Tamil Bhakti Literature — Thirumurai, Thevaram & Nalayira Divya Prabandham
| 1 |
Tamil Bhakti literature flowered roughly between the 6th and 9th centuries CE in two great streams — the Saiva Nayanmars and the Vaishnava Alvars. This age is called the Bhakti Age or the age of the Pallava–Pandya revival of Hinduism.

The Saiva canon is the Panniru Thirumurai (Twelve Thirumurai) — about 18,000 verses in all. The first seven books together are known as Thevaram.

| 3 |
Thevaram authors: Thirugnana Sambandar (Thirumurai 1–3), Appar / Thirunavukkarasar (4–6) and Sundarar (7). These three are the Thevara Moovar.
|
| 4 |
With Manikkavasagar these four are the Samaya Kuravargal (the four Saiva religious preceptors). Sambandar is called Thirugnana Sambandar; Appar bore the title Vagisar.

The Thirumurai was collected and arranged by Nambiyandar Nambi at Chidambaram during the reign of Rajaraja Chola I (985–1013 CE), who therefore earned the title “Thirumurai Kanda Cholan”.

Eighth Thirumurai = Thiruvasagam and Thirukkovaiyar by Manikkavasagar, who was a minister of the Pandya king Varaguna before renouncing office. The proverb runs: “He who does not melt at Thiruvasagam will melt at no word.”
|
| 7 |
Ninth Thirumurai = Thiruvisaippa and Thiruppallandu, composed by nine poets including the Chola king Gandaraditya and Karuvur Thevar — the musical Thirumurai.
|
| 8 |
Tenth Thirumurai = Thirumandiram by Thirumoolar, about 3,000 verses in nine thandirams — the earliest systematic text of Saiva Siddhanta. Its famous line: “Onre kulam, oruvane devan” (One is the clan, one alone is God).

Eleventh Thirumurai is a Prabandham collection of twelve poets, including Karaikkal Ammaiyar — the earliest woman poet of the Tamil Bhakti stream — Nakkeerar, Cheraman Perumal and Nambiyandar Nambi himself.
|
| 10 |
Twelfth Thirumurai = Periyapuranam (Thiruthondar Puranam) by Sekkizhar, chief minister of Kulothunga Chola II (12th century CE). It narrates the lives of the 63 Nayanmars.

The Vaishnava canon is the Nalayira Divya Prabandham — 4,000 pasurams by the 12 Alvars, compiled by Nathamunigal (c. 9th–10th century CE) and arranged in four thousands: Mudhalayiram, Irandam Ayiram, Munram Ayiram and Iyarpa.
|

The Prabandham is revered as the Tamil Veda / Dravida Veda. Nammalvar’s Thiruvaymozhi (1,102 pasurams) is its crown; Nammalvar is hailed as Prapanna Jana Koodasthar and his work as Tamil Marai.

Andal is the only woman Alvar — author of Thiruppavai (30 pasurams, sung in Margazhi) and Nachiyar Thirumozhi (143). She was the foster daughter of Periyalvar (Vishnuchittar), composer of Thiruppallandu.
|

Thirumangai Alvar contributed the most pasurams (1,361, including Periya Thirumozhi 1,084). The Mudhal Alvargal — Poigai, Bhoothath and Pey — each sang 100 andhadhi verses. Kulasekara Alvar was a Chera king.
|

The Alvar hymns were sung at the 108 Divya Desams; Ramanuja later gave the Prabandham a status equal to the Sanskrit Vedas, making Sri Vaishnavas Ubhaya Vedantins (followers of both Vedas).

The centuries between the fall of the Sangam age and the rise of the imperial Cholas gave Tamil its most emotionally charged body of writing — Bhakti literature. Where Sangam poetry had sung of kings, cattle-raids and love, the Bhakti poets sang of a personal God who could be addressed, argued with and wept over. Two parallel movements carried this change: the Saiva Nayanmars, devoted to Siva, and the Vaishnava Alvars, devoted to Vishnu. Both travelled from shrine to shrine, sang in Tamil rather than Sanskrit, drew crowds of every caste, and in doing so pushed Jainism and Buddhism to the margins of Tamil religious life. Pallava and Pandya patronage gave the movement political weight, and the Cholas later turned its hymns into temple liturgy.
The Saiva canon: Panniru Thirumurai
The Saiva hymns were eventually gathered into twelve books called the Thirumurai, totalling roughly 18,000 verses. The first three books belong to Thirugnana Sambandar, a child prodigy of the 7th century who is said to have begun singing at the age of three. Books four to six are by Appar (Thirunavukkarasar), a former Jain who returned to Saivism and bore the title Vagisar; book seven is Sundarar’s Thiruppattu. Together these seven books are the Thevaram, and their three authors the Thevara Moovar. Add Manikkavasagar and the four become the Samaya Kuravargal, the preceptors of Saivism.
Manikkavasagar’s Thiruvasagam and Thirukkovaiyar form the eighth Thirumurai. Tradition remembers him as a minister of the Pandya king Varaguna who gave up office at Thirupperunthurai; the saying “Thiruvasagathukku urugathar oru vasagathukkum urugar” captures the emotional force of his verse. The ninth Thirumurai — Thiruvisaippa and Thiruppallandu — was sung by nine devotees, among them the Chola king Gandaraditya and Karuvur Thevar, and is valued for its musical settings. The tenth is Thirumoolar’s Thirumandiram, about 3,000 verses in nine thandirams, the first systematic statement of Saiva Siddhanta philosophy and the source of the famous egalitarian line “Onre kulam, oruvane devan.” The eleventh is a Prabandham anthology of twelve poets, including Karaikkal Ammaiyar, the earliest woman poet of the Bhakti stream, and Nambiyandar Nambi.
Nambi matters twice over, because he is also the compiler. Working at the Chidambaram Nataraja temple during the reign of Rajaraja Chola I, he is said to have recovered palm-leaf manuscripts long neglected in a sealed chamber and arranged them into the canon — which is why Rajaraja I is remembered as “Thirumurai Kanda Cholan”. The twelfth Thirumurai came later: Sekkizhar, chief minister of Kulothunga Chola II, composed the Periyapuranam (Thiruthondar Puranam), a verse biography of the 63 Nayanmars and itself a major source for Tamil social history.
The Vaishnava canon: Nalayira Divya Prabandham
The Vaishnava counterpart is the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, 4,000 pasurams composed by the twelve Alvars — a word glossed as “those immersed in God.” Scattered after their time, the hymns were recovered and arranged by Nathamunigal into four thousands: Mudhalayiram, Irandam Ayiram, Munram Ayiram and Iyarpa. The collection is revered as the Tamil Veda or Dravida Veda, and Ramanuja secured for it a standing equal to the Sanskrit Vedas, which is why Sri Vaishnavas are called Ubhaya Vedantins.
The first three Alvars — Poigai, Bhoothath and Pey, the Mudhal Alvargal — each left 100 andhadhi verses. Nammalvar’s Thiruvaymozhi, 1,102 pasurams, is the philosophical heart of the canon and is called the Tamil Marai; his disciple Madhurakavi Alvar wrote only eleven verses, all in praise of his teacher. Thirumangai Alvar, a reformed highwayman, contributed the largest share at 1,361 pasurams. Periyalvar (Vishnuchittar) sang the Thiruppallandu, and his foster daughter Andal — the only woman Alvar — gave Tamil the Thiruppavai, thirty pasurams recited through the month of Margazhi, and the Nachiyar Thirumozhi. Kulasekara Alvar was a Chera king, and Thiruppan Alvar left just ten verses, the Amalanadhipiran. The hymns are tied to 108 Divya Desams, and are still chanted daily at Srirangam.
For the TNPSC aspirant the examinable core is stable: who wrote which Thirumurai, who compiled which canon and under which king, the handful of signature verse-counts (3,000 / 4,000 / 1,102 / 30 / 63 / 108 / 12), and the titles — Thevara Moovar, Samaya Kuravargal, Thirumurai Kanda Cholan, Tamil Veda.
