🛡️ Defence & Security Current Affairs 2026 — Missiles, Exercises, Budget & Indigenisation
Why defence current affairs matters for TNPSC. Defence questions in TNPSC papers are rarely about weapon engineering. They are about names, numbers, places and schemes – which missile, which range, which state, how many crore. The 2026 cycle has been unusually rich, and almost every item below can be converted into a one-mark question.
1. The money: Union Budget 2026-27. The Ministry of Defence received an all-time high allocation of Rs 7.85 lakh crore, roughly 15% above the Budget Estimate for FY 2025-26 and close to 2% of the country’s GDP. Remember the structure of such an allocation: a capital outlay head that buys new platforms, a revenue head that pays salaries and keeps existing equipment running, and a separate defence pension head. For the exam, the headline figure and the percentage increase are what get asked.
2. The missiles. Two strategic launches define 2026. On 8 May 2026, DRDO flight-tested an Agni-5 fitted with MIRV technology from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast. Agni-5 has a range of over 5,000 km, placing it in the intercontinental class. MIRV – Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle – means a single missile carries several warheads that separate in flight and strike different targets, which multiplies deterrence without multiplying missiles. India’s first MIRV demonstration was Mission Divyastra in March 2024.
Then on 6 August 2026, the Strategic Forces Command and DRDO successfully test-fired Agni-4, a nuclear-capable medium-range ballistic missile, from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha. The ministry confirmed that all operational and technical parameters were validated. Note the division of labour that examiners like to test: DRDO designs and develops, the Strategic Forces Command – created under the Nuclear Command Authority – operates and launches.
Keep the family straight. Agni-1 through Agni-4 cover roughly 700 km to 3,500 km and are already deployed. Agni-5 crosses 5,000 km. Separately, Pralay is a short-range surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missile carrying a conventional payload of 500 to 1,000 kg – tactical, not strategic, and therefore not nuclear-tipped.
3. The factories: production, exports, private sector. This is the Atmanirbhar Bharat story in numbers. Defence production reached a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, against Rs 43,746 crore in 2013-14 – roughly a fourfold rise. Defence exports hit an all-time high of Rs 38,424 crore in the same year, a jump of more than 60% over the previous year, with Indian systems now reaching more than 80 countries. The declared export target is Rs 50,000 crore by 2029. The private sector accounted for about 24% of production – roughly Rs 42,000 crore, the highest private share recorded so far – and the stated ambition is to take that to 50%.
4. The policy toolkit. Four instruments drive indigenisation, and TNPSC has asked about them as a set. The Defence Acquisition Procedure lays down how the armed forces buy, with preference categories that favour Indian designs. The Positive Indigenisation Lists name items that may no longer be imported after a notified date, creating assured demand for domestic firms. The SRIJAN portal displays components that industry is invited to indigenise. iDEX – Innovations for Defence Excellence – funds startups and MSMEs to solve specific service problems.
5. The Tamil Nadu angle. India has two Defence Industrial Corridors, in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu corridor has five nodes – Chennai, Coimbatore, Hosur, Salem and Tiruchirappalli – chosen because each already has an engineering base: foundries and pumps at Coimbatore, electronics and auto components at Hosur, steel and castings at Salem, boilers and heavy fabrication at Tiruchirappalli, and shipbuilding and ordnance at Chennai. A PIB statement recorded potential investment of about Rs 11,794 crore from 53 industries and organisations, of which roughly Rs 3,861 crore had already been invested. Expect a question on either the number of nodes or the identity of one of them.
6. Exercises and inductions. Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026 was the 22nd edition of the India-US army exercise, with the US fielding its 11th Airborne Division and 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force. Memorise the standard pairings: Varuna (navy) and Garuda (air force) with France; Indra with Russia; Malabar with the United States, Japan and Australia; Surya Kiran with Nepal; Mitra Shakti with Sri Lanka; Ekuverin with the Maldives; Nomadic Elephant with Mongolia; Ajeya Warrior with the United Kingdom; Hand in Hand with China; Sampriti with Bangladesh. On the naval side, June 2026 brought five indigenous platforms – INS Dunagiri and INS Mahendragiri, both Project 17A stealth frigates, the survey vessel Sanshodhak, and the anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft Agray and Malvan built at Cochin Shipyard.
