A total of 821 vacancies have been announced — 41 posts under Group II Services and 780 posts under Group IIA Services. Online applications are open until 09.09.2026, 11.59 P.M., and the common preliminary examination will be held on 01.11.2026 from 9.30 A.M. to 12.30 P.M.

Educational qualification
கல்வித் தகுதி
The basic requirement for most posts is a degree from any University recognised by the University Grants Commission. The qualification must be held on the date of notification, 11.08.2026, and must have been obtained in the order SSLC + HSC / Diploma or equivalent + Under Graduate Degree + Post Graduate Degree.
பெரும்பாலான பணியிடங்களுக்கான அடிப்படைத் தகுதி, பல்கலைக்கழக மானியக் குழுவால் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்ட எந்தவொரு பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் பட்டம் ஆகும். இத்தகுதியை அறிவிக்கை வெளியான நாளான 11.08.2026 அன்று பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும். மேலும், SSLC + மேல்நிலை/பட்டயம் அல்லது அதற்கு இணையானது + இளங்கலைப் பட்டம் + முதுகலைப் பட்டம் என்ற வரிசையில் படித்திருக்க வேண்டும்.

"No maximum age limit" means the candidate should not have completed 60 years of age as on 01.07.2026 or at the time of selection / appointment. Jailor posts carry a higher ceiling of 37 years for candidates holding a Master’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice Administration or in Social Work; Deputy Commercial Tax Officer carries 34 years for candidates holding a degree in Law. Persons with benchmark disability are not eligible for the Jailor posts, Special Assistant and Special Branch Assistant. Check the post-wise age tables in the notification.

Candidates belonging to special categories can claim exemption from the examination fee. Every application claiming fee concession uses up one free chance, so keep your own count — the choice of "Yes" or "No" cannot be edited after the application is submitted, and a false claim leads to rejection and a one-year debarment.

The examination has two successive stages — a common preliminary examination for both services, followed by separate main examinations for Group II and Group IIA. There is no oral test or interview in this notification.

- Duration 3 hours, OMR mode, objective type. Questions on General Studies are set in both Tamil and English.

தகுதி மதிப்பெண் 300க்கு 90; அனைத்துச் சமூகத்தினருக்கும் ஒரே அளவு. - The preliminary examination is a screening test only — these marks are not counted in the final order of merit.
முதல்நிலைத் தேர்வு ஒரு வடிகட்டல் தேர்வு மட்டுமே; அதன் மதிப்பெண்கள் இறுதித் தரவரிசைக்குக் கணக்கில் கொள்ளப்படாது. - Candidates are admitted to the main examination at 10 times the number of vacancies, subject to the rule of reservation.

The notification prescribes deduction of marks for OMR filling errors — two marks for writing the wrong register number on a non-personalised sheet, and 0.5 mark for other specified errors.

This is the key difference between the two services this year: Group II Paper II is a descriptive General Studies paper, while Group IIA Paper II is an objective Computer Based Test of 200 questions.
How the rank list is decided / தரவரிசை எவ்வாறு தீர்மானிக்கப்படுகிறது
- Paper I is qualifying in nature. Marks obtained in Paper II alone determine the final ranking, for both Group II and Group IIA.
தாள் I தகுதிக்கானது மட்டுமே. குரூப் II மற்றும் குரூப் IIA இரண்டிற்கும், தாள் II-இல் பெறும் மதிப்பெண்கள் மட்டுமே இறுதித் தரவரிசையைத் தீர்மானிக்கும். - Paper II answer sheets are evaluated only if the candidate secures the minimum qualifying marks in Paper I.

- Language is 100 of the 200 questions. Half the paper is General Tamil, and within it இலக்கணம் alone carries 25 questions — the single largest unit in the entire preliminary examination. Give it the study time that weightage deserves.

What is the difference between TNPSC Group 2 and Group 2A?
Both write the same preliminary examination. The main examination differs: for Group II Services, Paper II is a descriptive General Studies paper of 300 marks; for Group IIA Services, Paper II is an objective Computer Based Test of 200 questions for 300 marks — 150 General Studies and 50 General Intelligence and Reasoning. In both cases Paper I is the Tamil Eligibility Test and only Paper II marks count for ranking.
