal; measured at the prices of a fixed base year it is real. Only real growth tells us whether output has genuinely risen. The ratio between the two, the GDP deflator, is the broadest inflation index available because it covers every good and service in the economy, unlike the CPI or WPI which cover fixed baskets. Since the 2015 revision India reports sectoral performance through Gross Value Added at basic prices, and converts it to GDP by adding product taxes and deducting product subsidies.
4. The new 2022–23 base year series
A base year should be a normal year — free of drought, flood, war or pandemic — and should be refreshed every five to ten years so that new industries enter the basket and obsolete ones leave it. India’s base year has now moved from 2011–12 to 2022–23, the eighth such revision, with the new series released on 27 February 2026. The exercise was steered by the Advisory Committee on National Accounts Statistics (ACNAS) under Prof. Biswanath Goldar, set up in June 2024 with twenty-six members and five sub-committees covering new data sources, methodological improvement, constant-price estimates, regional accounts and the SNA 2025 update. Administrative databases now feed the accounts directly: GST returns, the Public Financial Management System, e-VAHAN vehicle registrations, MCA-21 corporate filings, RBI and NABARD data, together with the ASUSE and PLFS surveys for the household sector and HCES for consumption. Methodologically, benchmarking shifted from the pro-rata method to Proportional Denton, a Supply-Use Table framework was integrated to narrow the production–expenditure gap, and long-demanded double deflation was introduced for manufacturing. The IIP base year also moved to 2022–23 and the CPI base year to 2023–24. A full Sources and Methods volume and the revised back series are to follow.
5. Where India stands and what the measure misses
On the new series, real GDP in 2023–24 grew 7.2% and in 2024–25 grew 7.1%. The Provisional Estimates for 2025–26, released on 29 May 2026, place real GDP at Rs. 323.12 lakh crore with growth of 7.7%, and nominal GDP at Rs. 346.36 lakh crore with growth of 8.9%; real GVA grew 7.9%. Manufacturing expanded 10.7% and the trade, hotels, transport and communication group 11%, while agriculture and allied activities grew a modest 3%. Per capita net national income reached Rs. 2,08,090 at current prices. Yet the measure remains incomplete: unpaid household work and the vast unorganised sector are hard to capture, non-monetised subsistence output escapes the net, the black economy is excluded, illiteracy and poor record-keeping weaken the data, and environmental damage is counted as income rather than loss. This is why Green GDP, the Human Development Index and multidimensional poverty measures are used alongside national income rather than in place of it.
செலவின முறை இறுதிச் செலவுகளைக் கூட்டுகிறது: GDP = C + I + G + (X − M).
