The Vedic Period (c. 1500-600 BCE) — Rig Vedic & Later Vedic Age
| 1 |
The Vedic Period spans c. 1500-600 BCE and is split into the Early or Rig Vedic Age (1500-1000 BCE) and the Later Vedic Age (1000-600 BCE).

Sapta Sindhu, the land of seven rivers, was the Rig Vedic homeland: Sindhu (Indus), Vitasta (Jhelum), Asikni (Chenab), Parushni (Ravi), Vipasa (Beas), Shutudri (Sutlej) and the Sarasvati.

The Dasarajna or Battle of the Ten Kings (Rig Veda, Mandala VII, Hymn 18) was fought on the banks of the Parushni (Ravi). Sudas of the Bharata tribe, guided by the priest Vasishtha, defeated a confederacy of ten tribes led by the Purus; the rival priest was Vishwamitra.
|

Rig Vedic political units in ascending order were Kula (family), Grama (village), Vis (clan) and Jana (tribe). The Rajan was a tribal chief, not an absolute monarch, aided by the Purohita, Senani and Gramani.
|
| 7 |
Rig Vedic assemblies were the Sabha (council of elders), Samiti (general assembly of the whole clan), Vidatha (oldest, for distribution of spoils) and Gana. Women attended the Sabha and Vidatha in this age.
|
| 8 |
The Rig Vedic economy was pastoral. The cow (gau) was the chief measure of wealth, a wealthy man was a gomat, and a war fought for cattle was called Gavishti. Barley (yava) was the main crop; copper and bronze were known, but iron was not.

The Later Vedic Age is India’s Iron Age. Iron was called Krishna Ayas or Shyama Ayas, and the period is archaeologically identified with the Painted Grey Ware (PGW) culture. The centre of life shifted from the Punjab to the Ganga-Yamuna Doab.

Later Vedic polity grew from Jana to Janapada and then Rashtra, a term that appears for the first time in this age. Kingship became hereditary. Regional titles were Samrat (east), Bhoja (south), Virat (north), Swarat (west) and Raja (middle country). Twelve Ratnins formed the king’s council.
|
| 11 |
The three great royal sacrifices were the Rajasuya (consecration of the king), the Ashvamedha (horse sacrifice asserting territorial supremacy) and the Vajapeya (a chariot race for prestige). The Vidatha disappeared and women were excluded from the Sabha.

The Purusha Sukta of Rig Veda Mandala X gives the earliest mention of the four varnas. In the Later Vedic age varna became rigid: upanayana was limited to the three higher varnas, the Shudras were denied the Gayatri Mantra, and the gotra system with its marriage rules emerged.

The six Vedangas, the limbs of the Veda, are Shiksha (phonetics), Kalpa (ritual), Vyakarana (grammar), Nirukta (etymology), Chhandas (metre) and Jyotisha (astronomy). The Upanishads, called Vedanta, number 108, and India’s national motto Satyameva Jayate is taken from the Mundaka Upanishad.

Religion changed sharply: Indra and Agni, the chief Rig Vedic gods, declined while Prajapati became supreme and Rudra and Vishnu rose. The number of priests at a sacrifice grew from seven to seventeen, and the Upanishadic revolt against ritualism prepared the ground for Buddhism and Jainism.

Key Later Vedic figures and texts: Parikshit and Janamejaya of the Kuru line, and the philosopher-king Janaka of Videha whose court hosted the sage Yajnavalkya. The Satapatha Brahmana, attached to the Yajur Veda, is the largest and most important of the Brahmanas.

From the Indus to the Ganga: who were the Vedic people?
The Vedic Period opens the second great chapter of ancient Indian history. The Harappan cities had declined by about 1900 BCE, and over the centuries that followed, Indo-Aryan speaking pastoral communities settled across the north-western plains. Their literature, composed and transmitted orally in archaic Sanskrit, is the only substantial written window we have into this age, which is why historians call it the Vedic Period rather than naming it after a city or a dynasty. The question of the Aryan homeland remains disputed: the Central Asian or South Russian steppe theory is the one most widely argued in academic work, with the Bactria-Margiana region often described as a staging point, while other scholars have proposed an indigenous origin. For TNPSC purposes the safest position is that the debate is unsettled, and the archaeological marker most often linked with the later phase is the Painted Grey Ware culture.
The Early or Rig Vedic Age, c. 1500-1000 BCE
The geography of the Rig Veda is the geography of the Punjab and the north-west. The hymns call this region Sapta Sindhu, the land of seven rivers, and the Nadistuti hymn of Mandala X praises the Sindhu as leader among rivers. Life was overwhelmingly pastoral. Cattle were the measure of everything: a rich man was a gomat, a daughter was a duhitri or one who milks, a unit of time was measured by the grazing of cows, and a raid or war fought over cattle carried the name Gavishti, literally the search for cows. Agriculture existed but was secondary, with barley the chief grain. People knew copper and bronze, which they called ayas, but iron had not yet entered their world. Society at this stage was tribal rather than caste-bound. The jana or tribe was the largest unit, built up from the kula, the grama and the vis. The rajan who led it was a chief answerable to his kinsmen, chosen for his ability in war, supported by the purohita who performed the rituals, the senani who led the army and the gramani who headed a village settlement. There was no regular taxation; the people brought voluntary offerings called bali. What limited the chief most were the popular assemblies. The samiti was the general gathering of the whole clan, the sabha a smaller body of elders, and the vidatha, probably the oldest of all, dealt with the distribution of spoils and with religious functions. Women of this age were educated and present in public life: Apala, Ghosha, Lopamudra and Vishwavara are remembered as composers of hymns, and there is no evidence of child marriage or sati in the Rig Veda. The single most famous political event of the age is the Dasarajna, the Battle of the Ten Kings, recorded in the eighteenth hymn of Mandala VII. Sudas, king of the Bharatas, with Vasishtha as his priest, defeated a confederacy of ten tribes led by the Purus on the banks of the Parushni, the modern Ravi. The Bharatas and the Purus later merged to form the Kuru people, and from that fusion the political centre of gravity began its long move eastward.
The Later Vedic Age, c. 1000-600 BCE
Iron changed everything. Known in the texts as krishna ayas or shyama ayas, the dark metal made it possible to clear the dense forests of the Ganga-Yamuna doab and to drive a heavier plough through its soil. Settlement shifted east, and with surplus agriculture came larger populations, a more complex society and the first stirrings of urban life at sites such as Hastinapura and Kaushambi, which remained modest towns rather than true cities. Rice, called vrihi, and wheat, called godhuma, joined barley as staples. The political consequences were immediate. The jana gave way to the janapada, a territory named after the people who held it, and the word rashtra, meaning a kingdom defined by land rather than kinship, appears for the first time. Kingship became hereditary and was dressed in elaborate ritual. The Rajasuya consecrated a new king, the Vajapeya involved a chariot race that renewed his prestige, and the Ashvamedha let a horse wander for a year so that every territory it crossed unchallenged became a claim of overlordship. Regional titles multiplied, with Samrat in the east, Bhoja in the south, Virat in the north, Swarat in the west and Raja in the middle country, and the king was now served by a body of twelve ratnins including the purohita, the senani, the gramani and the sangrahitri or treasurer. As royal power grew, popular power shrank. The vidatha disappeared altogether, the sabha and samiti fell under the control of chiefs and wealthy nobles, and women were shut out of the sabha. Taxes such as bali, bhaga and shulka became regular obligations rather than gifts. Society hardened along the same lines. The Purusha Sukta of Mandala X, itself a late hymn, had already described the four varnas as parts of a cosmic being, and in this period that image became social practice: only the three higher varnas received the sacred thread at upanayana, the Shudras were excluded from the Gayatri Mantra and from Vedic study, and the gotra system fixed descent and forbade marriage within the same lineage. The position of women fell further, with loss of inheritance rights and the spread of early marriage. Three ashramas, brahmacharya, grihastha and vanaprastha, were well established, and sannyasa was added later to complete the scheme of four. Religion followed the same curve. Indra and Agni faded, Prajapati the creator became supreme, and Rudra and Vishnu grew in importance. Sacrifice became an enormous and expensive enterprise, with the number of officiating priests rising from seven to seventeen, and Brahmana texts such as the Satapatha Brahmana, the largest of them, laid down the procedure in minute detail. The reaction came from within. The Aranyakas, composed for forest-dwellers, turned from ritual to its meaning, and the Upanishads went further, dismissing mechanical sacrifice and asking instead about atman, the self, and brahman, the ultimate reality. Kshatriya thinkers took part in these debates, most famously Janaka of Videha, in whose court the sage Yajnavalkya argued. It was from this questioning atmosphere, and from the discontent of those whom the ritual order excluded, that Buddhism and Jainism emerged around 600 BCE, just as the sixteen Mahajanapadas replaced the Vedic tribal kingdoms and India entered a new age.
Rig Veda VII.18 records that Sudas of the Bharatas defeated the ten-tribe confederacy on the Parushni, the modern Ravi.
Jana, vis and grama belong to the Rig Vedic kin-based order; rashtra, a kingdom defined by territory, is a Later Vedic development.
The Purusha Sukta occurs in Mandala X, one of the two latest books of the Rig Veda, which is why the varna scheme is seen as a late entry.
Satyameva Jayate is from the Mundaka Upanishad, which is attached to the Atharva Veda.
Iron, called krishna ayas, appears only in the Later Vedic age; the Rig Vedic people knew copper and bronze, both called ayas.
