1.Reservation Policy in Tamil Nadu
Why in News?
The Supreme Court on February 8 decided to hear a petition which challenges the constitutionality of a Tamil Nadu State law giving 69% reservation in education and employment. The court is hearing a petition filed by Tamil Nadu resident, Dinesh B., challenging the Tamil Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions and of appointments or posts in the Services under the State) Act of 1993.
Key Points
1.The 1993 Act is protected under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution from judicial review.
2.Section 4 of the Act provides 30% reservation to the Backward Classes, 20% for Most Backward Classes and Denotified Communities, 18% for Scheduled Castes, and 1% for Scheduled Tribes.
3.Tamil Nadu is a pioneer in the implementation of reservations in public employment and education.
4.The policy of reservation has been in practice since 1921 in this State.
5.The statute was enacted on July 19, 1994 with the President’s assent.

3.The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, will inaugurate the World Sustainable Development Summit 2021 on the 10th of February through video conferencing. The World sustainable development summit will be organized under the theme- ‘Redefining Our Common Future: Safe and Secure Environment for All’. The year will mark the 20th edition of the summit. It will be held between 10th to 12th February 2021. This summit is organized by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
