Physiography of India — Himalayas, Northern Plains, Peninsular Plateau, Coasts & Islands
இன்தியாவின் நிலவியல் அமைப்பு
Formation and the broad framework. India’s relief is the outcome of three very different geological histories placed side by side. The Peninsular block is a fragment of the ancient Gondwana landmass – rigid, stable and among the oldest surfaces on earth. The Himalayas in the north are geologically young fold mountains raised out of the Tethys Sea when the northward-drifting Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate, a process still continuing and the reason the belt remains seismically active. Between the two lies the Northern Plain, a structural trough progressively filled by alluvium brought down by the Indus, the Ganga, the Brahmaputra and their tributaries. Physical geographers therefore recognise six divisions: the Northern and North-Eastern Mountains, the Northern Plain, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the Coastal Plains and the Islands.
The Himalayan mountains. The Himalayas stretch roughly 2,400 km in an arc from the Indus gorge in the west to the Brahmaputra gorge in the east, narrowing from about 400 km across in Kashmir to about 150 km in Arunachal Pradesh. Three longitudinal ranges run parallel. The Himadri or Greater Himalaya is the innermost and most continuous range, averaging about 6,000 m, composed largely of granite, and carrying the highest summits along with great glaciers such as Gangotri and Siachen. South of it the Himachal or Lesser Himalaya rises 3,700 to 4,500 m; the Pir Panjal is its longest range, and the Dhauladhar and Mahabharat ranges, together with the valleys of Kashmir, Kangra and Kullu, belong to this zone. The outermost Shiwalik, only 900 to 1,100 m high, is built of unconsolidated gravel and sediment washed down from the ranges above; the longitudinal valleys between the Shiwalik and the Himachal are the Duns. From west to east the belt is divided regionally into the Punjab, Kumaon, Nepal and Assam Himalaya, using the Satluj, Kali and Teesta as boundaries. The Karakoram lies to the north-west and contains K2, also called Godwin Austen, at 8,611 m, while Kangchenjunga at 8,586 m in Sikkim is the highest peak lying wholly inside India. Where the Brahmaputra turns south the ranges bend sharply into the Purvanchal or Eastern Hills.
The Northern Plain. Formed over the last few million years, the plain is about 2,400 km long and 240 to 320 km wide, and it is one of the most intensively farmed regions on earth. It is conventionally read as four parallel belts running north to south. The Bhabar is a narrow pebble-strewn belt along the Shiwalik foothills where streams sink underground; the Terai below it is a wet, marshy, once heavily forested strip where the water re-emerges. Further south the Bhangar is the older alluvium of terraces above the flood level, often containing calcareous nodules called kankar, while the Khadar is the newer alluvium of the active floodplain, renewed and enriched every year. Regionally the plain divides into the Punjab Plains with their doabs, the Ganga Plains, and the Brahmaputra Plain of Assam, where Majuli stands as the largest river island in the world.
Plateau, desert, coasts and islands. The Peninsular Plateau is a tableland of old crystalline and metamorphic rock. North of the Narmada lies the Central Highlands – the Malwa plateau, Bundelkhand, Baghelkhand and the mineral-rich Chotanagpur plateau drained by the Damodar. South of it the triangular Deccan Plateau is bounded by the Satpura, Maikal and Mahadeo ranges in the north; its north-western part is covered by the Deccan Trap, basalt from ancient lava flows that weathers into black regur soil. The Aravalli, the oldest fold mountain system in India, runs along the north-western edge with Guru Shikhar at 1,722 m as its highest point. The plateau’s western edge is the continuous Western Ghats or Sahyadri, about 1,600 km long, rising southward to Anaimudi at 2,695 m, the highest peak in South India; Doddabetta at 2,637 m is the highest in the Nilgiris, the block that links the Western and Eastern Ghats. The Palghat and Shencottah gaps break the Ghats and carry road and rail into Kerala. The Eastern Ghats are low and discontinuous, cut by the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri, with Arma Konda at 1,680 m the highest summit and the Javadi, Shevaroy, Kalrayan and Nallamala hills as its Tamil Nadu and Andhra segments. West of the Aravalli lies the Indian Desert or Marusthali, receiving under 150 mm of rain, with crescent-shaped barchan dunes and the Luni as its only significant river. The Western Coastal Plain is narrow and divided into Kachchh-Kathiawar, Konkan, Kanara and Malabar, the last marked by backwater kayals such as Vembanad; the Eastern Coastal Plain is broader and deltaic, comprising the Northern Circar and the Coromandel Coast, with Chilika as India’s largest brackish lagoon and Pulicat straddling the Tamil Nadu and Andhra border. Finally, the Lakshadweep group of 36 coral islands lies in the Arabian Sea with Kavaratti as its capital, and the 572 islands of the Andaman and Nicobar group in the Bay of Bengal are of volcanic and tectonic origin – Saddle Peak at 732 m is the highest point, Barren Island is India’s only active volcano, the Ten Degree Channel separates the Andaman from the Nicobar group, and Indira Point on Great Nicobar is the southernmost tip of India.
