Why transport geography matters for TNPSC
Transport and communication form the nervous system of a national economy. A mine without a railway siding is only a hole in the ground; a harvest without a road is only food that rots. TNPSC question papers return to this theme year after year because it links physical geography (relief, rivers, coastlines) to economic geography (industry, trade, employment) in a way that can be tested with precise, factual questions. The topic rewards candidates who memorise a small, well-chosen set of numbers and superlatives rather than those who read widely but vaguely.
Railways: the backbone of bulk movement
Indian Railways is Asia’s largest and the world’s fourth-largest rail network. It operates a route length of roughly 69,181 km, a running track of about 1,09,748 km and a total trackage of about 1,35,207 km. The institution as we know it dates to 1951, when 42 separate railway companies were amalgamated under a single national undertaking. Administration is decentralised into 18 zones, of which 17 are operational, and 68 operating divisions, each headed by a Divisional Railway Manager. The Railway Board, chaired by a Chairman cum Chief Executive Officer, governs the system on behalf of the Ministry of Railways.
The first three zones, all created in 1951, were Southern (headquarters Chennai), Central (Mumbai CSMT) and Western (Churchgate, Mumbai). Zones were added in waves, with a large batch in 2002-2003 that produced East Central (Hajipur), North Western (Jaipur), East Coast (Bhubaneswar), North Central (Prayagraj), South Western (Hubballi), South East Central (Bilaspur) and West Central (Jabalpur). The most recently notified zone is South Coast Railway, headquartered at Visakhapatnam, announced but not yet fully operational as of 2025. Tamil Nadu falls entirely within Southern Railway, which runs four divisions in the state: Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai and Salem.
History questions cluster around two dates. A granite-carrying track at Madras was working as early as 1837, but the first passenger train ran on 16 April 1853 between Bombay’s Bori Bunder and Thane, a stretch of 34 km. Technically, candidates should know that Indian broad gauge is 1,676 mm wide, that metre gauge measures 1,000 mm, and that narrow gauges of 762 mm and 610 mm survive on hill and heritage lines. Electrification has moved dramatically: about 99% of the broad-gauge network was electrified by October 2025, roughly 69,315 km out of 69,961 km. With about 12.5 lakh employees and some 7,461 stations, Indian Railways is among the largest single employers on earth.
Roadways: reach without rival
India’s road network exceeds 63 lakh km and is the second largest in the world after the United States. Roads reach where rails cannot: they serve the last village, carry perishables door to door, and feed traffic into railheads and ports. The hierarchy runs from National Highways through State Highways and Major District Roads to rural roads built under schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
The statistic examiners love is the mismatch between length and load. National Highways account for only about 2% of total road length, roughly 1,51,000 km, yet they carry in the order of 40% of India’s road traffic. State Highways run to about 1,86,528 km. Among individual highways, NH-44 is the giant: about 4,112 km from Srinagar in the north to Kanyakumari at the southern tip, crossing Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It was assembled in the 2010 renumbering by merging seven older highways, the longest contributor being the old NH-7.
Institutions and programmes are equally examinable. The National Highways Authority of India was constituted by an Act of Parliament in 1988 and came into existence on 15 June 1989. The National Highways Development Project delivered the Golden Quadrilateral, a 5,846 km four-to-six-lane ring joining Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, and the North-South and East-West Corridor of 7,142 km, running Srinagar to Kanyakumari and Silchar to Porbandar. Bharatmala Pariyojana, launched in 2017, targets about 83,677 km of development with 34,800 km in Phase I. Tamil Nadu carries about 2.71 lakh km of roads with a road density of 2,084.71 km per 1,000 sq km, comfortably above the national figure of 1,926.02, and about 6,805 km of National Highways spread over 48 highways.
Water transport: ports and inland waterways
India’s 7,500 km coastline supports 13 major ports administered by the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, alongside roughly 200 non-major ports under state governments. On the east coast lie Kolkata (renamed Syama Prasad Mookerjee), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Kamarajar at Ennore and V.O. Chidambaranar at Thoothukudi. The west coast has Deendayal at Kandla, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru at Nhava Sheva, Mormugao, New Mangalore and Cochin, with Port Blair serving the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Superlatives to fix in memory: Kolkata is the oldest, established by the British East India Company and India’s only major riverine port; Visakhapatnam is the deepest, with natural depth exceeding 16.5 metres; Jawaharlal Nehru Port is the largest container port; Kamarajar Port at Ennore is the only major port that functions as a company rather than a port authority, with the Union Government holding the majority stake; and Vadhavan in Maharashtra, approved in June 2024, is the newest addition. Tamil Nadu holds three major ports, an intermediate port at Nagapattinam and sixteen minor ports under the state.
Inland water transport is the cheapest mode for bulk, low-value cargo but remains underused. India has about 14,500 km of navigable inland waterways, of which roughly 5,200 km of rivers and 4,000 km of canals suit mechanised craft. The National Waterways Act, 2016 took the count of declared National Waterways to 111 by adding 106 to the five already notified. NW-1 is the longest at 1,620 km, running from Haldia to Prayagraj along the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly system. NW-2 covers 891 km of the Brahmaputra between Dhubri and Sadiya. NW-3, in Kerala, covers 205 km of the West Coast Canal with the Champakara and Udyogmandal canals, from Kottapuram to Kollam. NW-4 Phase-1 covers 82 km of the Krishna from Muktiyala to Vijayawada. The Inland Waterways Authority of India is the statutory body charged with development, and the Sagarmala programme addresses port-led development and port connectivity.
Air transport and communication
Civil aviation is governed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, with the Airports Authority of India managing airports and air navigation services and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation acting as the safety regulator. Air transport is indispensable for high-value, time-sensitive freight and for reaching difficult terrain in the Himalayas and the island territories. Tamil Nadu has four international airports, at Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli, plus several domestic and private airfields including Salem, Thoothukudi, Vellore, Hosur, Thanjavur and Neyveli.
Urban mass transit is now part of transport geography. Chennai Metro’s two operational lines cover about 54.1 km with 41 stations: the Green Line from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount, 22 km with 17 stations, opened on 29 June 2015, and the Blue Line from Wimco Nagar to Chennai Airport, 32.65 km with 26 stations, opened on 21 September 2016. Expansion plans add roughly 116 km across further lines.
Communication completes the picture. India runs one of the world’s largest postal networks, with the PIN code system of six digits introduced in 1972 and the first digit identifying the postal region. Telecommunications are overseen by the Department of Telecommunications with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, established in 1997, as regulator. Satellite communication rests on ISRO’s INSAT and GSAT series, which carry telephony, television broadcasting, meteorology and disaster warning. For the examination, the point to carry forward is structural: transport and communication are not separate chapters but two halves of the same connectivity story, and questions increasingly test the links between them.
