🧠 Human Nervous System — Neurons, Brain, Spinal Cord & Reflex Action
Every breath you take, every word you read on this page and every time you pull your hand back from a hot vessel, one system is doing the work — the nervous system. It is the body’s control and communication network, receiving information from inside and outside the body, interpreting it, and ordering a response within milliseconds. For TNPSC General Science, this chapter is a reliable source of one or two direct questions in almost every Group examination, and the questions are overwhelmingly factual: numbers, part-function pairs, and the reflex pathway.
1. The Neuron — the Working Unit
The neuron or nerve cell is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system, and it holds the distinction of being the longest cell in the human body. A neuron has three recognisable parts. The cyton or cell body contains the nucleus along with granular structures called Nissl’s granules. Branching out of the cyton are the short, tree-like dendrites, which always conduct impulses towards the cell body. The single long fibre leaving the cyton is the axon, which conducts the impulse away from the cell body. Many axons are wrapped in a fatty myelin sheath produced by Schwann cells; the small gaps along this sheath are the nodes of Ranvier, and the impulse leaps from node to node, which is why myelinated fibres conduct far faster than unmyelinated ones.
Neurons are classified two ways. By structure: unipolar (a single process, seen in the embryonic stage), bipolar (one axon and one dendrite, found in the retina of the eye and the olfactory epithelium), and multipolar (one axon with many dendrites, found in the cerebral cortex). By function: sensory or afferent neurons carry impulses from receptors to the CNS, motor or efferent neurons carry commands from the CNS to muscles and glands, and association neurons (interneurons) connect the two inside the CNS.
Neurons never physically touch. The junction between them is the synapse, a microscopic gap crossed not by electricity but by a chemical messenger called a neurotransmitter — most commonly acetylcholine. The impulse travels along the neuron as an electrical wave and across the synapse as a chemical signal.
2. Organisation of the Nervous System
The system is divided into three parts. The Central Nervous System (CNS) consists of the brain and spinal cord and is the processing centre. The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) is the cabling: 12 pairs of cranial nerves arising from the brain and 31 pairs of spinal nerves arising from the spinal cord. The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) governs involuntary organs and has two opposing halves — the sympathetic and the parasympathetic.
3. The Brain and its Three Regions
The adult human brain weighs roughly 1.4 kilograms and is triple-protected: by the bony cranium, by three membranes called meninges — the tough outer dura mater, the middle arachnoid and the delicate inner pia mater — and by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which acts as a shock absorber, supplies nutrients, removes wastes and keeps pressure inside the skull constant. Inflammation of the meninges is the disease meningitis.
The forebrain contains the cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and the seat of sensory perception, intelligence, consciousness, memory, thinking, language, decision-making and all voluntary action. Its two hemispheres are joined by the corpus callosum, and its outer grey layer is the cerebral cortex. It is divided into four lobes — frontal (reasoning and movement), parietal (touch and taste), temporal (hearing and memory) and occipital (vision). The thalamus acts as the relay station for sensory impulses heading to the cerebrum. The hypothalamus, though small, regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep and water balance, and forms the critical bridge between the nervous system and the endocrine glands.
The midbrain is short and carries four rounded bodies called the corpora quadrigemina, which control visual and auditory reflexes — turning your head towards a sudden sound, for instance.
The hindbrain contains the cerebellum, pons and medulla oblongata. The cerebellum, the second largest part, maintains balance, posture and the coordination of voluntary muscle movement; damage to it produces unsteady, jerky movement. The pons is a bridge of fibres between the two halves of the cerebellum and helps regulate respiration. The medulla oblongata is the lowest part, continuing into the spinal cord, and controls the involuntary vital functions — heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure, swallowing, vomiting, coughing and sneezing. An injury here is almost always fatal.
4. The Spinal Cord
The spinal cord extends downward from the medulla oblongata and runs inside the protective vertebral column. An important distinction for examinations: in the brain, grey matter is on the outside and white matter inside; in the spinal cord the arrangement is reversed — the butterfly-shaped grey matter sits in the centre and white matter surrounds it. Grey matter is made of cell bodies, white matter of myelinated axons. The spinal cord conducts impulses to and from the brain and, more famously, is the control centre of reflex action.
5. Reflex Action and the Reflex Arc
A reflex action is a sudden, automatic, involuntary response to a stimulus that protects the body before the brain has even registered what happened. The pathway it follows is the reflex arc: receptor → sensory (afferent) neuron → spinal cord (interneuron) → motor (efferent) neuron → effector organ. Because the signal is processed in the spinal cord and does not travel up to the brain for a decision, the response is extremely fast. Classic examples are the knee-jerk reflex, blinking when an object approaches the eye, sneezing, and instantly withdrawing the hand from a hot vessel. Reflexes present from birth, such as sucking and blinking, are unconditioned reflexes; those learned through experience, such as salivating at the smell of food — demonstrated by Ivan Pavlov in his famous experiments on dogs — are conditioned reflexes.
6. Autonomic Nervous System and Common Disorders
The sympathetic division prepares the body for emergencies — the fight-or-flight response — by increasing the heartbeat and breathing rate, dilating the pupils and diverting blood to the muscles. The parasympathetic division does the opposite, restoring rest-and-digest conditions by slowing the heart and stimulating digestion. The two work in balance.
Important disorders for TNPSC: Alzheimer’s disease (progressive memory loss in old age), Parkinson’s disease (tremors and rigidity caused by deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine), epilepsy (recurrent seizures from abnormal electrical activity), meningitis (inflammation of the meninges), and paralysis (loss of muscle function following nerve or spinal cord damage).
