🔥 Heat & Thermodynamics |

🎯 Key Points |

1Heat is a form of energy in transit, flowing from a hotter body to a colder one. Its SI unit is the joule (J); the older CGS unit is the calorie. 1 calorie = 4.186 J.

2Temperature measures the degree of hotness of a body. Its SI unit is the kelvin (K), one of the seven base SI units.

3Scale conversions: K = °C + 273.15 and °F = (9/5) × °C + 32. The Celsius and Fahrenheit readings are numerically equal only at −40°.

4Absolute zero is 0 K = −273.15 °C = −459.67 °F — the theoretical temperature at which molecular motion is minimum. It can never be actually attained.

5Anomalous expansion of water: water contracts when heated from 0 °C to 4 °C and expands above 4 °C. It has maximum density (minimum volume) at 4 °C.

6Because of this anomaly ice floats on water and the bottom of a frozen lake stays at 4 °C — allowing aquatic life to survive in winter.

7Specific heat capacity (c) is the heat needed to raise 1 kg of a substance by 1 K: Q = m × c × ΔT. For water c = 4186 J/kg·K (1 cal/g·°C) — the highest among common liquids.

8Water’s high specific heat makes it an excellent coolant in car radiators and industrial plants, and moderates the climate of coastal regions.

9Latent heat (L) is the heat absorbed or released during a change of state at constant temperature: Q = m × L. Latent heat of fusion of ice = 336 J/g (80 cal/g); latent heat of vaporisation of water = 2260 J/g (540 cal/g).

10Steam at 100 °C causes far more severe burns than boiling water at 100 °C, because steam additionally releases its large latent heat of vaporisation on condensing.

11Thermal expansion coefficients are related as β = 2α and γ = 3α, where α, β and γ are the linear, areal and cubical expansion coefficients.

12Applications of expansion: gaps left between railway tracks, roller supports on bridges, sagging of overhead wires, and the bimetallic strip used in thermostats and fire alarms.

13Heat travels by three modes — conduction (through solids, no bulk movement of matter), convection (in fluids, with bulk movement — land and sea breezes) and radiation (needs no medium — sunlight reaching the Earth).

14Silver is the best conductor of heat among metals; wood, asbestos, air and cork are poor conductors (insulators). A thermos flask defeats all three modes using a vacuum, silvered walls and a cork stopper.

15Laws of thermodynamics: Zeroth (defines temperature and thermal equilibrium), First (ΔQ = ΔU + ΔW, conservation of energy), Second (entropy of an isolated system never decreases) and Third (entropy tends to zero as temperature tends to 0 K).

📖 Detailed Notes — English

1. Heat and Temperature are Not the Same

Beginners often treat heat and temperature as synonyms, but in physics they are sharply distinct. Heat is energy in transit — it exists only while it is flowing from a body at higher temperature to one at lower temperature. Temperature, on the other hand, is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules of a body; it decides the direction in which heat will flow. A bucket of water at 40 °C contains far more heat energy than a cup of water at 90 °C, yet heat flows from the cup to the bucket if they are brought into contact. The SI unit of heat is the joule and that of temperature is the kelvin. One calorie, the heat needed to raise 1 gram of water through 1 °C, equals 4.186 joules — a value established by James Prescott Joule’s classic experiment on the mechanical equivalent of heat.

2. Temperature Scales and Their Conversion

Three scales appear repeatedly in TNPSC papers. The Celsius scale fixes the ice point at 0° and the steam point at 100°. The Fahrenheit scale fixes them at 32° and 212°, giving 180 divisions between the two fixed points. The Kelvin or absolute scale starts at absolute zero. The working relations are K = °C + 273.15 and °F = (9/5) × °C + 32. A favourite examiner’s trick is to ask at which temperature the Celsius and Fahrenheit thermometers read the same number — the answer is −40°. Absolute zero, 0 K or −273.15 °C, is the temperature at which the thermal motion of molecules is at its theoretical minimum; the Third Law of Thermodynamics tells us it can be approached but never actually reached in a finite number of steps.

3. Thermal Expansion and the Strange Behaviour of Water

Almost all substances expand on heating because the average separation between molecules increases. For solids we define three coefficients — linear (α), areal (β) and cubical (γ) — related simply as β = 2α and γ = 3α. Engineers must design around this: small gaps are left between railway rails, bridges rest on roller supports, and transmission wires are strung with a deliberate sag so that they do not snap in winter. The bimetallic strip — two metals of different expansivity riveted together — bends on heating and is the heart of the thermostat in an electric iron, refrigerator and automatic fire alarm.

Water famously breaks the rule. Between 0 °C and 4 °C water contracts on heating, reaching its maximum density at 4 °C; only above 4 °C does it begin to expand normally. This anomalous expansion has profound ecological consequences. As a lake cools in winter, the densest water at 4 °C sinks to the bottom while colder, lighter water rises and freezes at the surface. Ice, being less dense than water, floats and acts as an insulating blanket. Fish and aquatic plants survive the winter in the 4 °C water beneath.

4. Specific Heat Capacity and Latent Heat

The heat required to change the temperature of a body is given by Q = m c ΔT, where c is the specific heat capacity. Water’s value of 4186 J/kg·K is remarkably high — it takes a lot of energy to warm water and water gives out a lot of energy when it cools. This is why water is used as the coolant in car radiators and thermal power stations, why hot water bottles work so well, and why coastal towns such as Chennai have a far smaller day-to-night temperature swing than inland towns such as Salem.

During a change of state the temperature stays constant even though heat continues to flow. This hidden heat is the latent heat, given by Q = m L. For ice melting into water the latent heat of fusion is 336 J/g (80 cal/g); for water boiling into steam the latent heat of vaporisation is 2260 J/g (540 cal/g). The enormous latent heat of vaporisation explains two everyday facts: a scald from steam is much worse than one from boiling water, and sweating cools the body because evaporating perspiration draws latent heat from the skin.

5. Modes of Heat Transfer and the Laws of Thermodynamics

Heat moves in three ways. In conduction, energy passes from molecule to molecule without any bulk movement of matter — the mechanism in solids, best in silver and copper, worst in wood, cork, asbestos and still air. In convection, the heated fluid itself moves, carrying energy with it; land and sea breezes, monsoon circulation and the working of a chimney are all convection. In radiation, energy travels as electromagnetic waves and needs no medium at all — this is how the Sun’s heat crosses 150 million kilometres of vacuum. A thermos flask is the classic exam example of a device that blocks all three: a vacuum between double walls stops conduction and convection, silvered surfaces reflect radiation, and a cork or plastic stopper seals the top. Two radiation laws are worth remembering: Stefan-Boltzmann law (energy radiated per unit area is proportional to the fourth power of absolute temperature) and Wien’s displacement law (the wavelength of maximum emission is inversely proportional to absolute temperature).

Finally, the four laws of thermodynamics frame the whole subject. The Zeroth Law states that two bodies each in thermal equilibrium with a third are in equilibrium with each other — this is what makes a thermometer possible. The First Law, ΔQ = ΔU + ΔW, is simply the conservation of energy applied to heat. The Second Law states that the entropy of an isolated system never decreases and that heat cannot flow spontaneously from a colder to a hotter body — this is why no engine can be 100% efficient. The Third Law states that entropy approaches zero as the temperature approaches absolute zero.

💡 Memory Tips |

1. “ZEroth defines TEmperature.” The Zeroth Law came last but was numbered first because it defines the very idea of temperature that the other three laws assume.

2. “Ice 80, Steam 540.” In calories per gram, the latent heat of fusion of ice is 80 and that of vaporisation of water is 540. Steam carries nearly seven times more hidden heat — which is exactly why a steam burn is worse.

3. “Water loves the number 4.” Maximum density at 4 °C, specific heat 4186 J/kg·K, and 1 calorie = 4.186 J. Three of water’s most-asked constants all begin with 4.

4. “Contact — Current — Cosmos” for the three modes. Contact = Conduction (touching solids), Current = Convection (moving fluid), Cosmos = Radiation (crosses empty space).

5. “1 — 2 — 3 for α, β, γ.” Linear is 1α, areal is 2α, cubical is 3α. Count the dimensions: a line has 1, an area has 2, a volume has 3.
