📖 Detailed Notes / விரிவான குறிப்புகள் (English)

Thirukkural, composed by the ancient Tamil poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar, stands as one of the greatest literary achievements in human history. Known by the epithet “உலகப் பொது மறை” (Universal Scripture), it transcends boundaries of religion, caste, and geography to offer timeless wisdom on ethics, governance, and love.

The Author — Thiruvalluvar: Very little is historically confirmed about Thiruvalluvar’s life. He is believed to have lived sometime between the 1st century BCE and the 5th century CE. He is said to have been born in Mylapore (Madras/Chennai) or Thirunayanar Kuppam, and was a weaver by profession. His wife Vasuki is celebrated in Tamil tradition as a model of devotion and intelligence. He is referred to by many honorific names: Deiva Pulavar (Divine Poet), Poyyamozhi Pulavar (Poet of Truth), Gnana Vettiyan (Harvester of Wisdom), Senna Pothar, and Valluvar. Tamil Nadu officially counts years from 31 BCE as the “Thiruvalluvar Era,” and celebrates Thiruvalluvar Day on January 15 or 16 each year.

Structure of Thirukkural: The text is composed of exactly 1,330 couplets (Kurals) organized into 133 chapters (Adhikarams), each chapter containing precisely 10 couplets. The entire work is written in the Kural Venba metre, a unique Tamil metre — each couplet has exactly 7 words (4 in the first line, 3 in the second). This brevity gives the Kurals their lapidary quality: every word carries enormous weight and meaning.

The Three Paal (Divisions):

1. Arathuppaal (அறத்துப்பால்) — Book of Virtue: Chapters 1–38 (380 Kurals). This division deals with ethics and morality governing personal and social life. It covers praise of God, duties of married life (Illaram), duties of asceticism (Thuravaram), and the concept of fate (Oozhal). The very first chapter, Kadavul Vazhthu, opens with the famous Kural comparing the primacy of God to the primacy of the letter ‘A’ in Tamil.

2. Porutpaal (பொருட்பால்) — Book of Polity/Wealth: Chapters 39–108 (700 Kurals). The largest section, covering kingship, ministers, the machinery of state, warfare, diplomacy, friendship, agriculture, and general conduct of public life. It is effectively a treatise on political science and public administration — highly relevant to TNPSC candidates. Key topics include qualities of a good king, role of ministers, importance of education, dangers of sloth, and virtues of friendship.

3. Inbathuppaal (இன்பத்துப்பால்) — Book of Love: Chapters 109–133 (250 Kurals). This section treats romantic love following the classical Tamil Akam (interior) poetic tradition. It is divided into Kalatuviyal (union) and Kalavial (separation), portraying the joy of togetherness and the anguish of parting with extraordinary emotional depth.

Language and Style: The Kural Venba metre requires that no word be wasted — every syllable must bear semantic load. The language is classical Senthamizh but the ideas are universally applicable. Unlike contemporary Sanskrit texts restricted to learned circles, Thirukkural was composed for everyone — farmer, king, merchant, and ascetic alike.

Commentaries (Urai): Ten classical commentators wrote elaborations on Thirukkural: Manakkudavar, Paridhi, Kalinagar, Nachcharkiniyar, Parimelalagar, Pariperumaal, Thirumalaiyar, Mallar, Kavignar, and Dhamathar. Parimelalagar’s commentary is considered the most scholarly and authoritative, shaping how Thirukkural is read and taught in Tamil Nadu.

Global Recognition: Thirukkural has been translated into more than 80 languages worldwide. The first English translation was done by G.U. Pope in 1886. UNESCO has recognized it as part of world literary heritage. It is taught in universities from Germany to China to the United States.

TNPSC Examination Relevance: Thirukkural features prominently in all TNPSC examinations — Group I, Group II, Group IIA, Group IV, and VAO. Candidates are tested on: total Kurals and chapters, three Paal divisions and chapter counts, Thiruvalluvar’s titles, metre used, famous commentators, translation history, and the meaning of individual Kurals. It is one of the most score-friendly topics if studied systematically.
