📚 Indian Drainage System — Rivers of India /

🎯 Key Points /

1Indian rivers are grouped into Himalayan (perennial) and Peninsular (non-perennial) systems.

2Ganga (2,525 km) is the longest river flowing entirely within India.

3Godavari (1,464 km) is the longest Peninsular river — the “Dakshin Ganga”.

4The three main Himalayan systems are the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra.

5Himalayan rivers are fed by rain and glacial melt, so they flow year-round.

6Peninsular rivers depend on the monsoon, so many dry up in summer.

7Narmada & Tapi flow west through rift valleys into the Arabian Sea.

8West-flowing rivers form estuaries; most east-flowing rivers form deltas.

9The Cauvery (800 km) is Tamil Nadu’s lifeline, rising at Talakaveri, Karnataka.

10Four drainage patterns: Dendritic, Radial, Centripetal, Trellis.

11The Indus Waters Treaty (1960) split the Indus rivers between India & Pakistan.

12The Ganga-Brahmaputra delta (Sundarbans) is the world’s largest delta.

📖 Detailed Notes /

The drainage system of India is controlled by the broad relief of the subcontinent, and rivers are classified by origin into two major groups: Himalayan and Peninsular. The Himalayan rivers are perennial because they are fed by both monsoon rain and the melting of Himalayan snow and glaciers, giving a constant supply of water throughout the year. In their youthful mountainous stage they perform intense erosion — carving deep V-shaped valleys, gorges and waterfalls; on reaching the plains they slow down, meander widely and deposit silt, forming floodplains, oxbow lakes and braided channels.

The three great Himalayan systems are the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. The Indus rises near Lake Mansarovar in Tibet and is joined by five Punjab tributaries — Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. Under the Indus Waters Treaty (1960), India was allotted the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) and Pakistan the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab). The Ganga (2,525 km) rises from the Gangotri glacier in Uttarakhand as the Bhagirathi and becomes the Ganga at Devprayag after meeting the Alaknanda. Left-bank tributaries include the Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandak and Kosi; right-bank tributaries include the Yamuna (its longest tributary), Son and Damodar. The Brahmaputra rises in Tibet as the Tsangpo, enters India in Arunachal Pradesh as the Dihang, and causes severe floods in Assam.

The Peninsular rivers are older, flowing through shallow, well-graded valleys near their base level, so they show little erosion and hardly any meandering; being rain-fed they are non-perennial. Most — the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery — flow east across the Deccan into the Bay of Bengal, forming fertile deltas. The Godavari (1,464 km) is the largest, rising near Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra. The Cauvery rises at Talakaveri in Karnataka’s Brahmagiri hills and is the lifeline of Tamil Nadu. In contrast, the Narmada and Tapi flow west through rift valleys into the Arabian Sea, forming estuaries. These facts are heavily tested in TNPSC Group I, II and IV — especially river–state matching and west-flowing river identification.

Detailed Notes in Tamil
