The Sanyasi Rebellion (1763–1800) in Bengal and Bihar, led by Manju Shah, Musa Shah, Bhawani Pathak and Debi Chaudhurani, is treated as the earliest organised anti-British peasant revolt; Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s novel Anandamath is based on it.

The East India Company demarcated Damin-i-Koh (the ‘skirts of the hills’) in 1832 in present-day Jharkhand and settled the Santhals there — the land-grab that followed became the direct cause of the Santhal Hul.

The Santhal Hul ran from 30 June 1855 to 3 January 1856 in the Rajmahal Hills, led by the four Murmu brothers — Sidhu, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairav; their sisters Phoolo and Jhano also fought and died. ‘Hul’ means liberation or revolution in Santhali.

Martial law was proclaimed on 10 November 1855 and an estimated 10,000–15,000 Santhals were killed. The British response was administrative: the Sonthal Parganas Act (Act 37 of 1855) created a separate district, and the Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act, 1876 barred transfer of tribal land to non-tribals.

Birsa Munda (born 15 November 1875) called himself Dharti Aaba (Father of the Earth) and founded the Birsait faith in 1895. His Ulgulan (‘Great Tumult’, 1899–1900) demanded restoration of the communal khuntkatti land system and abolition of beth-begari (forced unpaid labour).

The Rampa (Manyam) Rebellion of August 1922 – May 1924 in the Godavari Agency was led by Alluri Sitarama Raju, hailed as Manyam Veerudu (Hero of the Jungle); the trigger was the Madras Forest Act of 1882, which banned the tribal podu (shifting) cultivation.

Gandhian-era peasant struggles built on these revolts: Champaran (1917) ended the tinkathia system through the Champaran Agrarian Act 1918; Kheda (1918); Bardoli (1928) earned Vallabhbhai Patel the title ‘Sardar’; the All India Kisan Sabha was founded in 1936 at Lucknow under Swami Sahajanand Saraswati; and the Tebhaga movement (1946–47) demanded a two-thirds crop share for sharecroppers.

Why the forest and the field rose before the city did
Long before the Indian National Congress held its first session in 1885, the sharpest armed resistance to Company rule came from tribal hamlets and paddy fields. Between 1763 and 1900 the British faced more than seventy separate risings. TNPSC sets questions from this block almost every cycle because the pattern is so clean: a colonial revenue or forest law arrives, a traditional system of land-holding collapses, an outsider moneylender steps into the gap, and the community fights back.
The three colonial pressures
First came revenue settlement. The Permanent Settlement of 1793 and the Ryotwari and Mahalwari systems that followed converted a customary right to cultivate into a cash liability enforceable in a British court. Second came the moneylender, or diku. When the cash demand fell due before the harvest was sold, the peasant borrowed at 50 to 500 per cent interest and lost the land to the lender. Third came forest law. The Indian Forest Acts and, in the south, the Madras Forest Act of 1882, redefined the forest as state property and criminalised podu shifting cultivation, grazing and the gathering of minor produce. To a Munda or a Koya, this was not a regulation but a confiscation of a way of life.
Phase one: the early risings, 1763–1856
The Sanyasi Rebellion (1763–1800) in Bengal and Bihar, remembered through Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s Anandamath, is usually taken as the opening chapter; Manju Shah, Bhawani Pathak and Debi Chaudhurani drew both Hindu and Muslim ascetics and dispossessed peasants into the same fight. The Chuar uprising (1767–1833) of the Jungle Mahals threw up Rani Shiromani of Karnagarh and Ganga Narayan Singh. The Kol uprising (1831–32) welded the Ho, Oraon, Munda and Bhumij together against land transfers, and the Khond rising of 1850 in the Orissa tributary states under Chief Bisoi resisted interference with their customs.
The greatest of them was the Santhal Hul. After the Company demarcated Damin-i-Koh in 1832 and invited the Santhals to clear and settle it, mahajans and revenue farmers followed them in. On 30 June 1855 some thirty thousand Santhals assembled at Bhognadih behind the Murmu brothers — Sidhu, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairav — and declared Company rule at an end. Their sisters Phoolo and Jhano fought alongside them. Martial law followed on 10 November 1855, the rising was broken by 3 January 1856, and between ten and fifteen thousand Santhals died. Yet the administration conceded the point: the Sonthal Parganas Act (Act 37 of 1855) carved out a separate district, and the Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act of 1876 forbade the sale of tribal land to outsiders.
Phase two: the peasant agitations, 1859–1900
After 1857 the character of protest changed — it became legal, organised and often non-violent. The Indigo Revolt of 1859–60 is the model. European planters advanced loans that compelled ryots to sow indigo on their best land for about 2.5 per cent of its market price. At Chougacha in Nadia, Digambar and Bishnucharan Biswas led a simple refusal to sow. The Bengal intelligentsia and the vernacular press joined in; Dinabandhu Mitra’s play Nil Darpan (1860), translated by Michael Madhusudan Dutt and published by Rev. James Long — who was fined a thousand rupees and jailed for a month — carried the case to Calcutta drawing rooms. An Indigo Commission reported in 1860 and the Indigo Act of 1862 made forced cultivation illegal.
The Pabna Agrarian League of May 1873, formed in Yusufshahi pargana under Ishan Chandra Roy, fought illegal rent enhancement through rent strikes and law-suits and helped secure the Bengal Tenancy Act of 1885. In western India the Deccan Riots of 1875, beginning at Supa in Pune district, saw ryots seize and burn the bonds and deeds held by Marwari and Gujarati sowkars; the government answered with the Deccan Agriculturists Relief Act of 1879, which restricted the imprisonment of debtors and empowered courts to reopen usurious accounts.
Phase three: Ulgulan and the twentieth century
Birsa Munda, born on 15 November 1875, combined religious reform with land politics. Proclaiming himself Dharti Aaba and founding the Birsait faith in 1895, he demanded the restoration of khuntkatti — the clan’s collective title to land it had itself cleared — and the abolition of beth-begari. His Ulgulan, the Great Tumult of 1899–1900, ended at Dombari Hill (Sail Rakab) on 9 January 1900; he was seized on 3 February in the Jamkopai forest and died in Ranchi Jail on 9 June 1900, aged twenty-four. The Chotanagpur Tenancy Act of 1908 is his monument. The Tana Bhagat movement of Jatra Bhagat followed in 1913–14, and in the Godavari hills Alluri Sitarama Raju led the Rampa or Manyam Rebellion from August 1922 to May 1924 against the Madras Forest Act, raiding police stations for arms before he was captured and shot.
From 1917 the Congress absorbed this energy. Champaran ended the tinkathia obligation through the Champaran Agrarian Act of 1918; Kheda (1918) was a no-revenue campaign; the Awadh Kisan Sabha (1920) under Baba Ramchandra and the Eka movement (1921–22) under Madari Pasi carried it into the United Provinces; Bardoli (1928) gave Vallabhbhai Patel the title Sardar; the All India Kisan Sabha was born at Lucknow in 1936 under Swami Sahajanand Saraswati; and the Tebhaga (1946–47) and Telangana (1948–51) struggles carried the demand for the tiller’s right into independent India, where it shaped the abolition of zamindari.
