🌧️ Indian Monsoon & Climate /
1Monsoon = seasonal winds that reverse direction with the season; from the Arabic mausim (season).
2The Southwest (summer) monsoon blows June–September and brings ~75% of India’s annual rainfall.
3It has two branches — the Arabian Sea branch and the Bay of Bengal branch.
4Monsoon onsets over Kerala around 1 June — the “burst of monsoon”.
5The Western Ghats cause heavy orographic rain on the windward side; the Deccan lies in a rain shadow.
6Mawsynram (Khasi Hills, Meghalaya) is the wettest place on Earth (~11,872 mm/yr).
7The Northeast (retreating) monsoon blows Oct–Dec and is mostly dry, except the SE coast.
8Tamil Nadu gets most of its rainfall (~48%) from the NE monsoon — a key TNPSC point.
9The ITCZ shifts north in summer, pulling the monsoon into the subcontinent.
10El Niño weakens the monsoon (drought risk); La Niña strengthens it.
11Drivers: Tibetan low, Mascarene High, Somali Jet, Tropical Easterly Jet and the IOD.
12IMD calls a monsoon “normal” at 96–104% of the Long Period Average (LPA).
The monsoon is the seasonal reversal of wind direction over the Indian subcontinent, and it dominates India’s climate and agriculture. During summer, the intense heating of the landmass — especially the Tibetan Plateau — creates a deep low-pressure zone, while the ocean stays relatively cool and high-pressure. Moist air therefore flows from sea to land as the Southwest (summer) monsoon from June to September, delivering roughly 75% of India’s annual rainfall. The northward migration of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the Mascarene High, the low-level Somali Jet and the upper-level Tropical Easterly Jet together power this flow.
The SW monsoon splits into two branches. The Arabian Sea branch strikes the Western Ghats, producing very heavy orographic rainfall on the windward (western) side, while the leeward Deccan plateau lies in a rain shadow. The Bay of Bengal branch curves around the bay, strikes the Khasi Hills — giving Mawsynram, the wettest place on Earth (~11,872 mm) — and moves up the Gangetic plain. The monsoon “bursts” over Kerala around 1 June and gradually covers the whole country by mid-July.
By October the low-pressure system weakens and the winds reverse, giving the Northeast (retreating) monsoon from October to December. Though dry over most of India, it is crucial for the southeast coast: Tamil Nadu receives about 48% of its annual rainfall from this NE monsoon, making it the single most important TN geography fact for TNPSC. Monsoon strength varies year to year with global drivers — El Niño tends to weaken it (drought years), while La Niña and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) strengthen it. The IMD classifies a monsoon as “normal” when seasonal rain is 96–104% of the Long Period Average. These points recur in TNPSC Group I, II and IV.
